One thing to keep in mind though is TCL and HiSense use absolutely junk panels - So even with these souped up backlights they're using, be prepared for tons of banding and DSE... The recent dolby vision TCLs have had some of the worst I've ever seen.

If anything those brands should put the kibosh on the excuse of DV licensing being "too expensive".

I don't think anyone ever really bought into that excuse - I hope not anyways.

The HDR10+ evangelists sure kept harping on about it.

One of my neighbors told me his wife really wanted a "ROLED" precisely because she could make it disappear when not in use.

I'd be surprised if that sort of tech ever becomes "cheap" on the grand scale of things, but it'd be a neat option to have.

I'm looking forward to check those "ROLEDs" in the flesh (nude, unadulterated).

Now the X95G is starting to sound rather interesting. Vincent has a new video (a sort of CES wrap-up) where he talks a bit about it. Quoting the relevant part:

Quote:
And when we demoed the 75" of the XG95, or X950G, in a side-by-side comparison with a 75" Q9FN at a Sony briefing, what we found was that the black bars and blooming control looked better than the Z9F, or ZF9. And from speaking to Sony engineers, they have taken aboard our feedback and feedback from other reviewers, and improved the local dimming algorithm on the X950G to keep the top and bottom letterbox bars blacker and also to keep blooming under control. So we really do look forward to reviewing the XG95 when it hits the street.
I guess this isn't a shocking development, considering blooming is something the X900F and Z9F have both been heavily criticized for. I want to know more about this TV!

If Sony really would haven listened to the feedback regarding the Z9F, they would have dropped X-wide view altogether. Not trying to "improve" upon it.

It's a sad state of affairs for Sony LCDs in 2019, potentially compromising picture quality in favor of wider viewing angles.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they can make it work somehow, but I agree with you in the sense that it seems more like an unnecessary technological sidestep with little potential payoff. People who buy VA LCDs don't typically buy them for their great viewing angles, I think it's fair to say. The product will speak for itself in time though.

I am disappointed with what came out of CES mainly because of what I didn't see.

What I wanted to see was more HDR gaming monitors that can deliver at least 600 nits of peak brightness. Aside from Gigabyte I didn't see anything.

I was hoping Samsung would show off the successor to the CHG70 which seems to not be available anymore.

It's interesting the 75" and 85" of the X95G have X-Wide Angle while the 55" and 65" don't. I'm curious to find out how this may affect performance between the different size models.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Should be an interesting comparison then.
