As happy as I am that we are to be releasing AAF, which also stars the beautiful Maureen O'Hara and the great Anthony Quinn. I'm shocked that most of Errol Flynn's classics have not been released on Blu-ray.

Damn. My Kino "want list" keeps growing. Today it grew by 5. After blind buying Cobra Woman and falling in love with it (and Maria Montez), I cant wait to get these. I imagine they will look beautiful. And some Errol Flynn and early Tony Curtis is just icing on the cake. Thanks Kino!

The Universal DVD for Cat & the Canary had a weird issue where it would fade in and out of a very subtle green tint for (I believe) the entire film. It wasn’t as noticeable as it sounds, but enough to be distracting. Do you happen to know if that’s fixed?

What is the actual target gamma your company uses as a guideline when mastering your films? I am suspecting somewhere around 2.0 to 1.9 gamma. While the transfers have great film grain the overly brightened picture washes out the color, blacks are now muddy, contrast is decreased and as a result the picture can looks dull and flat. The last link is a perfect example. Black should be black! The gamma here has been elevated to the point your can see the film grain in the black, which at this point is no longer black, it is a muddy dark gray. True black is the absence of color or light which my OLED is capable of. No additional picture information is being gained by elevating the gamma. I can see elevating the gamma when black crush is present. The MGM masters don't really exhibit that. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-r...es_blu-ray.htm https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=98542&i=1&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=31620&i=1&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=43373&i=3&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=72387&i=6&l=0 https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...109825&i=7&l=0 It seems if Eureka and Kock get the same title the first thing they do is correct the gamma or leave it as it was on the original master. Most of these titles are from MGM and these transfers are not new (Long Riders being the exception) and most from the 2000's so I am sure a Gamma of 2.2 was used in the mastering. Those same titles under Kino definitely had the 2.2 Gamma boosted. Today a Gamma of 2.4 would be the ideal. Concerning the MGM titles many are on Amazon Prime so stopping at a certain timecode isn't hard and good Blu-ray player can stop the at the exact frame to compare. I do have a Kino setting on my TV which is the only studio I do this for or have ever needed to. I normally watch with a gamma of 2.4 with that setting I lower brightness from 50 to 45 in essence trying to achieve a gamma of 2.6 to correct for the mastering on many of your titles. I may be wrong, but based on clues (4 Durbin, 3 Hope, 1 WWII, 1 'western', 'some' Wayne, 2 more noir) I think the remaining 40s Universal titles (1 1940, 4 1941, 2 1942, 1 1944, 2 1947, 2 1948) pretty much pick themselves:
Seven Sinners (1940) Nice Girl? (1941) Shepherd of the Hills (1941) 2 of Caught in the Draft/Louisiana Purchase/Nothing But The Truth (1941) Wake Island (1942) My Favorite Blonde (1942) Can't Help Singing (1944) I'll Be Yours (1947) Something in the Wind (1947) So Evil My Love (1948) A Woman's Vengeance (1948) Last edited by BarnDoor; 04-29-2020 at 09:36 AM. |

I'm still holding out hope that "The Accused" will be considered a 1948 release and makes it in instead of either of the other two possibilities. It's a very well written suspenser with award worthy performances from Loretta Young and Wendell Corey. The film's appeared on DVD but definitely deserves to make the leap to Blu-ray.

Pre-1924 films: All films made in 1923 and before are now in the public domain, as of 2020. 1924-1929 (silent films): Paramount themselves own all surviving silent films (that are still under copyright) with the exception of The Four Feathers (1929) which is owned by Universal. 1929-1949 (sound films): In 1958, MCA approached Paramount to buy most (not all*) of the films they made from 1929-1949, around 750 or so films, for 50 million dollars, in order to use them for TV. Seeing little value in any of the movies from this period, Paramount accepted the offer, and MCA now owned the movies from this time frame. When MCA merged with Universal in 1962, Universal gained ownership of these films and has owned them ever since. *Notable exceptions in spoiler tag below: [Show spoiler] 1950-present: Paramount themselves own any movies they made from 1950, up until the present day. Seeing as Will Penny is from 1967, I would assume Paramount themselves own it, and any release would have to come from or be licensed from them. |
