Intro
31 "Halloween" movies in 31 days. Can you do it???

Movies
Every time you watch one, post the name of the movie, rating and your thoughts on it. This should get everyone into the Halloween spirit and give us movie buffs ideas on movies we may not have seen. Please keep your thoughts generic and if you post spoilers, use the spoiler tags. The movies do NOT have to be on Blu-ray!

Ratings:
Abysmal, would never watch again!
Poor excuse for a horror film, but it had one or two moments of horrific joy.
Average hack 'n slash fun.
Greatness is almost achieved, lots of blood/guts/suspense.
The pinnacle of scary movies...it's one of kind. There's nothing like it!

It’s here!!!!! The thread you’ve all been waiting for. In honor of the 17th year of this thread, we are celebrating R Rated Horror! You know, the first year any of us saw any R Rated films because that’s the rules and stuff?! And let’s be honest, the best kind of horror! The poll for this year is based on a list Collider put out. Instead of picking the top 10 choices, I went with spots 11-20 as the top 10 are all the usual suspects – Halloween, Carrie, The Shining, etc…I wanted to give some other movies a chance to shine! Let's get spooky!! Here is to a great 2024 season!!!!

Let the game begin!

My plan is to focus on rewatches this year. I've noticed that I rarely ever rewatch movies and I want to fix that. Excited to revisit some classics I haven't seen in awhile!

Oh, yes. That glorious time of the year has arrived once again. College football just kicked off with the NFL kickoff not to far behind and Halloween candies, cereals and everything pumpkin spice are everywhere now plus that beautiful cool fall air is looking to make its way to my neck of the woods. It's time for a new round of horror flicks and Halloween related movies and shows along with annual staples with many new 4K releases and theatrical release.

So without further adieu, let's walk right on in.

