That... Would be something lol. That'd be a nice little surprise for any of us who pop in the ADV Blu rays lol

I personally hate packaging that's oversized and won't fit on my media shelves, and while I like Eva, nearly $300 was too much for me to justify. I just want standard packaging, and I don't care about the extra junk. But I wouldn't mind paying more than standard edition prices and getting a more regular Collector's/Limited Edition.

What does everyone think the chances are that there could be a Collector's Edition with both the original and new translation discs? Maybe using regular bluray cases in a normal sized box? I'd be fine with paying, say, $100-$150 for that.

I'm not sure if they've actually said there will be multiple editions, or if people are just assuming there might be something else besides a standard set coming.

Don’t worry, I imagine the chances of any one of the lesser editions having both dubs is EXTREMELY likely. As I mentioned a few times, they pointed out the exclusive contents to the UE in the list (which was just the paperweight and the NERV badge). For those that feel like they might have missed out on the ADV dub, don’t give up hope yet.

We'll know more in 10 days, according to yet another countdown timer on their website lol.

I was just thinking: they would need access to the original dub’s stems to remove the FMttM instrumental from the background of the scene with Misato and Kaji. Wonder if that happened or not. I pray to god they don’t switch to Japanese or mute it all because that was probably Allison Keith’s best scene as Misato.

Oh man, I can't take any more of this inane speculation about all these NGE Blu-ray releases - I got my pre-order in, so now I'm going to unsubscribe from everything Evangelion in this forum, just to retain my sanity...

The ginormous packaging with nothing really useful? The atrocious shipping cost on top? I didn't expect FMTM to be there, but I hoped it would be. Just because you are happy with it doesn't mean we all are. I couldn't give a flip about the dub so I certainly don't need 2 sets of discs either.

Cheap fix for all those angry about "Fly Me to the Moon" not being included -- just play this video using the timestamps after you get to the end of each episode. Voila.

GKIDS also confirmed to someone asking on Twitter that the ADV extras like the commentaries and video analyses won't be included. That doesn't surprise me because ADV's extras never seem to make it over to other companies' reissues of their shows (none of FUNimation's ADV rescues have their extras AFAIK), with the exception of AnimEigo's Gunsmith Cats and Megazone 23. In fact, I don't think those extras made it to ADV's own Platinum thinpack. Just one more reason for me to keep my Platinum Holiday collection.

What exactly changed that made it possible to license FMTTM for the original DVD releases, but not this release?

You’re right! maybe we will get to keep this one thing. Just don’t tell GKids until after they print the discs.

BTW, I just had a “duh moment” and realized why they are doing separate discs for the Classic Dub. Since the ADV dub is considered a bonus to the Blu-ray release and will only be included in special editions, it’s much easier to print out an extra set of discs containing only the bonus dub than it would be to print out one set with both dubs and ANOTHER set with only the official (Netflix) dub (just for any standard/barebones edition). Mystery solved, unfortunately… sorry guys…

I just about shit in my shorts when I found out this set was $300 and weighed 11 1/2 lbs-good god!! You'd really have to be a hardcore NGE fanboy to buy that. I have a lot of NGE shit including the ADV "holiday" repack of the Platinum 7 disc release as well as the thin pack Platinum set and the crappy Manga dvds of the "movies". Also have various versions of those cobbled together from assorted sources (all english dubbed only) and the 3 US releases of the Rebuild movies. Aside from the trinkets and bells and whistles-WHY?

Once again have to point out that Eva also uses motifs of Fly Me To The Moon and one moment in particular hits really hard with it that absolutely does not hit as hard with it absent.

Something to keep in mind in that situation, Sunrise is the license-holder and is calling most of the shots, not Nozomi/RightStuf which is merely the distributor. Sunrise decides much of the stuff with the Gundam releases. The distribution deal came about because Sunrise gave up trying to find someone to unload Gundam onto, a franchise that didn't exactly do great over here outside of Wing (one of Bandai Entertainment's all-time top 5 best-sellers), and a few other entries.

Japan realized the value of music licensing and started charging insane amounts of money, which is an industry wide issue. For Eva specifically, the parties who own the song and its variations want an absurd amount of money. The value of a new house… for every individual usage… of which there are over 30.

Not just the dub, but the original (and far superior) subtitles too, which means the Japanese version will be encoded a whole second time instead of just including those subs as an additional subtitle track. Super bizarre.

I remember back when Funimation licensed Eden of the East it cost them something like $10,000 per use of the Oasis song in the OP. So they compromised by just using it in the first episode.

They didn't make it to the Platinum thinpak because ADV often stripped out extras for those as they viewed them as "budget releases" and to encourage people to buy the singles which paid the bills instead of waiting for the box set every time.
Quote:
Thinpak releases are designed to keep the product on shelves but also to act as a “budget? release. This is why ADV does not include extras on the thinpak releases.
https://web.archive.org/web/20070927...m.php?item=260

The extras were later included on the Platinum Tin and Holiday Edition however which reused the Platinum singles discs. The most tragic loss is the Shinji's rant easter egg.
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/enc...?id=49&page=29
BTW, ADV-made extras have sometimes made it to re-releases. FUNimation somehow got all of the extras for Noir including the commentaries, and the easter eggs including this (the commentaries themselves were easter eggs to begin with). This is included on both the Blu-ray and DVD, though if they re-release Noir on Classics, it's going to lose the extras DVD from the Anime Classics set.

So the 7th disc in those Platinum Complete sets is just all the extras? I was just looking at the Platinum sets on eBay earlier today, an was wondering what the extra disc was between the Platinum Thinpak and the Holiday release. I love thinpak DVD releases in general, and I never watch a single extra for any anime or hollywood movie, so if disc #7 is just extras, I definitely would be a candidate for the Platinum Thinpak if I ever decided to snag a DVD set. Anyone looking to sell off of theirs, lol?!

EDIT: OK, BOA just explained it, so that confirmed my suspicions. Cool, I'll take the Thinpak set!
