If it was, then somebody inexplicably decided to redo the color-timing as if they were the using the old Blu-Ray transfer as a reference.

If it wasn't and they just used an older master instead, that would be even weirder and WTF. I really hope they do go back and do a new better transfer for the 30th.
Not just the colour, even the framing is exactly the same. They WERE using the 2000 HD master as reference while prepping the 4K disc! The greens and the overall low contrast pink-blue wash is exactly like the 2D Blu-ray and the HDTV broadcast versions from the early 2000s. The original film on 35mm has denser contrast, warmer colours. the skintones look more sunkissed and the Ford Explorers' greens and yellow look darker and more distinct than it does on the 2D and 4K BD. The tones are similar to the 3D Blu-ray, but without that orange-wash that it has. In fact, the very first VHS editions of JP trilogy had the original 35mm photochemical timing replicated. It is only from the second VHS editions that the timing was changed to a more neutral, low contrast and flat colour look.

On the hunt for the steelbook collection that says "Jurassic Park", not "Jurassic World". If anyone is willing to part ways with theirs, message me.

I reckon they did that with JAWS for UHD, that they didn't scan anything anew, they just went back to the raw scan that they did back in 2012 (yes, studios keep the raw scan data just in case, like how Lawrence of Arabia's actual 8K scans were archived onto LTO tape) and started over.

In JAWS' case the data was of high enough quality that it still looked great in 2020, perhaps a little more could've been eked out but as it is, it works. But in JP1's case they went back to something that was just a bit too old, and having some eejit hammer the opticals and the CG VFX with DNR doesn't help. They may have even done the same thing for JP3, I don't mind the UHD and it bests the BD (apart from the horrendous black crush) but again it just doesn't look as fresh as one might expect.
And has a 2012 and older scan ever looked amazing on this format? I don't know as much as you and many on the answer; but it sorta seems to me to be the tides at least wash over the concept you can't just grab a scan from back then and repurpose it. There's something baked into that even if it was "state of the art" and cost them an arm and a leg at the time (such that they wouldn't feel fiscally responsible investing again) we lose out on how good this could look.

And, yeah, I agree they shouldn't have touched anything wherever it happened. This is one title where as much as I still enjoy it in real-time, in between the viewings I wish this was considered reference PQ, the HDR on peoples top 20 lists, as justifying I could demo it all giddy and whatnot.

When you see how well Paramount have handled the Indiana Jones movies both on BD and in 4K and then you check Universal's treatment of Jurassic Park, it kind of looks like a wet fart in comparison.

Totally agree. It’s disgraceful in fact. The first movie needs a new remaster real bad.

While Paramount is generally better at 4K stuff it's hardly solely on the studio. Spielberg doesn't really care about this title anymore. Universal CAN produce worth a f*#$ if they decide to... Hence Schindler coming out as a totally wonderful PQ experience by comparison; complete with DV to cap it off.

Thus I put whatever level of travesty this master is for the first movie, at least, at the feet of him.

He seems to be increasingly into DNR/degraining and making film begin to look a bit like digital, which is weird since he still seems to insist on shooting on film (only to then now seem to even do some degrain and digital-looking on even new DCPs). Look at almost all Spielberg UHD and not sure any have full grain or 100% filmic look and even new DCPs. That said there are far worse.

It doesn't help that most of his older movies are at Universal who are already big fans of taking a little off the top, while CE3K at Sony and Shaving Private Ryan at Paramount are both grainier than all get out. Though there's definitely something going on with the grain on the Indy UHDs, still looks way more organic than a Universal joint but not entirely natural with the way the grain reacts to things.

2 and 3 look good. 1 could use a new scan.
The DTS-X mixes on all 3 are trash.

?

III got hammered with DNR. That's not to say that its worse than the Blu-ray, which is very problematic in its own right, but I wouldn't call it a winner of a disc.

Wouldn't say "hammered". But it's weird, it's got more detail than the BD but still looks like an old scan at the same time. And the black crush is disgraceful, like it is on Lost World (which looks fantastic otherwise).
