Beetlejuice is also from WB but that one got Atmos. This is so lazy and unacceptable.
The DTS encoding is mainly a side step. No upgrade and no downgrade.

However, being cheap with this neo classic film is really baffling.

No reason to get the Deluxe editions? Correct? No extra disks or on disk content, not like Flash Gordon, correct?

Right, the deluxe edition just contains extra “swag” like a map and a patch.

Judging by the digital UHD version that quickly disappeared from all platforms (except FandangoNow), WB seemingly put all of their efforts into scrubbing away the film grain

From what I've read, the grain is not gone but they cleaned it up some (not sure that was required, I hate DNR and noise reduction), not that a 4K stream is going to be an indicator of what a 4K disc with vastly less compression, higher bitrate, will look like.

ugh why do they have to mess with grain so much?
it doesn't work that you can take film and make it look like video
video can have super fine detail and very subtle low contrast high-frequency detail change and look not waxy at all with no noise, film without grain just looks like smeary, waxy, crappy VHS shot video

According to the page for the single 4K release of this, it's gonna have a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, but why the hell not Atmos? Warner is giving the Beetlejuice 4K releases an Atmos track! Why crap on The Goonies, WB?? Blue Underground was able to give low budget Horror films like Maniac and Zombie Atmos tracks for their 4K releases that had a ton of punch and sounded fantastic, so why not one of the most beloved films of the 80's with a MUCH higher budget?? That is one MAJOR con for me with this release...such a shame. I hope they change the audio...

I have a hunch the 4k disc master has been completed and sitting on a shelf for some time and may not have been produced when they were quite as gung ho with Atmos remixes.

I can see that, but it's still super lazy on WB's behalf. I mean, come on. In the review for the standard Blu release, the guy said the following about the audio:

"Indeed, as I noted in my review of the UK Blu-ray release, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track is arguably the biggest reason why one would want to pick up this Blu-ray release - the gap in quality between previous R1 SDVD release of The Goonies and this Blu-ray release, with its Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, is substantial."

So why not up the ante for the 4K release countless fans have been waiting for?! Way to crap on Goonies fans with good home theater systems...

1. The 4K DCP has been being screened at theaters since at least 2019. It was most likely scanned in 2018.

2. Warner has been giving a lot of recent titles DTS-HD MA tracks and not Atmos. Scoob being a notable one.

And I see Universal is releasing the Back to the Future films in 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos. You seriously suck, WB...

Is Atmos really so much better? I have to say I've found most of the Dolby Cinema Atomos mixes sound worse to me than the IMAX ones or the regular ones in a top theater auditorium. The ones in DC tend to sound treble boosted and harsh and sometimes seem to lose impact of music in key scenes.

I don't have Atmos at home so can't comment on what the home Atmos has been like compared to other tracks.

You're watching in the wrong Atmos theater. Like any auditorium, the speaker system and calibration play a key role. Since there are no real quality standards anymore, cinema presentations can be hit or miss.

Home Atmos, when done right, can be an awesome addition. Sure, you have to set things up with some placement care and the correct speakers (and good subwoofer-age), and make sure you have at least four overheads (in-ceiling or on-ceiling), but put a little effort in and it's great.

In fact, with a well produced home Atmos mix, I tend to catch more nuance in the immersion than at the theater since the speakers are closer to the listener.

I've heard some really good Atmos mixes output on Trinnov Altitude based systems with higher speaker counts at various expos and they blow limited 12 channel IMAX mixes out of the water.

I'm debating if that swag is enough to make me keep my pre-order of the deluxe edition. This is certainly a favorite film of mine, but not sure I need to pay that much more for the swag.

My copy just arrived from Amazon despite the September 1st release date. Packaging is much smaller than I thought it would be.

Are the deleted scenes and trailer still in SD?
