G-rated movies in the 70s would sometimes get away with a few "damns" and "hells" here and there. (Hell, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN was PG in 1976, despite some fairly prominent F-bombs.)

So I always figured this was sort of a bit of that leftover permissiveness before the MPAA started cracking down a little more in the 80s.

Hammer's Countess Dracula scored a "PG" rating in America when it originally came out in the early 70s, and that contained more tits than an aviary.

Apparently the MPAA didn't care. Not one damn bit.

You think "My oath of celibacy is on record Captain. May I assume my duties?" is worthy of a PG today, but not in 1979?
The line would have sailed over the head of any kid in the audience.

It's the transporter screams that would terrify send them under the seats!

I’m shocked that didn’t earn the movie a PG in ‘79.

Then again, 2001: A Space Odyssey somehow ended up with a G in 1968.

And yes, I specifically remember reading in the announcement of the TMP DE back in 2001 that it was the new sound mix that changed the rating from G to PG.

I've mentioned it in other threads but there's quite a bit of gunplay and gore at the end of Beneath the Planet of the Apes and that was a G in 1970. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger even had a skinny dipping scene with nip slip, a G in 1977.

What you call creepy, I call the ‘70s being the ‘70s.

I can confirm this report. The text includes lots of background details about how sexually liberated everyone is in the 23rd century. A fun read for fans of the movie.

And yes, Roddenberry did write the book himself. There's a rumour that it was ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster (who did in fact ghostwrite the novelization of the original 1977 'Star Wars' movie, credited to George Lucas), but nope.

Yeah, I've read that. It's bizarre. Kirk is having trouble restraining himself around women, and it describes him getting an uncontrollable erection at least a couple of times.

Yep, marriages are limited-term contracts that need to be renewed (No more divorce! Yay?), and the Deltans and their, um, abilities are definitely a Roddenberry creation.

Also some very bad science. "Los Angeles Island", as if the old trope of CA sliding into the sea was an actual possibility (anyone with a passing knowledge of geology or seismology knows it's not), and damming the Mediterranean Sea would be a terribad idea (it's actually been proposed more than a few times and the results would be pretty catastrophic).

John Carpenter made a documentary about it.

This movie got down to about $12 and I finally picked it up. Not my favorite storyline, but what a great Atmos demo. And I have never seen it look this good. I might just replace the copy that came in the complete set. What a nice job they did on this. A benchmark for what is possible with dated visuals and sound.

The fact almost everyone owns this now near $10 and they probably have a theatrical disc or two the milking can be complete with a stand alone SLV release

I assume he means he got the theatrical in the original boxset and is replacing it with the director's cut.

Just noticed that the SteelBooks for The Motion Picture and Search for Spock UHDs are readily available and are selling for less than list.

I am beginning to think we won't see the other 4 TOS movies in SteelBook.
