Have you tried disengaging the height and the surround back channels on your receiver, and listen to the audio in 5.1?

I use headphones and besides I don't think it works like that with remixes.

Everything is not going to perfect all the time because we don't live in a perfect world and that goes for movies as well. Flaws of any kind are subjected to be found in movies because they're not real. It's Hollywood!

Is this 4K UHD release worth a double dip? I own the standard Blu which has the DTS:X on it, and my Panny player is an awesome standard Blu upscaler. $10 at Gruv is tempting.

The bass with my old laserdisc used to rattle the walls with the impact tremors and the T Rex roars. And that was with just two large tower speakers, no sub at the time. I've not yet been able to replicate that.

For $10 - sure, go for it. However, The Lost World is the only one of the trilogy that's appreciably improved with a new transfer in 4K.

Though I agree JP1 is on the softer side visually, but I have never had a problem shaking floors and walls with the DTS:X mix when cranked. It would be preferable that Universal have audio track options to at least attempt to make everyone happy.

That's hotly debated it's actually a "new" transfer there either. But perhaps just a better handled older scan data (2K or 4K is unclear) than Jurassic Park was.

For some reason 2 and 4 are pleasing on the format, while 1 and 3? Eh not so much. My speculation is they split the boxset internally between two teams working on home video and one lead decided to DNR/process too aggressively for many tastes around here, while the other made the HDR quite wonderful and left grain fields well enough alone (compared).

I'm not familiar with the laserdisc, but for the UHD versions the bass has an aggressive rolloff at 30hz. My guess is that's likely why.

Besides the DTS technology has changed and upgraded since the laserdisc format. The DTS may had sounded better on the laserdisc (I don't know because I've invested in the technology) but that was then, and this is now.

What technology we have now is irrelevant. Why does every movie have to sound new? Let the movie be a good representation of itself and of its time. I mean, the original 5.1 mix won an academy award, that is the mix I want to hear! Leave it the hell alone!

Why every movie has to sound new? Because things change whether if we want them to or not. Nothing stays the same.

How to say in one simple statement you're easily moldable by corporate fad speak.

I like the DTS:X audio which is far better than most Atmos sound fields on other high profile 4K discs. And the HDR on the first film (the only one I care about..thanks Universal) is quite colorful, and punchy, Universal just doesn't get it when it comes to 4K.

They are still marketing these popular 4K catalog titles like they are mass consumer products. When in fact they are a niche within a niche. I wish they would take note or two from Sony.

I'm starting to think Jaws was a fluke.

You happen to like that movie's sound mix, but it's impossible to compare DTS vs Dolby since movies are mixed in one or the other (and not both). There's many many amazing and fantastically robust and enthralling audio mixes in Atmos so I have no idea how you can come to that conclusion. Also, keep in mind that DTS is typically mixed 3-4dB hotter all around compared to Dolby, so a lot of people perceive that loudness as "better".

You don't exactly mix in either format. The mix session files are uncompressed LPCM. The final encoding has DTS or Dolby's "secret sauce" to package the PCM data.
