![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This marks my third time seeing "Goosebumps." I watched it once when it came out and I watched it again in 2019 before I (finally) got around to watching the sequel. Something that really stood out for me each time was the fact the special effects were better than I thought they'd be. It's always a hit or miss affair with CGI no matter what the budget of the film, but here they suited the material and kept me involved in the illusion. Even the make-up effects for the ghouls in the graveyard were decent, especially for a PG-rated family film. And any movie that can make garden gnomes seem like a legitimate threat is all right in my book! Jack Black is one of the most endearing actors of his generation and playing a beloved children's author like R.L. Stine is just one more opportunity for him to prove that. Would someone please tell me, though, how Mila Kunis keeps aging in reverse? Okay, poor joke but you have to admit that Odeya Rush really does resemble the "Black Swan" actress. Ryan Lee provides ample comic relief but I thought Dylan Minnette was slightly out of his element in the lead position. Overall, this is a very fun film that moves along at a good clip, particularly once the creatures have been released from the books. I can see myself revisiting "Goosebumps" again in another few years. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I haven't watched this film in twelve years and I was very eager to see it again. I love the graveyard that opens this movie. There's something about a well-made studio cemetery that's just creepy. Ever since I saw the 1931 version of "Frankenstein" I've thought that studio-created cemeteries have an uncanny singularity that exceeds the dread one feels in even the best real life graveyards. Another attention grabber for me is the set interiors of Guy Carrell's residence - the emphasis on the brown and maroon color scheme makes the location more habitable than ones that were featured in other American International Pictures of the era. Ronald Stein's score ranks with the finest featured in AIP movies of the early sixties. Stein was a rather overlooked entrant in the profusion of cinematic composers which is a shame considering this is the man who gave us scores for works including "It Conquered the World," "Not of This Earth," "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman," "Dementia 13" and "The Haunted Palace." I'm glad Ray Milland had an opportunity to star in "The Premature Burial" as he brought something new to Roger Corman's brand of entertainment. Vincent Price is one of my all-time favorites and I cherish all the work he did for AIP but there were other actors available at the time - and Milland proved that Corman could be equally successful with someone outside of his immediate comfort zone. Milland would go on to star in Corman's "X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes" the following year which, in my opinion, would be another classic between the pair. Here Milland deliberately structured his character so every nuance, every twitch of every crease on his timeworn face, held meaning. Hazel Court is not to be outdone either, offering solid support as Milland's wife who plays concerned observer of his increasingly overwhelming phobia of a cataleptic burial. More of a gothic stage drama than a horror film, "The Premature Burial" still fascinates and sends a few chills up one's spine, making it a great watch for the Halloween season. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Almost twenty years have passed since I last saw this film and I'm not sure why I've waited so long. I'm a sucker for anything Hammer Studios released in their golden period between 1957 and 1971. I even like a few of the pieces that came in the mid to late seventies. I guess some films just fall through the cracks whether we mean them to or not. The thing that always intrigued me most about "The Plague of the Zombies" was how well-crafted director John Gilling made the film. It's one of those rarities where nothing really stands out and yet it remains a great film in spite of its commonality. The cast is uniformly good but this is more of an ensemble piece where everyone has their place in forming a whole rather than having a group of individuals jockeying for the limelight. There's an aspect of fly-on-the-wall filmmaking here insomuch that it feels like we're naturally watching events unfold rather than being subjected to a celluloid treatment in some darkened (home) theater. There are no disproportionate set pieces or unnatural sound effects - honestly, this film appears as close to reality as we were likely to get out of a sixties Hammer film. Maybe that's why I like it so much. A REALLY GOOD RONALD STEIN SCORE FOR "THE PREMATURE BURIAL:"

