I think I fixed it. I’ll have to experiment more this weekend but it seems the trick was to put it in 24p mode and turn off the linked to tv setting on the player and tv. If I just did one or the other there would be an audio delay but this seems to have fixed that and is better than the auto 24fps mode. Actually works out better this way as I like turning off the tv to listen to music too and that linked to tv setting was annoying me.

I want to report SW Last Jedi no longer Skips/Freezes in the following segments: 1hr 2min and 1hr 23min with the latest fw M36.R.0239. In previous firmware, these segments would skip all the time.

I haven’t encountered any interruptions with several discs since updating to the latest fw. It’s safe to say the past problems of this player are all software related and not a fault of the disc or optical drive.

Is the Sony X800 worth the extra money than the X700 even through I don’t have a Dolby Vision HDR tv?

Christmas is just around the corner, get the X800. It should be on sale for $150.

That is last years sale price to clear out inventory. Since the UBP-X800 is out of production the current retail price is $299.99 and some places have it on sale for $248. If inventory is low there well most likely not be a price drop to $149.99 like there was last year.

Someone in my family yesterday bought the UBP-X800 and is having an issue where sometimes after turning on the player, the player sets the resolution to 480i, resulting in a blurry interface. Setting the resolution to 4k or Automatic and the colorspace to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 has no effect on this issue. This person has a Sony 4k HDR 55" TV. The HDMI input that the player is connected to on the TV is set to Enhanced (for HDR). The player was updated to the latest software yesterday through Wi-Fi. Is anyone else here having the same issue with this player? Is it an HDMI handshake issue?

It’s not a HDMI handshake issue. Most HDMI handshake issues are when there is only a static picture in screen that has no source. The X800 is well known to be a very buggy and unstable first generation 4K UHD Blu-ray, even with the latest firmware it helped little to improve the stability of it, but many x800 owners still complain on the issues and Sony can’t replicate the issues. Stores are having a hard time selling them due to many returns on them. I recommend that the X800 needs to be returned.

Less than two weeks for Boxing Day.

Amazing, we're almost in 2019, something has to happen soon, something good. What? ...Sony X900 with flesh tone mapping?

Not based the User reviews at the Best Buy website and there are over 4000 reviews. Most of those people that bought this player seem to have a good experience with this player. Also if she wants a 4k Blu-ray player but I don't think she will be buying any 4k discs if I think about it but she still wants to a 4k Blu-ray player and wants me to buy her a movie on 4k Blu-ray for Christmas. She has a few Blu-rays and DVDs that she got as birthday and Christmas gifts however. So what's left as a 4k Blu-ray Player? She wants a 4k Blu-ray because she want to make the best use out of her 4k HDR TV. Should I talk her out of getting a 4k Blu-ray player or even a normal Blu-ray player for that matter and just stick with streaming? Can anyone else reply to me besides Vor4 if they ever experienced this issue with the UBP-X800?

Most audio/video enthusiasts here take those reviews from Best Buy and Amazon as a grain of salt. Most of those people who wrote reviews probably had the player for a few days then returned it. Here on this thread there many x800 owners and former x800 owners that had nothing but issues on this player. Also its well documented that this player has issues, as well on the Sony X series (700, 800, 1000ES). Go to YouTube.com and search for Sony X800 issues, X700 issues, and X1000ES issues and go to Sony's community forums. Also I have family members that tried out three x800's near the end of the year 2017, and all of them had issues such as freezing up, won't power on, and sometimes it did not display a picture. Now they are happy with 4k streaming.

There are no manufactures making blu-ray players anymore. There are rumors that are floating around that Samsung, LG, and Panasonic, perhaps Sony will all stop making 4k UHD players next year and will start making 4k streaming devices. Look what happened to OPPO. They were one the most well respected and innovated companies that produced excellent physical media players and now they left due to the rapidly declining physical media market.

How likely will she watch a movie on physical disc? Does she buy blu-ray movies? Do you ever see her stream from her tv? It seems to me that she does not need to get a 4k UHD blu-ray player, since she barely uses physical media according what you wrote. She can get the best use for her tv is streaming. Most sources (physical and digital) are only in 1080p. Also there are more 4k streaming sources than 4k physical media souces.

I own the UBP-X800, and I have never had any problems whatsoever, at any time, and others here state the same thing, no problems. You must work for a streaming service. Where do you claim to have heard that these companies are going to discontinue manufacturing blu-ray players, that is one of the most stupid claims that I have ever seen here.

For around a year I know of two family members that own two separate Sony UBP-X800's and so far they have not had any problems playing any optical discs including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. They also have the Netflix Blu-ray unlimited rental program and watch several Blu-ray discs a week (Many more Blu-ray discs compared to what I have time to watch).

The Sony UBP-X800 is a awesome player for the price and I hope Sony releases a third generation Blu-ray player in 2019 called the UBP-X900 with Dolby Vision HDR (but that is only a theory). The Sony UBP-X700 was their second generation player that dropped DVD-AUDIO playback but added Dolby Vision HDR. Personally I prefer the OPPO UDP-203 over the Sony. But both of those models are now out of production. My family members also have the 2016 OPPO UDP-203. Its ideal to have a Blu-ray player connected to all TV's and home theater systems in ones home.

I have two X800 units and they both work fine, never have frozen up and are just quality electronics. Some people have had issues due to HDMI cables, settings not correct with certain tv's or projectors etc. but usually those are worked out with help from members on this forum or AVS or others I would imagine.

Please let us know the source of the information about no manufacturers making blu-ray players anymore as that would back up your comment.

Also, physical media is going to be around for some time and not everyone wants to stream or lives in an area without adequate internet speeds to stream HD content properly. So these BD/DVD players help fill that void. Many libraries still have a lot of physical media for borrowing as well as electronic downloads so there are a variety of choices out there.

Don’t ignore the X800’s issues. It’s a solid player but there have been plenty of reports about players freezing up or having trouble with certain titles.

Indeed. Troll above is obvious, but he's not wrong that if you google there are TONS of threads, videos and posts about the Sony players having issues with some discs. That's why I know I'm not alone in having two in a row have issues playing some UHDs.

My LG player plays EVERYTHING I put it in it though, and some people say their Sony does too, so it really seems to depend on the player you get.

It could all be luck of the draw with the player. For me, I have had my x800 for a year or so now. We use it almost every evening watching Blu-ray/4k UHD movies. The only problems I have had so far were due to finger smudges on the disc - once cleaned off though, no problems. Maybe I've been lucky, but up until now I've been happy with the x800.

Had the X800 for 18 months, haven't used it as my 'go to' player so it's had little usage in recent months but it's never set a foot wrong whenever I've fired it up. Maybe me dropping it when I first took it out of the box knocked some sense into it?

I’ve had a couple of freezes (one with Solo and the other with The Lion King), but both were fixed by unplugging the player, and neither repeated the issue after I restarted the discs. My ongoing issue with the X800 is still the brief audio drops that I have from time to time. They’re repeatable at the exact same spot, so it isn’t a ‘clean the disc’ issue. Some discs drop the audio for a second when I have BD Audio Mix set to Off, like many say it should be, and toggling that setting to On will fix it. Other discs drop audio for a second when BD Audio Mix is set to On, and again, toggling it back to Off will fix it. It’s a crapshoot. Other than that, this player is great.

Yes, the text and logos on the main screen and in the settings menus are a bit lower res than they should be for a $250 machine, but that’s a cosmetic complaint.
