Foolin' Around rights are with the same people who also own Night of the Juggler, so the chance of a release is not very good. Drive-In is with Sony and we haven't done a deal with Sony and I can't promise you that if we did, we would pick up Drive-In. |

Coming May 26th!
OLD BOYFRIENDS (1979) • Brand New 4K Master • NEW Audio Commentary by Director Joan Tewkesbury with Filmmaker Douglas Hosdale • NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian/Critic Peter Tonguette • Optional English Subtitles • Dual-Layered BD50 Disc • Trailers Color 103 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated R Screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury (Thieves Like Us, Nashville) made her directorial debut with this gripping and well-acted drama intelligently written by Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver) and Leonard Schrader (Blue Collar). Diane Cruise (Talia Shire, Rocky, in a riveting performance) is a woman whose life has shattered into a myriad of pieces after the dissolution of her marriage. She decides to delve into her past and seek out the men who marked the milestones of her life: Eric (John Belushi, The Blues Brothers), the high school sweetheart who ruined her reputation with lies, Jeff (Richard Jordan, Logan’s Run), the college lover she almost married and Wayne (Keith Carradine, The Long Riders), the unstable brother of her first real love. The stellar cast also includes John Houseman (My Bodyguard), Buck Henry (Candy), Gerrit Graham (Class Reunion) and P.J. Soles (Stripes). Two of the film’s finest features are the terrific cinematography by William A. Fraker (Rosemary’s Baby) and original musical score by David Shire (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three). 738329246846.jpg Last edited by Kino Lorber Insider; 03-10-2020 at 06:14 PM. |

Both of those Old Boyfriends commentary tracks are new but only one is advertised as new.
And on the subject of John Belushi: do you have any John Belushi titles from Universal? |

So the Devil and the deep is out too then. There is only one Gary Cooper title left and that would be Desire. Everything else all and I do mean all Gary Cooper titles are ruled out except for Desire. Since everyone on here would agree that "Some" Gary Cooper titles does not equal the bit part he had in one film Alice in Wonderland then you might as well announce it. It is official Desire will be released by Kino in this second Universal deal.

Weird request that is probably not only a "no" but a "hell no." Still, I'll ask anyway...
Any chance of Kino acquiring Doin' Time on Planet Earth with Adam West and others? It never even got a DVD release, to my knowledge. I have no idea who would even have the rights. |

If KL were to consider the BG movies, they should get the 1979 BG movie as well. Make it a triple feature to beef up sales with a 4k remaster of the 1979 BG theatrical outing. |

A question for the Insider:
A while ago, you or your predecessor mentioned that releases of SONG OF NORWAY and THE LAST VALLEY were unlikely because of problematic elements. Now that releases of both films are scheduled in the next few months, I am curious about what caused this happy turn of events. Were usable 35mm elements discovered somewhere? Did Disney do some restoration/clean up work on these elements, or did Kino? Or did that earlier comment on problematic elements refer to the 65mm original materials, which I assume are still unusable and sadly seems to be the case for most large format films of the 60s and 70s. [Show spoiler] Which is great news, because it's fantastic. To be honest I'm amazed Scream didn't get there first given the director and quality of the film, but I'm just grateful someone is finally releasing it. |

I had a chance to check out the excellent Kino BD of the truly bizarre 1984 curio "Dog Day", starring Lee Marvin. Marvin plays a fugitive on the run from the law in rural France, with a couple million in cash in tow, who ends up hiding in the farmhouse of a family that can charitably be called insane. The patriarch (Victor Lanoux) and his more dim-witted brother (Jean Carmet) are sociopathic sex maniacs. The sister, played by an always excellent Bernadette Lafont, is a nymphomaniac to the degree that her sex drive makes Lisa Ann look like a prude. Oh, and the son is played appropriately by David Bennent, the kid from "The Tin Drum". Terrific French actress Miou-Miou plays Lanoux's much younger wife, who falls in love with Marvin for some mysterious reason.
Obviously, Miou-Miou's character is so traumatized by her insane husband and looking for a way out that any new man would seem like a solid alternative. But I say it is mysterious that she would fall in love with Marvin because, in this film, he looks like he was knocking back at least a bottle (we're talking BIG bottles) a day of the hard stuff. Marvin is one of my favorite actors, but never did he look worse than he does here. He isn't really asked to do a ton in the film, except hide out, run a bit, and look exasperated. Marvin, throughout, has an expression on his face that one would have if, say, you were having dinner at a five-star restaurant and, suddenly, a donkey show started happening in the middle of the restaurant. Marvin consistently acts worn-down and incredulous, sometimes by character affect and other times by pure optics, but it ends up working quite well for the film overall. Marvin, in later scenes, digs deep and delivers some terrific acting. This movie is certainly not for everyone. Everything that is wildly offensive by 2020 standards, or just decent human being standards, is on parade here. We're talking rape, racism, incest, overall just some truly disgusting human beings. But it's done in such a cartoonish way that it becomes extremely funny if you have a sick sense of humor. But that's a big if. The film is certainly not meant to be taken seriously IMO, as it's pitched at a level that suggests a fever dream. Obviously, the majority of the cast speaks in French, but I did watch the film in English in my first viewing, then went back and watched some scenes in French with English subs. The English dub is outrageously hilarious and far more over-the-top than the French subs. I quite enjoyed this film, but if you go in expecting a straightforward Lee Marvin crime film, it will be a curveball. It's more of a wildly crude black comedy, with a distinctly surreal ambience, that happens to star Lee Marvin. The opening scenes and premise suggest an homage to the great Marvin film "Prime Cut", a bizarre piece of work in its own right. But "Dog Day" is a different animal in that there's nothing really grounded in reality. It's a film that is sure to polarize, but I recommend it to those who enjoy strange cinema.