9/10:
Zombie (1979) *Theatrical viewing*
9/12:
Speak No Evil (2024) *Theatrical viewing*
Since I've yet to see the original version, I can only critique this on its own merits and based on that, it was a pretty good flick. This is a slow burner of a horror thriller that builds up the dread and tension little by little and it's done very effectively to where it became unsettling and much of that is due to James McAvoy's awesome performance in this. I can also say that it's one of the better movies coming out of Blumhouse lately.
9/13:
HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH, EVERYONE
Friday the 13th (1980)
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
9/15:
Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1982) *First time viewing*
A mediocre Psycho-style thriller but added sleaze and filled with high levels of camp. Unhinged and over-the-top performances from Susan Tyrrell and Bo Svenson make it worthwhile to watch. Not a bad film but I wasn't impressed by it.
Night Screams (1987) *First time viewing*
While the Vinegar Syndrome 4K transfer was terrific, it's a boring and uninteresting slasher flick. The inserts in this movie was more entertaining than the movie itself.
9/21:
Killer Party (1986) *New to Blu-ray*
A hollow mess that didn't know what it wants to be. Is it an Animal House style comedy? A slasher? A demon possession flick? On top of that, it took what should've been a simple slasher plot and made it confusing somehow. The humor didn't land and the horror/suspense was dull and it moves at a snail's pace that doesn't build up to much of anything. Despite all of that, it does have its charm plus the scenes with Paul Bartel did get some laughs out of me and the weird yet rockin' opening scene that kicked off what could've been something better than what we got.
9/24:
Duel (1971) *First time viewing*
An utter masterclass in suspense and tension from Steven Spielberg in his first feature film. It's bare bones but it gets a lot mileage (no pun intended) out of its simplicity and subtlety thanks to not just to Spielberg but also to the cinematography, stunt work, sound design and Dennis Weaver's awesome performance. As made-for-TV movies go, this has to be among the all time greats.
9/29:
Berserk! (1967)
Joan Crawford's second proto-slasher isn't half bad. A solid yet flawed murder mystery but it's uneven in its execution with much of its runtime consisting of circus footage filler unrelated to the plot and an out of place musical sequence.
The Great Alligator (1979) *New to 4K UHD Blu-ray*
Laughable bad special effects, a solid cast and another neat score from Stelvio Cipriani wasn't enough to make this really lame, stupid and dreary Jaws knockoff/Cannibal Holocaust wannabe.
Julie Darling (1983) *First time viewing*
Despite some flawed areas, this is a solid and entertaining exploitation horror/thriller. Like The Bad Seed but more of a dark, sinister and sleazy flavor.
10/1:
*Halloween staple*
Don't Go In The Woods (1981)
10/2:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) *Theatrical viewing*
It was awesome to finally get to see this on the big screen. The restoration and new sound mix were awesome and the movie still holds up after all these years. A true horror classic.
10/3:
The Legend of Hell House (1973)
10/4:
Alien (1979)
10/5:
RANDOM ZOMBIE DOUBLE FEATURE
Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror (1981) *New to 4K UHD DOLBY VISION*
Not just one of the worst zombie movies ever made but also one of the most WTF and unintentionally laughable movies ever made. A real hoot.
Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006) *First time viewing*
An enjoyable reimagining of George Romero's original with a dash of meta added. Many aspects are so-so but it doesn't feel like a total rehash plus the 3D is solid and Sid Haig brings some extra pep whenever he's on screen. It feels like any average low budget indie horror flick but some fun can be had with this.
10/6:
*Halloween staples*
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
10/7:
*Halloween staple*
Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985)
10/8:
A Disney Halloween (1981) A decent but enjoyable compilation special with some segments that doesn't feel like it fits into the Halloween vibe.
10/9:
Witch's Night Out (1978)
10/10:
*Halloween staple*
Stagefright (1987)
10/11:
The Hills Have Eyes (1977) *First time viewing*
Reminiscent of Tobe Hooper's original Texas Chainsaw Massacre in its grittiness, brutality and disturbing nature and one of Wes Craven's best films.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Also reminiscent of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A very effective and truly unsettling modern Ozploitation horror thriller with one of horror cinema's most memorable and scariest villain.
10/12:
The Brotherhood of Satan (1971) *First time viewing*
The atmosphere is there and has some genuine creepy moments plus the premise is an interesting one (I think this was Jordan Peele's inspiration for Get Out.) but fails in the execution resulting in a nonsensical, stupid and dull movie.
The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964) A solid and entertaining Hammer Mummy film.
10/13:
The Prey (1983) *Revisit*
I remember not liking this when I watched the old Thorn EMI video. With the recent Arrow Blu-ray release, I thought give it another shot and the movie's actually decent. It's basically another slow burn slasher with lots of wildlife filler but manages not to be boring to sit through, especially in the third act and it's somewhat effective overall plus the 2K restoration looks incredible and that you can actually see what's going on.
Warning Sign (1985)
