The specular highlights look blown out. There's some major color banding going on during the island entrance sequence at about 45-minutes in. The wide colour gamut feels overbaked. And the faces, at times, feel as though they almost have a slight magenta 'push' to them.

This is probably the first UHD disc, of the 40 I now own, that I am just not feeling as far as the video quality goes.
This was the first movie I watched on our new LG and I felt the same. I thought something was wrong with it and I put in another movie.

I think it gets better as it gets further along, but as far as PQ goes, it's not a favorite.

Sampled it on my LG OLED, and I pretty much agree. I put it in expecting a revelation based on reviews here, and thought it looked a bit off. Will need to sit down and watch the whole thing.

I recently blind bought Kong: Skull Island which I enjoyed should I have watched this one first before skull island or wouldn't it have mattered?

Not really. Only that there were a few "nods" to this film, and the '33 Kong, in Skull Island.
Skull Island Kong will eventually
[Show spoiler]meet up with Godzilla('14) and other monsters in upcoming films.

I watched it last night and want to change what i said inititally. its not as great as I thought it inititally was. its amazing how a 100% dark room changes the picture quality.

its still amazing in some parts and overall is very very good, the fire at night looks so damn good and the scene in the rain where the villagers attack them looks stunning but the contrast seems to be jacked up in certain scenes and just looks a bit weird. its a bit inconsistant

The contrast is definitely intense, especially early on. I think everyone agrees on that. I still think it looks awesome 90% of the time.

My only disappointment, a quibble actually, is that I found the LFE lacking. The immersive effects were well done and the surround speakers were used effectively too, but the low frequencies were few and far between.
I posted the foregoing a couple of weeks ago but decided to watch the film again As noted, I bought the King Kong (2005) UHD HDR DTS:X MA disk a couple of weeks ago. I watched it then and was left with a couple of impressions, discussed above, which I wanted to confirm or dispel by watching it again. Today, I did watch it again and had my earlier impressions confirmed:

1. The UHD HDR treatment was a bit uneven but in the film's final act, starting at about the 2 hour 30 minute mark, the scenes of the snowy 1932 version of the NYC theater district and those of Kong and Ann atop the Empire State Building, with the sun coming up over the East River while Kong is attacked by Army Air Corps biplanes, were simply spectacular. I haven't seen better HDR than that anywhere.

2. The film's Oscar winning sound design had been lovingly transferred from DTS-HD MA 5.1 to DTS:X MA to great effect. Its immersive nature and wonderful surround effects could not have been better. My only quibble remains that the film's LFE, while not completely lacking, fell a little short by modern standards, at least to my ears. CAVEAT: Consider the source on this. I love LFE that I can feel hitting my chest and making my room shake. The King Kong soundtrack didn't give me that, or at least not enough of it.

i watched it last night and agree about the sound. its simply amazing! the last scene where kong is at the top of the building fighting off the planes, wow, it sounds incredibe all the planes panning around the room. i thought the LFE was pretty good for kong but yeh its not as good as movies today for sure. apart from that. the audio design was fantastic and i loved the whole experience.

Well, after a bunch of trial and error, help from other forum members and way too much "Maximum Effort" I was able to finally get this %$*@*^$ DC (redeemed via Flixster) to play in UHD HDR10 by installing the FandangoNow app into the Roku Ultra and linking my UV library to it(I think for the 3rd time) .[IMG][/IMG]

All other attemps resulted in a 1080 playback only, even running the FandangoNow app from the iPhone thru the built in Chromecast failed.

But after all that, SUCCESS!
[IMG][/IMG]

Now, on to Deadpool!

By the way, contacting UV about any issues like this will get this canned response, so don't bother

"Hello,
Regrettably, these titles do not come with a digital UHD version. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Finally got around to watching this last night and was wondering if this is worth the upgrade? I didn't pick up the BD, but rented it from Netflix. Love the homage to the original film and a little more character development compared to it and the 76 version.

Watched the first half last night in SDR. Even there the contrast is intense especially early on and gave me the ability to reduce the SDR conversion slider to -4 on the UB900 to get a little more highlight detail and less brightness. Pretty solid PQ overall - need to compare it to the BD for giggles as it's been a while.

Remember that the Panasonic is actually doing a tone map so you still have to look at clipping levels with UHD patterns. You need to go down to nearly -6 on the slider to not clip on most material. With a X500 JVC projector I think you'd be better off loading a custom gamma curve than doing that conversion.

I've got Chad B coming out in the next month or so. Can custom gamma curves be loaded like the RS400+ series? Good to hear if so.

Has anyone else had any issues with the chapter selection on the disc menu? This is the only Universal disc I've seen this issue. Essentially the disc completely freezes everytime chapters is selected either from the main menu or the pop up. Using an Xbox One S. Trying to determine if the disc is perhaps faulty.

I got around to watching this last night and agree with others have said, it looks good with some nice details that you cant see as well on the blu ray. The dts x sounded pretty good to me as well but i did not check if i could start from a chapter, i will check later today to see if my oppo 203 has this problem.

Since you have the same TV as me, I was wondering what your contrast settings are in both SDR and HDR?

HDR kicks in on the Sony 940D when it detects HDR input. I leave everything alone when I am watching HDR images. I think they look great. I use the 940D Settings AustinJerry has recommended at AVS Forum. I would recommend that you use them too.

I've seen them but after playing around with the S&M test patterns myself, I think contrast at 90 clips too much.

Therefore for 2D SDR I use Cinema Pro with contrast at 70, backlight at 15 and gamma at -2.

Jerry hasn't done HDR calibration (yet), I have contrast at 92 and gamma at 0 myself. Default contrast in HDR is maxed out but I'm not sure if that's the way to go. Everything's blown out that way when looking at the Sony nit ramp test pattern.
