does it matter? at the end of the day they will lose what they paid for and there is nothing they can do about it.

One thing you can count on, there will be some whining whining by those that purchased. Bet most of the whiners never read their TOS.
I can understand people being PO and I feel for them but what is most annoying is that we probably had to deal with someone saying how they never lost something so far that means that they will never lose anything and you are the bad guide for pointing out that it can happen.

I have never died before but I am not dumb enough that it is proof that I can never die.

How are you a "Film Collector" when you physically don't have a Film?

Surprised anyone could call The Sopranos, The Wire, etc. "disposable." Hell, Band of Brothers is far superior to Saving Private Ryan.

PlayStation is pulling the plug on digital ownership

Quote:
As it turns out, paying for the digital rights to stream a show doesn't really mean that you own it forever.

PlayStation's recent decision to remove their already-purchased Discovery content from users' libraries has sparked the discussion of the nature of digital ownership. Set to take effect on December 31, this move has raised concerns among consumers who believed their digital purchases granted them permanent access to the content.

The notice sent to PlayStation users stated that due to "content licensing arrangements with content providers," all the Discovery content they previously purchased would be removed from video libraries. This development is a reminder of the stark reality that digital content, even when paid for, is essentially licensed and not owned, highlighting the fragility that digital ownership rights possess. The removal of Discovery content from the PlayStation libraries includes several TV shows like Mythbusters, Naked and Afraid, and others, leaving fans dismayed and questioning the value of their digital purchases.

I’m even more concerned that people would want to own discovery content.

You are the only one that starts name calling, and thinks they know so much. I haven't lost anything in a Decade, and as far as I know nothing has been Sanitized. I could see buying the Shark Week stuff as I do have some of that on disc. As you can imagine every week is Shark Week here.

I picked up the Deep Blue sea trilogy boxset a couple of weeks ago incidentally. Haven’t seen the last two, although I hear the third one is quite good. At the price, thought it was well worth a gamble.

And so it begins:

Apple & Paramount Consider Streaming Bundle

Quote:
Rival entertainment giants are exploring ideas of teaming up as they look to make their offerings more affordable and doing so in a way that doesn’t bring with it the costs and legal headaches that come with expensive acquisition deals. Bundles offer a quick and easy solution.

Sounds a lot like Cable if you ask me. Bundled packages with ads.

Since I don't have a single streaming subscription, I don't really care who partners with who.
The real question for me is, how is this going to relate to physical media because Apple doesn't seem to care about that and Paramount is still releasing quite a lot.

.. and yet I do...

Absolutely loved THE SOPRANOS... have gone through it twice.... but to me, it's TV and I draw a distinction between it and movies...

I have purchased THE GODFATHER trilogy, GOODFELLAS, CASINO, SCARFACE etc.. on every single physical format imaginable and will buy them on the next physical format.... and yet I don't have any obsessive notion of needing to "own" these titles or largely irrational (IMHO) concern that they will not always be available to me...

I guess you didint buy anything on playstation

Its like we have said the odds of each individual streaming service failing is decent and the odds your stuff is ported is a crap shoot at best.

Funimation is killing downloads at the end of the month and they already accidentally killed it for people who owned copies only giving the option to streamers a year earlier. I would say the odds that funimation digital copy codes still work by next year is around 50 50 given how things are going. playstation just screwed some people over and barnes and nobel is probably only a matter of time.

Downloading doesn't help you I had some films downloaded on my iphone six on vudu and within a couple of years they bricked all the downloads with an update my phone doesn't support. you would have to stip the drm which is as much work or more work then going physical and making digital backups.

That one has comprehension problems, does not understand the difference between “could lose” and “have lost”. He will tell you straight away, for the umpteenth time, he has not lost anything.

Digits lockers not even a thing here. When Flixster went bust, anyone with mobile copies of films lost a large amount of them.

Here, people seem to have leaped straight to subscription.

We will see more and more issues rising up every year. I have said it repeatedly, digital copies are the equivalent of MP3 downloads, digital dust collectors facing a future where access will be cut off.

Realistically, what can streaming companies do to minimize churn (it's so easy to just subscribe and then unsubscribe then subscribe...)

My $0.99/mo Hulu/ads is a little weird - the ads just suddenly interrupt the program (I guess I'm used to commercial TV where there are carefully planned ad breaks).

That link is a little misleading. The Verizon bundle of Max and Netflix is not available to anyone. You have to be a Verizon customer at a certain level to take advantage of it.

If you pause your Hulu content you will see a line with little dots on it. The dots are the ad breaks.