It's basically the first Resident Evil movie in the heartland but it's also an highly underrated gem. Very engaging and thrilling. A well done mix of drama and horror with an excellent cast who all give great performances with many playing against type. It's not often you see Sam Waterston or Kathleen Quinlan as action heroes or in roles like this in general. Definitely worth checking out.
10/14:
*Halloween staples*
The Evil Dead (1981)
Evil Dead II (1987)
10/15:
*Halloween staple*
John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
10/16:
Smile (2022) *First time viewing*
Awesome cinematography, impressive sound design, some good direction and a strong atmosphere along with some tense moments that delivers some solid chills isn't enough to elevate what feels like a clone of The Ring and after an intense opening, it was just became repetitive, uninteresting, predictable and utterly boring.
10/17:
Terrifier 3 (2024) *Theatrical viewing*
An awesome entry in what's shaping up to be epic horror franchise. This kills in this are utterly insane, more so than the first two with one that made my jaw drop and being set at Christmas was a bonus and I loved it.
10/18:
*Halloween staple*
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) *New to 4K UHD Blu-ray*
The new 4K transfer looks really good but didn't really notice any difference between the theatrical cut and this new uncut (which I didn't know even existed) version.
10/19:
*Halloween staple*
Shock Waves (1977)
10/20:
*Annual Rob Zombie/Firefly triple feature*
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
The Devil's Rejects (2005)
3 From Hell (2019)
PLUS
*Returning Halloween staple*
Saw (2004)
I wasn't able to make it to the 20th Anniversary screening last night due to a last minute job commitment so I watched my 4K Blu and the movie still holds up after all these years.
10/21:
The Shining (1980)
10/22:
*Halloween staples*
Curtains (1983)
The Video Dead (1987)
10/23:
*Halloween staple*
Hey Arnold!: Season 2, Episode 7 "Arnold's Halloween" (1997)
10/24:
Deadtime Stories (1986) *First time viewing*
The idea of a horror anthology telling twisted versions of classic fairy tails is an interesting one but this was pretty bad across the board with the stories starting from dull to cartoonishly absurd (The Goldilocks segment got some legit laughs from me.) It did have some inspired spots that had potential to be something if it were better executed plus it had some solid special effects and fun soundtrack. I think this is more noteworthy for being early work from future Academy Award winning actress Melissa Leo.
10/25 & 10:26:
TWO NIGHTS OF UNIVERSAL MONSTERS in 4K
Dracula (1931)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Frankenstein (1931)
Bride of Frankenstein
The Wolf Man (1941)
10/27:
The Exorcist (1973)
*Halloween staple*
Madman (1982)
*Halloween staple*
The Funhouse (1981)
Late Night With The Devil (2024)
I absolutely love this film. A story of the pursuit of fame and success and its high price. One of the best uses of the found footage format. I love how it builds up genuine tension and suspense as you watch it all unfold and it's one of the few modern horror films that'll get under your skin. The 70s retro look and feel is strong here thanks to some really good set and costume design. The performances were awesome across the board especially the lead actor.
Not just the best horror film so far this year but the best film so far this year, period.
10/28:
*Two Halloween staples*
The Boogens (1981)
The Phantom of the Opera (1989)
10/29:
The Mad Magician 3D (1953)
Not quite on the level of Vincent Price's previous 3D flick, House of Wax or one of his strongest, House of Wax but it's still manages to be a fun time killer with some good 3D.
10/30:
*Halloween staple*
Terror Train (1980)
Howling II (1985) *New to 4K UltraHD*
Such a fun and weirdly insane movie to watch and the 4K restoration job Vinegar Syndrome did on this was awesome.
10/31:
Boo! (1980) *First time viewing*
Found this on YouTube. A comedy variety show with monsters. It's on level of The Star Wars Holiday Special and the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. That should tell you everything you need to know.
Night of the Demons (1988)
The WNUF Halloween Special (2013) *First time viewing*
This was recommended to me after Late Night with the Devil. I love the dedication to realism and authenticity to make this look like a local TV channel from the late 80s down to the TV commercials but the film as a whole didn't gel together very well. The horror aspect was the strongest where it did build some legit tension and dread was undone by unsuccessful attempts at humor and pacing to where it felt more like it was padding the runtime all before falling apart in the third act. The effort was there but wished the execution was better.
*Halloween staple*
Halloween (1978)

1. Shaun of the Dead

Biggest disappointment of my movie year, we didn't get the 20th anniversary re-release here. Starting off this years festivities with yet another viewing at home, alone. le sigh...

The Bigfoot Trap

Starting out with a lightweight; more thriller than horror, but plenty of entertainment from this low budget schlocker.

Oh what a feeling to see the thread is up and running again! It had to be a vote for The Thing of course, and I see most felt the same.

I know a lot of folks get started now, but it's one more month of curating/planning/buying movies and decorations for me, so I'm really looking forward to cherry-picking some recommendations from you guys. Have fun and Happy Halloween!

When Evil Lurks (2023)

Not what you're asking for specifically, but it's fresh on my mind because I just watched it on Joe Bob's Nightmareathon. Blew me away! Excellent film! One of the best I've seen in quite a while actually.