October 1st - Don't Mess With Texas (Tuesday)!:
Film #1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) ![]() Choosing the inaugural film(s) for this year's celebration proved to be more difficult than expected due to the unseasonably and unbearable hot weather here. Nevertheless, a hot day calls for a hot movie so The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) it was and boy was it the right decision! Apparently this film originally had its premiere in Austin, Texas on this very day 50 years ago! I swear, I did not plan this in any way so I like to imagine that the spirit of Tobe Hooper entered my subconscious and influenced my selection. Despite what the lurid title may suggest, there's actually very little on-screen bloodshed, gore, or cannibalism. Instead, this film relies more on atmosphere and tension which creates a very unique viewing experience. Although Leatherface receives most of the love and attention from audiences (and rightfully so), Jim Siedow's character of the cook Drayton Sawyer may be one of the most under-appreciated horror characters in cinema history. His macabre sense of humor delivered by his distinctive voice definitely makes him one of my favorites. A film director friend of mine once told me very nonchalantly, "The best (horror) films straddle the thin line between arthouse and grindhouse." That sentiment struck a strong nerve with me so many years ago and has remained stuck in my mind ever since. With that said, I believe The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is an excellent example of this peculiar concept. (And it's an unpretentious example that's easily accessible for average moviegoers too!) Points Of Interest include: Directed by horror hero Tobe Hooper, a rotting corpse display at a cemetery, discussions about head cheese, a handful of sexy "butt shots" (in short shorts/hot pants), room decor made of skeletal remains, hammer induced death spasms (or if you prefer the phrasing "a twitch of the death nerve"), masks made of human skin, mongoloid squealing, hanging around... on a meathook, family fun with grandpa, and a classic grindhouse style ending featuring a beautiful ballet with chainsaw (or is that chain saw? ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A gritty and gruesome low-budget masterpiece of sweaty independent '70s cinema. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Film #2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) ![]() Overall, this sequel is so tonally and visually different from the more grimy and realistic approach showcased in the original film, it may leave some viewers scratching their heads (with a flame heated wire coat hanger). It is noticeably more over the top, comedic, and even campy to a certain degree, all in a very distinctly 1980s (horror cinema) fashion. If you're wondering if this was all intentional or not, just take a look at the original movie poster which parodies the famous poster of the John Hughes' classic The Breakfast Club (1985). However, do not let this alarm or discourage you too much because this is still a horror film after all and a very enjoyable one to watch at that. Albeit for slightly different reasons here than the original but that is not necessarily a bad thing in this case. In fact, it's hard not to love this film on its own right. Fans of the classic MTV era, such as myself, will surely dig it! Points Of Interest include: Director Tobe Hooper returns for more carnage (and even has a brief cameo), a Rock 'N' Roll radio station (ZZ Top T-Shirt & The Beatles - Yesterday And Today (1966) poster duly noted ![]() ![]() ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A totally fun and striking sequel despite the obvious shift in tone, morbidly humorous and perfect for Halloween viewing parties. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's some "Thrashin' Bay Area love" for y'all "Lone Star State maniacs", courtesy of Lȧȧz Rockit! ![]() [Show spoiler]

![]() ![]() 1. The Monster Squad ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, and The Mummy invade a small town, it’s up to a group of kids, who refer to themselves as The Monster Squad, to stop them. This year I’m planning to take a lighter tone with the movies I pick and include more horror comedies. So to kick off my 31 Days of Halloween, I decided to start with this childhood favorite. It had been a few years since I last saw it, but The Monster Squad still holds up. It’s entertaining from beginning to end, has a nice atmosphere, and it’s just plain fun. |

Off I go!
Body Melt (1993) ![]() "The first phase is hallucinogenic... the second phase is glandular... and the third phase is... BODY MELT!" I kicked off the season with a gross-body horror comedy that definitely lives up to its title. It takes place in a quiet Australian neighbourhood where the residents are unknowingly test subjects for an experimental new fitness drug. It's a satire of suburban life and trends like extreme healthy living. It's 80 minutes long, and I felt every single one. Some lulls really broke up the film and made it feel much longer. It was fun though thanks to the amazing makeup effects with punch WAY above the film's budget. It has some fantastic and creative body horror scenes. I also liked the weird and disgusting The Hills Have Eyes family side story, even though it felt a little disjointed within the main plot. I've not seen many Ozploitation films, but if they are as silly and fun as this, I will need to watch more. ![]() ![]() ![]() SCARES: None really. This is a comedy. CHEESE FACTOR: Lots. Making fun of society and stupid trends people follow through some great "bad" acting and silly dialogue. KILLS & CREATIVITY: Really great. I was very impressed by the special effects, and there was a huge variety of body horror. Faces melt, penis' explode, and facehugger-like placenta attacks someone. I can't really ask for any more. The film is covered in green ooze and blood. |

I had a good start in September, getting to 24 films, goal in October is a minimum of 31. Going to be challenging with being out of town 3 weekends in a row for sporting events or a concert, but just means I gotta get creative and watch multiple movies some days.
