Still could cancel depending on the standard set or an LE set more to my liking (especially if an LE keeps the book and classic subs). I have no need for either dub but do like the classic subs. And of course I'm a sucker for artbooks. Shame the bonus features are probably on the main discs or I would just sell those and keep the classic ones.

So it’s confirmed, the “Official Version” of this release is the Netflix dub. Oh boy, I can already feel the collective nerd rage rising…

Is there a reason they can't just say Netflix/ADV/Manga dub like discotek does? It's making it more complicated than it needs to be.

If GKids somehow got the rights to include the VSI dub of the show, I like to think that means there's a sliver of hope that whoever gets the home video license to Thrice Upon a Time (and rescue license the previous three Rebuild films) will include the Dubbing Brothers dub. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea for those who prefer how FUNI handled the dub, but that's where I place my bets for.

Wish I knew. Also I asked for full clarification.

I'm concerned about the bitrate more than anything. I'm no video quality expert but they have to fit 52 episodes, 4 movies, and seven hours of bonus features across 11 BD50 discs (when you factor in the separate discs for the different dubs). From the low quality screenshot of the set, it looks like they're putting 6 or 7 episodes on each disc, for a total of four discs for the main show, and then putting D&R + EoE on a single disc, with a separate disc for the bonus features. To be fair, the JP Blu-Ray boxset also had discs with six episodes on it, but Death (True)^2 was put on its own separate disc from EoE, and it looks like here they're putting both movies onto one disc, which could potentially result in a worse bitrate (especially when you factor in the extra audio tracks).

I wonder if they're splitting the "Official" dub and "Classical" dub across separate discs to keep the bitrate as high as possible? At the same time, not including the OA episodes almost makes it look like they want to conserve the number of discs they're using. Either way, it's unfortunate that the OA episodes aren't included, especially for an "Ultimate" edition.

I pre-ordered this but I want to learn more from GKIDS about what's included on each disc, and maybe get some proper lossless screenshots of what the video actually looks like. I might end up cancelling and purchasing the JP Blu-Ray Box instead if the video quality is going to be noticeably worse.

Its only Official for GKids, for whatever that is worth. The official English dub is whatever the viewer thinks it is.

Finding out the official version is the Netflix dub is actually worse when you think about it. First off, the English dub is apparently widely criticized for being an awful localization (no emotion and dry). Also, I remember a big uproar about Netflix censoring/altering suggestive scenes and dialogue, effectively ruining the intended immersion and meaning of said scenes. And when you think about it, since the official version is the Netflix cut, those who only care about the subbed version will not only get the Netflix subs, but you will also be subjected to those cut/censored scenes. Effectively, I (and some others) am only really getting this for the blu-ray version of the classic dub. But even that is a moot point because it is most likely missing Fly Me to The Moon along with the Official Version. This is very disappointing. And to think, after all the speculation about a new localization script and new cast…

So for those only looking to own the episodes and two movies the question is, “is the upgraded video/audio of the 2003 cut worth the edited out content/FMTtM?” Either way I’m being buried with my Platinum DVD set at this point. It’s looking like this is going to remain the definitive North American edition for all time. Always.

Don't know why these packaging shots aren't on the US page, but the UK page shows it's a clamshell box, in addition to the three other packaging shots already on the GKIDS store page.

So I'd have to buy a copy of the UE in order to get the "classic dub" (that's included on bonus discs in the UE) ??

bwahahahahaha nope. I mean that's a nope on all of your upcoming standard editions too if that's the case.

I can wait until NGE on BD release #5.5555, Gkids. This is starting to look like a Dragonball Z situation. Just a series of inferior releases trying to get people to double-dip. As if there's not going to be a way nicer CE than this coming out sometime down the line.

Boy did Gkids lose a ton of public good will today! What a disaster launch of the most anticipated anime-on-disc release of 2021!

Seven episodes at 25 minutes each is just shy of three hours; Death and EoE come to a little over two and a half. If they're not sharing the discs with any extras, it's not that tight a squeeze. I'm not worried

I do enjoy the VSI dub being described as the official one because that implies ADV actually created a fandub.

It sure as hell sounds like one. Has not aged well at all.

Technically the VSI dub is the "official" one because it was under Khara's direct supervision.

Which makes the naming of the official dub even more pathetic considering the production value behind the ADV Dub is superior in every relevant category.
