Jurassic Park III:
Film: I have always enjoyed it, and still do. It's smaller in terms of overall story, or let's say more personal than the predecessors, but the action is equally impressive, and I like the adventure aspect of it. The cast is terrific with Tea Leoni, William H. Macy, Sam Neil, whom I was glad to see back. Gotta love his dryness, which beatuifully reflects the dryness of the fossils he uncovers. Also, he isn't exactly a people lover, which I can very much relate to. Anyway, the couple's banter his pretty funny. Billy is a nice addition too, as Dr. Grant and he seem to bond, despite their differences.... It was great to get to see different dinosaurs, and not just more of the same. Spinosaurs Egypticus is a worthy foe, and looks and sounds awesome. We also get to see a number of other beautiful creatures, albeit far too briefly for my taste. 4/5 PQ: Oh dear. This one is weird, and disappointing. Detail is great for the most part, as one can easily see pores, hairs, fabrics, and patterns. Grain/noise is only apparent and distracting in the bright clouds, which also suffer from some unusual and annoying flicker (during the trip to the island) in some parts of the clouds, which is very weird and frustrating. Black levels are fine, and I didn't notice any black crush worthy of mention, but highlights are blown-out way too frequently. Of course primarily during VFX shots, where they have tried to bring down the increased brightness, so it wouldn't clip, but the dynamic range just wasn't there, so it's not as bright, but still blown out. You can easily do that with a photograph that has highlight clipping, and then try to regain some of those details, which generally doesn't succeed. Well, that's what we have here. Also, it looks bland and kind of lifeless for a UHD, easily making it the weakest of all my viewed UHDs thus far. Another downer is the slightly-medium processed look that quite a few shots, often medium distance, display. Why couldn't they just leave them alone?? It just lacks that natural vitality one would like to see here. I didn't spot any banding, macroblocking, or other horrible artifacts, so it's clearly superior to the noisy BD, and the preferred format, but it's far from a pleasant one. 3.25/5 AQ: Once again, JP shines in the audio department. I particularly enjoyed the discreet nature of the music, which is nicely spread out throughout the speakers. The dinos sound grand and natural. Sound effects and atmospheric are clear and dynamic, blah, blah. There was one time when a dino's call (I believe it was a raptor) in the left rear speaker sounded a bit distorted. Other than that, it was perfect. Surround activity is frequent and detailed. Also in the back, which is neat. Nothing to complain about here. Of course, the amount of sounds in the jungle can't possibly keep up with TLW, but I can't incorporate that into the rating. 5/5 |

Jurassic World has some really nice HDR. At a first glance the 1080p video can tend to look as good the the UHD but the HDR does make a difference. the daytime HDR is definitely more impactful on my Panny DX over the LG C8 OLED. Also I am noticing slightly lesser grain on the UHD than the BD. Would like to hear some experts' opinions here

Just got a copy of the 25th anniversary 4k set . . on my Jurassic Park disc the scene where Ellie and Alan are walking back up the hill talking about having kids, well, the scene starts out as very bright and sunny, then, in the middle of the scene, the picture darkens about 50% and stays that way until Hammonds helicopter lands . . is this on everyone's disc or did I get a bum copy?? Thanks

What’s the honest opinion with the transfers of these films now the dust has settled? (admittedly about 65 million years after release) I bought the 4K trilogy on digital, when it was cheap, as I had read mixed responses to the disc transfers which put me on the fence about spending the additional money for the discs (even though they are my favourite films). While I would love the better sound/picture vs a 4K stream, is it worth upgrading over the Blu ray/digital versions that I already own, or best to wait and see if they re-release them in another 65 mill?

I actually rewatched Lost World and JP III this week and honestly it looks so much better than I remember after the initial view. Either I've seen worse transfers since but more likely because I own a different display and player today. Lost World hasn't aged that well as a movie but the transfer is very good. JP III, a guilty pleasure, surprisingly comes across quite watchable now but it still is very grain free which I assume is what triggered most folks. There are a couple of scenes where some grain residue looks bit chunky. But detail is still good. Color-wise it looks a little dull but not dark at all. Blacks are good on both discs. While not among the top transfers from Universal, still not the worst one either.

Yeah TLW looks quite a bit better than 1 & 3 (just like the BD's), but I reckon it can still look better. |

Thank you for sharing your opinions. If I’m honest, I’ll stick with the digital versions for now and wait it out - if ever a remaster (or supergood deal on this set) happens. They don’t seem as great as they could be, but I’m not sure what the original sources and scans are like, and I don’t have an elephant memory for the pictures 20+yrs ago. I love each of the sequels equally and the original is one of the most important films for me, 10 years old at the cinema watching that was quite an experience. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer, I have been a member for 12 years and a constant lurker for the same amount but always worry about posting these sorts of questions. Many thanks!

III, with its flaws, on UHD still looks a hell of a lot more analog than the BD.
