So I do want the boxed set then? Did they ever remaster the extended cut in 4K, or no?

Not sure what all is being asked here, but basically:

The 2018 4K UHD release has theatrical cut of the movie, and a 5.1 track based on the original 70mm split surround track, and an Atmos mix based on the 2001 remix created for the extended cut.

For whatever reason, the 2023 4K box set version of the disc replaced the 5.1 with the 2.0 track that was on the Blu-ray, and newer copies of the standalone release had this new disc instead of the old one. Both tracks could be considered "original audio," but the 2.0 is much thinner and weaker sounding.

Neither he 2001 "special edition" nor the extended TV cut have been remastered in 4K. And neither are included in the box set. But they are available together in a 2-disc Blu-ray set from Warner Archive.

Hope all that helps!

It does. Is the 2018 4K worth getting for other reasons, if I could even find a copy at this point? Great transfer?

Video-wise, the 2018 and 2023 discs are the same. I think it looks fine, but many here disagree.

The only difference is the audio.

Sorry to bump an old thread but it just came to my attention that Warner Bros.studio tour on Superman Day had a presentation of the ‘78 classic , was wondering if anyone knows whether it was the rumoured newly restored print. Thanks

On May 27th, Harrison & Company, the Korean disc distributor of WB and Paramount titles, has officially announced the re-release of "Superman: The Movie," which is set for June 26th, 2025 Korean release.

-(H&Co.'s announcement on Instagram)
https://www.instagram.com/p/DKItnAxSEy_/

The standard Blu-ray is the same disc as before, which is the extended version with Dolby Digital 5.1, since this is the only standard Blu-ray edition with Korean subtitles.
The 4K Dolby Vision disc has the same sub/dub listing as before, but...!

The 4K disc is now set to include a DTS 5.1 track, in addition to the Atmos and DTS-HD 2.0 tracks.
It hasn't been 100% confirmed if the DTS 5.1 is the same as 2018 4K's Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but H&Co. did mention the 'DTS 5.1 English track that was removed from the previous disc.'

H&Co.'s description also mentions that the color issue of Christopher Reeve's opening credit has been improved, along with some additional technical improvements such as pixelation.

So far, I've only found pre-orders on Korean sites, plus a Taiwanese edition is also available for pre-order on YesAsia, where it also mentions the DTS 5.1 track in the 'Product Information' section. I assume there will be pre-orders at other regions as well, but I haven't found any North American announcement yet.

It's not enough of a change for me to double dip. They need to have the corrected Krypton sequences from a better archival source included and the Donner Extended Cut scenes added back in.

Be aware the previous Blu-ray had DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio, but it was the 2001 remix.

If you listen to the commentary on the Extended Cut, Donner doesn’t seem enthused about the additional scenes. I think he preferred the theatrical cut. Mank talks about the traps Luthor sets up for Superman when he arrives at his lair as superfluous and not necessary to the story. I like the cut scenes, but I think the theatrical cut is better. Of course it would be nice if WB put out both versions on 4k.

Yeah it sounds to me like they’re talking about the DTS-MA 5.1 track from the Anthology Set, which was the revised sound mix before it was further upmixed to Atmos. I’d love to be wrong though.

I much prefer the extended 151 min cut -- minus the "girl scouts sign falling" scene -- so I never got the 4K UHD. I will if they ever release it and I hope for the rumored new remastered transfer.

They also need to put out the full TV cut, its 2017 release by Warner Archive is incomplete, missing the part where Lex puts Otis on the gurney in the back of the ambulance and then Otis and that gurney get dragged from the outside as the vehicle drives away.
They screwed up the release of all 3 cuts of this movie, Warner Bros. is peak incompetence and they need to change immediately.

isn't that inaccurate? There's several TV cuts (or maybe just 2?). The one on the disc is one of them.

I mainly bought this movie to get the Dolby Digital soundtrack that used the 70mm six track sound source so I could experience that for the first time.

When I received it, it turned out Amazon sent me the wrong disc.

The upc on mine is 883929646180. If anyone knows if that's the one with the 70mm six track audio please let me know. Otherwise I'm pretty sure I won't buy this movie again.

Here's the front cover of the one I bought...

Yep, Warners did a switcheroo on this one and there's no way to tell from the outside packaging! If it has the Dolby logo printed on the disc, that's the later reissue without the original six track. The first pressing from 2018 has the Ultra HD Blu-ray logo on the disc.

At this point it would be a miracle if any online retailer happened to have old stock left on their shelves with the 70mm six-track surround mix on the disc. The moment the news dropped of it being left and people rushing to get their hands on it, that would have been the time when one would be fortunate enough to get it. 2+ years later? Practically no chance whatsoever.
