I opened Netflix and someone else who had visted was logged in and I had no idea what they were watching was an option. I guess you don't know about some of the stuff unless you search for that type of stuff. I have had some things to say about streaming particularly in regards to quality but ... I found a silver lining! Last night I hosted "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" and my neighbor was certain she could borrow the disc to show her friends. I think she said something like "I'm going to need to take that disc to show Jim" I was happy to tell her it's free (with ads) on Vudu. Easy for everyone. ![]() Last edited by bhampton; 11-30-2023 at 04:24 PM. |

My daughter came to me last week demanding that we cancel our NETFLIX account in protest of them cancelling one of her shows. That prompted me to figure out the potential pitfalls for our family. In the past, anytime I've cancelled something, I discover just how invaluable such a thing is to some member of the family - usually my daughter... Nobody in our household uses it for movies. I watch documentaries on my phone at work and stand up comedy specials when I'm on a machine at the gym. My inlaws use my account between their homes here and in Florida...so far, I've never been asked to stump up for this extra use but have always figured I'd pay it when they eventually came around to implementing whatever add on they're working on..I have no idea what their usage is as I've never clicked on the user id that I setup for them under my account. Anyhoo..I figured that I'd simply start a PLEX server and give everyone accces to my movie library and maybe start purchasing TV titles to supplement what I'm losing with NETFLIX - although something in me just feels wrong about "buying" TV fare... I bought a couple of 14TB drives over BF and gave them to my son to start figuring out how we'll use PLEX. As an IT guy, he hates that I have our HT all setup to use voice commands with GOOGLE/HARMONY integration. He won't let me do the same for any other part of the house as he views it as a privacy issue...He will have a field day with this article... ![]() |

Horrible attitude. This is why so few TV shows are released on physical media and why so many of them have become completely unavailable or will be completely unavailable in the future.

Streamed content magically converted to physical media:
I signed up for (ad) Hulu during the $0.99 special - I time shift content from Hulu (and max) with my 25 year old VHS Hi-Fi VCR and an HDMI -> AV converter. At SP speed, these VHS recordings, when viewed with on my 32" HDTV look OK. Due to the letterboxed 16:9 in a 4:3 image displayed on a 16:9 HDTV, the softness of the VHS picture isn't much of a distraction and the surround sound survives this process (I may start a library of VHS tapes of content recorded from Hulu and max [hey - VHS is physical media too!]. My step dad does something similar with a DVR. He records (American) football games to watch without commercials. I tend to watch the highlights the following day because it's free and it's ready when I am and it's a few minutes instead of 4 hours and it's all good plays. ![]() He used to have a notebook and all the VHS were numbered. "Most consumers" are just looking for an a excuse to sit on the couch while checking their phone. That is whey they are OK with FAST and AVOD, an ad is just as good at passing that time on the couch as the content they are pretending to be watching. As for the icing on the cake. I am the one paying for the cake and the one eating the cake, why should I care what you believe "Most consumers" want? If they want the cake from the budget bakery that decided to compress the budget by buying salt instead of sugar, "Most consumers" can buy that cheap crappy cake, and I can buy my good proper cake with lots of quality icing. |

2) he never said buffering, you and cgpublic seem to be the only two that are focused on playback issue 3) he said his wife called Netflix blurry. Because streaming is a lot more compressed a lot more detail that should be there is sacrificed. I would not use blurry to explain it, but the term does make sense for what is happening 4) If you were to stream a UHD BD quality film from a streaming provider you would need a lot more then your 100/100Mbps internet connection and that is just for one person streaming at your place. |

Hate to be the barrier of bad news but some like Disney+ and Max will only do 1080 on your TV because they do not do 4K-SDR. See below a chart a AVS member created. The Nvidia Shield and your TV are Android with Google TV. On Shield Pro I have Refresh Rate app installed so I do get frame rate matching. [Show spoiler]

While I'm starting to come around to the idea that some non theatrical "movies" have value... I'll never feel that way about sit coms, soap operas and made for TV dramas...To me, they are all transitory, disposable fast food...I have no need to own any of it... I've seen every episode of ALL IN THE FAMILY, MASH, SEINFELD etc..We watch stuff like this as a family on a cheapie non HDR 4K 65" in the living room... most of it comes on the top tier package I get from my cable/ internet provider that I maintain so that I can watch sports and the various news channels...
