It seems the regular edition and Steelbook are available day one in store, I checked online and there seems to be plenty of stock. Good to see that. As far as yesterday I didn't see in-store stock at Target but I'll check again today.

That was an error. They corrected it later resulting in me having a completely new 4K set at no cost and the original.

Picked up a steelbook at Best Buy. They had two copies of the regular release as well for 22.99. They had, but sold, one copy of the slipcase version of CE3K as well. Two steelbooks and two gift sets were all that was left. Passed as I don't want to pay 25 for that steelbook. Will pick it up at Walmart instead.

Watching this now. Seemed a little warm so I switched from Warm 1 to standard and now it looks much better. The pictures a little hazy, but I frankly don't see it ever looking better. God damn do I love this movie though. I used to watch it all the time as a kid. Had all these that I'd play with too, and then I got really into the roughnecks animated series that I also loved!

Ooh, that creature design on the toy packaging is pretty awesome. I haven't seen this movie but my copy just arrived today and I'm planning on watching it before the week is up. Lot's of movies to catch up on and I'm so glad UHD catalogue releases are exploding; get to see the best versions possible of classics.

I don't have a 4K set up. Given that THE PROFESSIONAL, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, BRAM STOKER's DRACULA and CROUCHING TIGER all had "mastered from 4K" editions it seemed a given that the blu included would also be remastered. Sources at Sony erroneously stated that the blu was a remaster and not a ten year old disc. Roll your eyes all you want, I'm not paying $21 for a disc I can get for $7. |

I just watched the first 45 minutes of this. I love it. Looks great overall. There are many scenes with heavy grain - some of the earlier ones had black-ish grain (which looks like noise) but for the most part it has a great vibrant film look to it.
Thanks Sony. You can't put these out fast enough for me. |

Sounds like JohhnyF was only in it for the blu-ray. Because SONY hasn't listed a separate blu-ray release timed to the 20th Anniversary, the UHD pack was the only shot for a 1080p upgrade. I was going to snap up the 4k for the same reason. Alas, looks like the UK's still the best in blu. I know the cam shots in this thread are not representative in a pure sense, but if they offer any indication, not sure I like the new color timing anyway. .. |

OMG that was so good. I really like this movie and it looks amazing on my end. Some of the posts in this thread had me shook, but Sony came through for me once again.
Skin tones are great (whew). There's no sunburnt orange bake to anybody, these are just a lot of people with healthy skin, good circulation, good tans and a little bit of natural make up. Especially leading man Rico, he's basically a Ken doll, so at times you might think he looks unreal, but he's definitely real. The one shot of him getting a laser tattoo might look a little contrasty and baked, but I think that's just a consequence of him being in the background with superimposed FX on a front layer... rather than the usual live action in front/green screen in the back. Gotta be an original production thing. Grain? Yeah, it's there. It's immaculate to me, but I guess you're going to hate it if you're allergic to it. The only aggressive, possibly erroneous grain I saw was a total of a few seconds... those seconds consisted of the opening Tristar logo and the moment when the camera cuts to "#4" for a few seconds when they're about to get [Show spoiler] on Denise Richard's watch. I've seen real noise watching Walking Dead season 7 on Netflix last week, and this grain isn't even 1/100th of that. The resolution makes it look larger than life, super full pixel density, like Leon and Fifth Element. This is what I was hoping for. The HDR and WCG is 100% natural, and you just see nice color, skin tones, light cast on everybody when applicable and nothing artificial, garish or overblown. The blue light flares and fire effects are perfect. They're not flashing out of your screen like newer movies do, but they're as vibrant and vivid as can be without artificial, revisionist augmentation. Barring all-CG fire in stuff like Great Wall and Skull Island, this might be the best real film fire hue I've seen on the format. It's like that one explosion from the Leon UHD, except it happens more often. The carpet bombing shot will surely impress. None of the shadow is overly darkened to make anything look more modern or heavily atmospheric in a way that it never was. The image may not have the depth and contour that some other releases have, but it is a generally daytime/daylight movie. CG has aged great. UHD color really helps with that too, I'm sure, but seriously this CG somehow looks like really limber practical effects most of the time. So when it's mingling with actual practical FX and live actors, it doesn't miss a beat. That's seriously impressive for '97, even if it's just bugs. Sure beats Mummy '99 imo. I'm on a KS8000 with my same old K8500 player, for reference. imo buy with confidence if you appreciate and enjoy this era of films, or just dig Starship Troopers and you're confident in your display capabilities. I think this was the 4th time I've seen it? Excellent movie. Master level mix of satire and playing it straight. Last edited by LoSouL; 09-20-2017 at 12:20 AM. |

We might have some other settings different, or different out-of-the-box color calibration. Believe me, I can't stand orange/red skin tones like I was getting on Cabin In the Woods, so if it was there for me, I'd definitely be railing on it. Especially since I went in expecting a problem. |
