I hate to agree with the AVS schmucks but I too am not impressed. I cancelled my order with Amazon for the time being. However, the Season 1 set is an absolute marvel... perfect in almost every way except for the low audio volumes. Thank you Paramount for the sensible packaging choice as well.

I think I understand conceptually what you are saying in regard to DNR and "plastisizing," but I'm afraid I don't see it in the screencap you are using as an example. All I see are black matte lines which are an artifact from the old optical compositing process in which foreground and background elements and their mattes were often slightly out of registration. Scott Farrar, VFX Cameraman on ST: III gives a good explanation of this process on the 2nd disc of the 2-disc DVD SE of that movie. Check it out if you are interested -- I believe the featurette is titled "Star Trek Universe #1."

You can see this same artifact in the screencap from the first movie (the spiked peaks on the right in front of the moon):

Is this what you mean when you say "background landscape profile?" If so, these are mistakes that were created in 1979 and 1991, respectively.

I got the set earlier this week, and I'm very happy with it.

Not too keen on the packaging, but the films themselves look great to me.

Having said that, I thought The Untouchables looked great and couldn't really see what all the fuss was about.

Very sharp picture, there are a few spots of dirt in places on some shots, but generally very good.

I've only looked at a few select scenes so far though, aside from the Star Trek Summit which I watched last night and thought was quite entertaining.

Odd how this set is being compared to Patton, which I have mostly saw good reviews for.

I'm a little dissappointed about this. Hopefully, the video does look decent, but it definitely isn't looking good for this. Kinda makes the fact that these are Director's cuts seem less significant.

Seriously? How can anyone think the picture is "very sharp"? The shots look so muddy and riddled with DNR that you don't need to be a DNR snob to see it. It looks like a low bitrate broadcast on ABC "HD".

If that's the case, I'll take it. I thought Patton looked great but then again, my screen size is only 52".

Also, from the DVD vs the blu-ray screenshot link provided earlier (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=263), it looks like a pretty good improvement over the DVD to me.

Which is why Paramount Gains Access to BD+ Tools, which will undoubtedly be deployed for the new film's release come late 2009.

Look theres no need to overreact here let us wait until we see the review from BR.com before we go all nuts on Paramount for a bad transfer. The avs forums cannot be relied on really for proper reviews and screencaps based on there continued bias towards Blu Ray, I think the freaks there are still in HDDVD denial or something maybe waiting for Toshibas Digital Downloads or something. Wait for a BR.com review then make a educated decision based off that. With that being said BR.com reviewers PLEASE get the reviews out early so we can cancel our orders if it is indeed bad lol

I have to say as a collector, I will be getting these as they are the original releases, not director or special editions. It was the same thing with star wars, when so many fans wanted the original releases and not the special editions on DVD. We are going to see flaws, crappy special effects etc... Look at Star Wars episode 4, the original release, you could see the pole that held up the Falcon when it entered the Death Star, and you could see the boxes around the Tie Fighters when they flew across the screen. They are old movies with outdated special effects (state of the art at the time with ILM), so I'm ok for now with scenes like above with the Golden Gate bridge or seeing the Regula Moon bleed through the Reliant as it passes over it. Thats the way it came out. And no doubt we will see improved special & directors editions after STXI, I'm ok with that just like I have the original and special editions of Star Wars. I think its cool to have the original versions of TMP and UDC on Blu now because I'm sure you wont see them in their original form again. As for DNR, I'm not seeing any less grain on the shots between the blu and DVD, just sharper clearer images, Star Trek was always ment to be clean and crisp future vision, not gritty grain like BSG, I can live with it!! Being a sci-fi fan, I'm ok with a double dip on something that will be different on two versions. As with star wars when it finally gets released on Blu, I'll pay a little more to have both versions of each movie for the original trilogy. Its just part of movie history. TOS - original version on Blu - horrible special effects - remastered effects, beautiful... You'll get the same wow effect when the Directors and special editions come out with the updated effects. Now if ILM can redo the effects in STV it could be a good movie, but that's just a dream! lol Sorry for the babble, just pointing out my justification on getting these.

It was the only version ever released to home video until the Director's Edition 2 Disc, where Nicholas Meyer added some different close ups McCoy during the Spock/Valeris mind-meld in addition to the previous extra footage. The aspect ratio was different from the theatrical version as well, 2.11:1 or something like that. The BD will be the first time the original theatrical version of VI has ever been released to home video.

i remember seeing the theatrical version of star trek 6 on dvd. that's the only version i've ever seen or watched.

Nice to see people here are so dismissive of other's opinion.

You're actually commenting on something where all you've seen is a screencap online, whereas I actually have the discs in my possession and have looked at several scenes through all six movies.

I agree with you I bet the screen caps came from the bootleg versions out now which are 720P down converts as for me do I love the movies? yes do they look better than the dvd's ? yes so buying them is a no brainer will they be as good as they could be probably not I feel they were rushed to coincide with the new movie release and will get a deluxe release with the DC and more extra's down the road so if your really picky hold off till later I'm doing that with Lord of The Rings but for Star Trek I'm doing a Blu-Ray marathon on May 12th:-)

Blu-man08 is correct, you've never seen the Theatrical version of ST:6 on DVD because it and ST:TMP have NEVER been released that way in the digital formats. Actually ST:6 Theatrical version has never been release before, neither on DVD or VHS. So the only version you could have watched on DVD is the Special Collectors Edition 2 disc set or the Special Edition single disc (which it doesn't state on the cover).

Star Trek: The Motion Picture presents the original 1979 version of the film for the first time in a digital format.

Finally Star Trek VI also comes in it's theatrical version for the first time on home video with the original audio commentary by Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flinn
From: DVD Review website

This version was still the special edition, just not a 2 disc set.

2 disc collectors special edition

These are the only 2 dvd's released.

A big discussion going on at HomeTheaterForum about Star Trek I-VI.

At his point, it's all pretty confusing. I'll wait for some of the reviews before arriving at a judgement.

I was not aware that you had seen the actual discs. If the screencaps online are not representative of the actual product then I take my comments back. That said, based solely on the screencaps, it looks bad.

Screenshots are poor looking. I was not going to get the set but hoped for Star Trek VI when individually released. Prior to that i'll Netflix it. If quality is not up to par i'll pass on it.
