I saw the 2D on a much larger (but non IMAX) screen than I did the 3D, in a showing that claims to have far more color and sound than my 2D showing did. In my case it did not help, as bigger, brighter, and louder 2D was still < 3D.
The selling point of the IMAX version is the expanded aspect ratio. Personally, I found it more satisfying than the 3D version, though ideally we could get 3D IMAX here in the US

how much money did sony make from this movie?
considering the lackluster no effort generic artwork for all the US physical releases (target, bestbuy, standard). it's kind of a given they're not gonna bother with a 3D disc.
i'm eyeing the amazon UK exclusive steelbook though, appears to be the most appealing cover. although thats not saying much

No 3D = no sale.

No pre-order, no day 1 purchase, no 4K. None of my money going to Sony. They clearly don't want it. They obviously have enough money coming in from people who don't care about 3D.

I will not reward Sony for denying home cinema enthusiasts the opportunity to recreate the theatrical 3D experience at home. They made a big deal about "premium formats" when it came to advertising the film, referring I assume to IMAX and 3D as well as 4DX. Well, if the disc releases have neither the IMAX scenes or 3D, they aren't in premium formats so how should they be described? I asked Google what was the opposite of premium and these are the results:

Cheap.
Inexpensive.
Budget.
Lousy.

That sums up Sony's disc releases of this film nicely but I prefer "inferior formats". DVD, 2K, 4K - all inferior to 3D. If I feel a compulsion to buy it, it will be used so that Sony don't get any more money for it. But even thinking about picking up the 2D Blu-ray in my hand leaves me with feelings of revulsion so I definitely won't be buying it any time soon.

RSM have already said that they can't release it so the only chance is if a 2D-only release is intolerable to the Japanese. But I'm not holding my breath, Sony seem determined to dump this film out flat everywhere just as they did with Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

RSM said they can't release Let There Be Carnage and haven't commented on No Way Home.

We are waiting to see the Asian pre-orders. No 3D in North America or Europe though, so chances are slim.

There's still a chance, which is why the thread title has TBC in it. But it's not looking hopeful.

Default Theater loaded 2D version :(

I bought tickets to this opening night in 3D and planned to see it later in Dolby Cinema but 10 minutes into the movie and after several complaints to management it was decided everyone would get free passes but would just have to watch in 3D.

I switched over to the Dolby Cinema screen (at no charge) and the presentation was great but after the first week they pulled all 3D screenings the following Sunday so this may be the first first film in the MCU I may never get to see in 3D.

I wonder if one were to rent a whole theater room to his/herself if they still have the ability to show the 3D version again? Our church rented out two showings of the The Chosen Christmas Special which an amazing crowd funded series TV series about the life of Christ. They filmed part of Season 2 here in my little town of Midlothian, TX and the director, Dallas Jenkins, is moving here and joining my church! Filming for Season 3 begins soon and I hope to be an extra or to at least spend a day on set while they are shooting. It’s an amazing game show that shows the Jesus I always pictured and have come to know.

Sorry, for shifting gears there…

Japan doesn’t show a release date yet and there is always a chance of a later release. The fans need to bombard Disney with requests.

Wasn't it like 5 grand to be an extra in that, on their crowd funding? The Chosen is fun, I wish they'd be less outlandish with their casting though, that caused a lot of discussion after the showing I saw.

Sadly Cinemark here told me no dice about doing a 3D private showing. The 3D was fun, and I enjoyed it more than seeing it in "XD" 2D, but if it helps you didn't miss out on jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring 3D.

BTW why were there so many complaints to management?

Sony Japan still haven’t announced their Venom 2 Blu-ray preorders yet so we could be waiting a long time to be put out of our misery for this title…

Yeah, I'm completely passing on buying No Way Home without 3D on one of the international releases.

My theater put it in the worst quality theater they have in 3D, with extremely dim projection that was off color, and the 3D looked nearly non-existent, and I could barley see the screen with the glasses on. They treaded the 3D in theaters like it was garbage, and I really didn't enjoy my experience watching this film. I would hope for a 3D bluray release so I can see it as it was intended in the proper 3D quality, but since that's not going to happen, I won't be buying or spending another dollar on this film, and will honestly just sit out any future films and watch at home.

