John absolutely knew it was Hans. Not only did he see through his poor accent, he also saw the board with the names on it, seeing right through the "Bill Clay" thing. When John hands him the gun, you clearly see him putting in an empty magazine and holds down the slide release when he pretends to chamber a round. Not holding down the slide release would have locked the gun open, giving away the ruse. I just don't think John expected backup so soon.

I think McClane wasn’t sure. Hans passed the Bill Clay test but the accent and story were still unconvincing. The final test was the gun, which Hans instantly failed.

Hah! Yeah, just finished watching it. Great movie. Don't know what I should watch next, but I think maybe I will break Christmas movie viewing right now, and skip Lethal Weapon.

Already watched the sequel several days ago, but Die Hard is THE Christmas Eve evening film for me. Used to watch it around the beginning of December in years gone by, but now it holds that coveted position.
