Default PS3 outsells the Wii for the first time in Japan

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071130/...CPE1UUdpGSxLEF

I like the Wii, but the Wii selling well does not directly help the Blu cause... unless you count the chance that people might buy the Wii instead of the 360. anyways, the news is just getting better and better for blu... in Japan anyways. hopefully, we'll see these numbers here in the US soon.

I had a Wii but traded it in because I just wasn't using it.

The Wii will start to wear out its novelty pretty soon. Although I think its great console and has pretty good games, it won't last into the next few years because people need their fix of great HD graphics and sound which the Wii's weak processors cannot provide.

I don't really think the Wii is a threat to the PS3. They are quite different, and historically the game market has easily supported more than one platform.

That is impressive though. I hear that over here you can hardly get your hands on a Wii.

According to me, who is a student of economics, the graph of wii sales is going to shoot up till holiday 2008, but then the consumers will get bored of mario, and all other childish games nintendo comes out with. Like how can adult be entertained by zelda and other kiddy games. I know more than 5 people who sold their wii just because you cannot play nintendo games forever and you cannot play other genres like racing, fps etc. using the controller and nunchuk.

I have a Wii, and a PS3, I love my Wii. If you want to play arcade style games, there is a Wii remote add-on that lets you play with a controller style remote. It is actually pretty inexpensive so most people should be able to buy it.
Yes the Wii is selling out in USA so much that it is very very very hard to find.
It IS the console of the holiday shopping season. Sorry guys. Neither the PS3 or the 360 have sold nearly as well in USA.
But I still think the PS3 is a better system. Its just that right now we have people who are waiting for the format war to end, people who think you need HDTV to play the PS3, people who do not want to spend that much money, etc.. This hurts our sales, but luckily the biggest problem of price is being solved by lowering it so much. Sure people want it lower, but that is always true. For what it does, it is the best-priced console out there. But what it does is more than most people want or need, or think they need... yet.

Sony designed PS3 to be around for years to come. Remember that PS2 was still selling well in Japan before PS3 was released. It takes time to build up the sales numbers. Wii was on top because it was cheap at $250. PS3 will still be the next-gen console to have when Nintendo is designing their next console. In short, Sony had their eye on the long-term goal.

I am pretty sure that the novelty of the Wii and its main attraction is that its an entirely new demographic that has opened, sans typical "gamer". Your demand assumption better account for an increased market of 50% of the female population between 12-35 and then the baby boomer generation. If the Wii had an adult version of brain academy with Suduko and cross-word puzzles that also utilized fitness, geriatrics would be doing cartwheels. The attachment rate will suck, but the Wii console is going to continue to sell for quite some time. Even the "gamer" will just adopt two systems.

Instead of 200 milion 6th generation consoles being sold, there are probably going to be 300 million 7th generation consoles that will sell. In the end, this console war is only going to increase money for each of the three companies. More than ever developing markets are opening up.

The only loser in this console war are the traditional entertainment industries (movie, television, and music). People are switching to games.

My kids love the Wii and probably play it more than any other system - and have since we got it. It is a great console for the right age bracket, and I think that will continue. That along with the expensive price is what is moving all the units.

Someone who is 25 might get tired of it, but that is not the intended audience. I have no doubt that the Wii will continue to sell very well.

And chances are that the only reason the PS3 beat it in Japan is because more people couldn't find the Wii over there, either.

But as someone else said, I don't see the Wii as being in direct competition. When people (kids) are ready for high-def gaming (and movie watching), they'll have to upgrade to the PS3 or that other, uh, console thing. And with so many PS2s out there, the natural progression when people are ready to go high-def, will be to trade up from the PS2 to the PS3.

That really is a great point. Considering there are 100 million PS2 users, why in the hell would they settle for a system that is graphically inferior, the Wii, to their current one.

Two totally different systems for two different types of consumers. The only thing they have in common is that they both are gaming systems, but even that is not a equal comparison as they are so different in this area. The PS3 is so much more at every level.

We have a Wii, a PS3, 2 PS2's and an XBox 360. Th 360 is my 8 year old's system in his room and he plays that almost daily. The PS3 is in the living room and I must say that I play almost daily. The Wii is also in the living room and is played very little. Got it right after Christmas last year and it's been months since it's been touched.
I think, for me, the reason I don't play it very much is that commercials you see and what you hear from friends is that it's a system that you play with more than one person (not that you have to but that's the impression given) and I work nights so I don't see the rest of the family all that much to want to play it. But I sure do sit and have plenty of of 'me' time with my PS3.

Isn't the Wii more for little kids who want to jump around & swing their arms before taking their Ritalin? It just looks more kid oriented to me. Maybe I'm wrong... I have been once or twice!

The Wii fad is over in Japan. When a fad dies there it dies hard. Now you'll see spikes for popular franchise games, but that's it

The Wii and PS3 are completely different animals as far as demographics. The lure of Wii is directly at groups of people such as families who like to game together. That group tends to spend a tremendous amount of money once they see titles that are for all ages. I often go to single friends places and a Wii sits unused while the PS3 or XBox is flipped on. I go to a freinds family's house and it's all about the Wii.

It's also why Guitar Hero and Rock Band are fabulous sellers. Who would have thought two years ago that you could sell a $50 game that needed $160 in controlers would be even in the top ten for games sales? Once you get the parental unit and kids agreeing that it's quality entertainment, then the wallet just busts wide open.

All of these new gamers can only have a positive impact on all console sales. The PS3 is positioned to take advantage in the future when all of the kids start to look for something better for a slightly older audience.

Probably because EVERYONE probably has gotten a Wii by now. LOL! Those things sold ridiculously well. They are fun little machines though for the average consumer.

I too have both the Wii and the PS3. The Wii is for the bedroom, wife likes to play it and I do too occassionally. The PS3, on the other hand, will be for the living room, the master of the entertainment domain. The one to convert the rest to Blu-ray mastering

Not sure how the Wii is being sold, but I've never seen it in stores. I just gave up after a while. Most places want like $400/$500 for a bundle.
