We already know the original has a nice 4K transfer. Hopefully the sequels at least get nice 2K transfers with no DNR/EE. That's all i ask for!!

You info/pics on the Heretic is terrific. If I were you I would approach Criterion at some point. Besides their work on acknowledged classics, they have done amazing versions of films that are not normally regarded as great by the masses- like Fiend without a Face and the Blob just sparkles like it was shot yesterday (while a personal fave it's usually thought of in terms of low budget 50's sci-fi) the point being they seem to be more broad minded in what would be an interesting release and make it as good as possible. WB also dropped the ball on anything Special for Poltergeist which is also a crime. Just don't understand when they are offered free things from your collection, which would only entice us more yet they still refuse. |

But there are those other scenes I posted previous that could be put back and a more complete edition of the film would be nice. Years ago I had contacted Criterion in hopes because it was John Boorman they would be interested - they were not. I had also brought up ZARDOZ to them as well. Quote:
It's known that there are cut sequences, it's even come across in the film's CD Soundtrack release by Goldsmith. When compared to the paperback novel, which was based on the script it easy to piece together what was cut. One of those cuts was actually in a TV Spot. Maybe when Speilberg is dead more will be released - if he hasn't had it destroyed. |

A friend gave me a paperback of "The Exorcist" many years back.
On the blurb it said "The devil is inside this book." I had it sitting by my bed and I was having horrible nightmares every night that it was there, so I gave him back the book and the nightmares stopped.... |

The Exorcist is a great film. I think its still very effective and holds up well even today. I've read a lot of posts by people on You Tube and such that say that the film's not scary, or that they laughed all the way through it, or that it sucks, so on and so forth. I dont get it!!! Maybe its because when i first saw it back in '89 when i was 10 or 11, there wasnt many possession films yet. Or the fact that i saw it at a young age. I was terrified!! I slept on the couch for like 2 weeks in the living room with the tv on because i didnt want to sleep in my room by myself. The Exorcist is the only horror film that had that kind of lasting impact on me. Maybe kids today are to desensitized to really enjoy it like people my age and older do. Counting down the day until i get my set.

You have a point but read comments other places as well. Yeah, a lot of those people making comments like that are probably trying to be hard asses too but still.

More then that, The Exorcist is a smart horror film. It requires intelligence and for the audience to make a connection with the characters for it to be truly disturbing. This can be a challenge with anyone but especially so of teenagers. Jump ahead 40 years from when the film was first made and it's even that much harder. Youtube, cell phones, the internet in general, and the Grisly likes of Saw, Hostel, and internet porn have warped most kids minds to the point where unless you're a rare film fan (at that age), it's hard to appreciate what the exorcist does until you're much older/more mature. Hell, there are plenty of users on this board that still can't appreciate the horror in the Exorcist and these are self proclaimed movie fans.

Horror movies, like any genre, escalate as generations pass. Horror films aim to shock and disturb, and for that to continue they have to get increasingly intense, gory, violent, etc. as the years progress. It's easy for us to look down on the kids who don't appreciate the genius of films like The Exorcist and Halloween, but how can they? They see worse stuff on network programs every day. If we look at horror movies from the 40s and 50s, only a small handful of them would retain the same level of impact that they had for audiences who saw them during their initial release. It's just the way things are.
