I've never been a big Spielberg fan but Poltergeist is probably my favorite horror film. It has everything in it that makes for my kind of horror: ghosts, demons, the traveling to other dimensions, hallucinations caused by supernatural entities, rooms with flying objects, and not to mention the well crafted story and characters. And I love the suburb setting...

(Gremlins is great and The Goonies is one of my all time favorite movies.)

I love Poltergeist. It was the first modern horror movie I watched. Well that and The Fog, though I am almost certain that I watched Poltergeist first. Until then I had only seen the odd 1960-1970s gothic horror broadcasted on German TV.

To this day, that sound cue used for the supernatural still gives me the chills.

Nope. LIFEFORCE is one of Hooper's best films. In fact, it's my fave, and even resides in my top ten films of all time. The last great old-school Britishy Hammery sci-fi/horror film.

I saw it in the the theater when it came out and few people I know really thought about as a horror picture. It's much more an adventure type film. I never found anything about it scary.

I don't know maybe he mellowed out over the years and got less intense/wired.
Geting old generally does that too you. More specifically, you become more patient for some things and less patient for other things, but overall more mellow. Much of that comes from the confidence and assuredness as a result of greater knowledge, wisdom and life experience. The rest of it is the result of a slower neurological system and not giving a damn.

I get a kick out of Lifeforce, too. Tobe Hooper was not a bad filmmaker. He worked with what he had and made some entertaining movies even if they're not great. His fingerprints are on Poltergeist even if Spielberg's is the stronger voice, but I think Spielberg's voice comes through on everything that he is involved in.

I don't know why we can't have nuance with these things and people have to demand it be one director or another. Maybe when Spielberg took that ad out in the paper referring to their unique collaboration he was actually telling the truth to set the record straight? Maybe Hooper had a drug problem and wasn't up to his full abilities? That famous picture that looks like Spielberg is calling the shots and Hooper is looking on giddily... well, they're both there, aren't they?

Perhaps it's not psychologically mind inducing, but placing myself in this situation I would find it horrible.

And I mean, come on, if Jaws can qualify as horror then certainly Poltergeist can.

The debate over who really directed POLTERGEIST is tiresome. The facts are Hooper was hired to help realize Spielberg's vision. POLTERGEIST was Spielberg's baby...he conceived the idea, wrote it and produced it. The directorial decisions were guided by Spielberg's hand. End of story.

Director or not, POLTERGEIST is a Steven Spielberg film.

Exactly. The story and screenplay were written by Spielberg, AND he was the producer. It’s a Spielberg movie.

Y'know, I watched a bit of Poltergeist last week prodded by the current debate and came away with one irrefutable conclusion...JoBeth Williams makes for possibly the coolest (and hottest) mom in all of 80's cinema.

Barbara Hershey had it far worse in The Entity.

Even worse she had to listen to a wailing guitar heavy metal nightmare every time it happened...
