That's what I'm saying though, some of that is actually due to the character as written. His sympathetic qualities - helping Ian, Nick and Sarah after the trailer incident, asking Sarah if she's alright when he spots the blood on her jacket, grieving his friend Ajay and telling off Ludlow towards the end - isn't all just due to Postlethwaite's performance. While of course his respectable performance is what helps sell the character.

It really is his performance. An actors got to deliver on what they are given. If the script could act it self, there would be no need for actors.

Like his character exposition, when he's explaining his motivations for agreeing to the job. The prize of a rex buck. That dialogue could just as easily be flat and trite. White hunter wants to hunt the biggest game.

But Postlethwaite delivers it with such conviction, and with an articulation that shows the character is more intelligent. He gives more depth than what is written in the script.

The script is beyond horrible. Why would a womanizer like Malcolm, who probably has many kids (and most likely doesn’t care about them) with many different women, decide to play daddy to what obviously is someone else’s daughter?

I was never big on any of the sequels. I think I liked JPIII the best as it was fun enough and just flowed fine for what it was. Although the UHD BD for it is subpar, it looks a hell of a lot more natural than the over-processed BD.

You do know that people of mixed European and African heritage can be born with very pale or dark skin right?

Or any other ethnic groups that have darker skin. Heck brother has a friend who's dads Pakistani, and his mother white Scottish. She's so pale she might as well be transparent. Her son though, dark brown skin.

What are you on about? He was with a woman who dipped and left her daughter with him. Obviously. The Malcolm from the first movie would have taken her to the police station and called it a day. Why would he take care of someone else’s daughter when he doesn’t even seem to care about his own kids? How is this in character?

Yep, the performance is important in selling it, as I quickly edited my post to acknowledge, but it seems you quoted it before that.

Just saying, it's part script, part performance.

There are many ways to explain that.

1. She could be his biological daughter with a black woman. It's not uncommon for a mixed child to look more like one parent than the other.
2. She could be adopted. Spielberg himself has several adopted children, and a couple of them happen to be black.
3. She could be his stepdaughter. Entering a relationship with someone who already has a child and forming a bond with that child isn't that uncommon. Having relations with many women doesn't mean one is a complete psychopath incapable of caring about people. He says in the first film that he loves kids, so it could include ones that aren't strictly "his" from the beginning.

Never understood this complaint. Again, it's perfectly possible, so it's strange to get hung up on that specific point in a fictional universe where all kinds of impossible things are reality.
