Betting good money that they won't ban them rather luxury (green) tax the 40+ units. Punish the people for their greed and consumption. Be assured that the legislature will make sure they exempt themselves.

This doesn't sound so bad, in fact the outcry sounds more like the usual out cry from big corporations that will lose money as consumers save, and the j6p who just likes to get outraged any time the big bad government tries to regulate anything. I am sure many tv's could be easily converted to conform without sky rocketing cost, and saving money on your bills, so why this is a problem is beyond me.

maybe i am understanding this wrong, it is not banning tvs, but instead regulating the power suckers. Which will, lets be honest, never be reduced without being forced too, and this benefits the consumer. Also fridges and dryers and such have regulations.... so why not tvs

Anyone got power consumption numbers on 65" CRT? I'd like to compare them to the Panny plasma.

Let's not forget that old bulky CRT sets used a lot more energy than LCD's or plasmas, Cali did'nt ban them!

Cali could quit just stop the people on welfare from getting the big screens or not give them free cable for "educational" purposes, then they would have nothing to watch on that big ol' thing. haha glad I dont live in cali so I can enjoy my plasmas w/o any additional taxes.

In Cali you have to buy a recycling fee when buying any new tv that goes above a certain price if I remember right plus 8.75% sales tax(or if you live in Los Angeles it's 9.25% sales tax)

wow this thread kind of makes me hope the end of humanity comes soon lol, a whopping fee not to exceed $30 on a thousand dollar set how dare they, a regulation to lower your electric bill and force manufacturers to release a better set fully with in their means, how dare they, i am moving, kicking and screaming. anyone got a legitimate reason to not like this, or you all just don't believe anything we do can have an adverse affect on the environment, and therefore you want to "show them hippies" and screw taking responsibility for trash and bi-products of our society?

Yeah, because we all know televisions use so much power compared to leaving computers, lights, printers, etc. on 24/7 in many businesses. Undeniable logic right there.

Just start using solar panels. Though i don't get why more people don't use solar power...they spend all kinds on a big house but don't use the sun to reduce costs.

If this is true http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...ing-state-debt it'll take more than switching off a few plasma TVs to save California

Because of a TV size that can't be monitored anyways? Who is going to stop cross border shopping, would tiny projectors fall into that category since they can be basically any size?

That's what I was thinking too. So California retailers wont be able to sell them but you can still buy them in Oregon or Arizona or online. Will the governator create a special police that will go from house to house to check your TV size too

good luck with all that...cali sucks...just one more reason (in a very long list) it would be better for the state to just fall off into the pacific and disappear. but it can't be too surprising...more government control, telling us what we need...

long live the republic of texas!

Clearly prohibition taught the latest batch of Big Brothers nothing. Imagine the sales tax revenue they'd lose if all those TVs went black market. It would be a nice industry until the US adopts something like Sweden has where you have to use a national ID when making purchases so the overseers can track what you buy, limit what you buy, annually retax what you currently own, and prevent you from reselling.