Yes, it's a long long wait to find out if Sony are going to follow Marvel's example and release in Japan or just sit on their 3D versions indefinitely.

An example I have about 3d movie theaters with equipment without calibration/maintenance is EXODUS film. At the movies it was horrible. Blurry, dark, very little depth. When I got it on Blu-ray 3D what an incredible difference. Today I don't take it as a criterion for the quality of the 3D shown in the cinema when it's bad. Now if he's good, he's certainly good in BD too.

The complaints came bc we all payed to see Spider-Man: No Way Home in 3D but the projectionist screwed up and loaded the 2D format. It was already in a small theater and if I’m going to watch in 2D I ALWAYS choose Dolby Cinema or IMAX if there is no Dolby showing. So I jumped over to the Dolby Cinema, which started 30 minutes later, for a MUCH better experience. I’m disabled and my Occipital Neuralgia flared up so badly I couldn’t get out of bed for a week so by the time I felt slightly better all 3D showings were gone.

That stinks about Cinemark not doing a private 3D showing. I doubt AMC will do that either. I mostly go to AMC bc they have Dolby & IMAX and I get 4 free tickets a month and all sorts of rewards and discounts after I join their VIP Club.

Are you local? I LOVE The Chosen series!!! Dallas Jenkins (the director) has spoken at my church and is moving here to tiny Midlothian to become members at our church (Stonegate). They start filming the Sermon on the Mount soon! I believe it was $1,000 to be an extra (I donate $100/month as my tithe) but after I read more closely those “prizes” were for a single donation during the Christmas special. I’ve asked if I qualify. I just want to see a day of filming. I dont want to actually be on screen. Glad you like it! I thought the casting was perfect! No pretty, blue-eyed white person with a bunch of white disciples!

Now that there is no longer IMAX 3D I find that to be the case most of the time these days. I guess that’s why I prefer to watch them at home. The last AMAZING 3D experience I had at the theater was Alita: Battle Angel which they showed in Dolby Cinema 3D. They used special glasses that you had to sign in and out for and were charged close to $40 if you lost/broke or kept them. It ranks in my top 5 3D experiences at the the theater including: Avatar and all three Hobbit film in HFR 3D. It’s sad to think I may never wowed that way again!

I hope Avatar 2 will bring back IMAX 3D.

I also hope the potential Japanese 3D blu for Venom 2 means we get one for NWH too

I'm sorry to hear that you were laid up for a week.

Those AMC/Regal rewards programs sure do sound good, I don't know how Cinemark's rewards program, which is "Get one free ticket a month...for a monthly fee equal to the cost of one ticket", even competes. As one saving grace, they haven't yet hit me with the dreaded scenario of loading up a 2D film for a 3D showing. Here's hoping that they don't.

Sadly I'm not local to any of the sites that they've used for filming any longer. It would sure be swell if they'd let you check out the set, maybe you'd even luck out and get into a crowd scene as an extra after all.

I think folks realize that Biblically accurate casting went out with the Cecil B. DeMille days, that people see the trope with the Sons of Thunder casting over the past few decades and just roll with it (and roll their eyes), but The Chosen special casting Joseph and Mary as different races led to a discussion as they are known to be of the same race, people, and tribe. That they both should have been the same hue was the gist of the spirited discourse.

Same here, although I am not certain that IMAX here has ever shown a Hollywood film in 3D. Though that is getting into the IMAX/lieMAX discussion and that's a bit outside my ken.

While I believe it is the consensus that the 3D was not mind-blowing stuff for NWH (and I hold that the conversion crew made it far milder 3D than the director and stereographer had designed), I'll add yet another echo onto the cry for a 3D bluray because after having rewatched it "flat" it was more engaging in 3D. Hopefully this isn't pouring salt into the wound, but while don't know how much better Dolby Cinema is vs Cinemark XD, I doubt it would have changed my opinion of NWH 3D > 2D.
