If Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't get a Academy Award Nom for Best Adapted Screenplay, I think I will go nuts. Easily the best film of the year so far.

Why don't you get off the "hipster" bandwagon!! You just like it because it's the thing to do.

Despite the fact that you liked it before there was any buzz and before the official release date.

Just came back from a screening and absolutely loved it! It's my favorite MCU movie (so far). Now, where I can find that Star-Lord mask...

That's wishful thinking.

Then, the one time I believe Marvel actually releases a genuine classic, a film that lives up to the usual Marvel hype and is probably the best film they have done that NOW people start complaining about the usual Marvel hype machine.

Where the hell were you guys when people were calling Winter Soldier "the best film of the year" despite having exactly the same issues as the much derided Amazing Spider-Man 2?
As of right now, I prefer Phase 1 to Phase 2. Yes, each has their flaws, but Phase 1 got more right than wrong compared to Phase 2. While I think ideas declined a bit between 2008's releases up to The Avengers, Phase 2 just seems to be about big events and setting up Thanos for Phase 3. Iron Man 3 is anti-climactic with Tony Stark essentially hanging up what actually makes him, well, him. Thor: The Dark World was to set up the Infinity Stones and get Loki on the throne again. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was pretty S.H.I.E.L.D the movie revolving around Steve Rogers and friends, as well s to take S.H.I.E.L.D out of the picture for Age of Ultron. It's unfortunately all just becoming borderline soulless block building for the next things to come. Phase 1 for the most part doesn't give off that vibe. Maybe after viewing Phase 2 as a whole then watching Guardians last - it might all work out. For now, I really hope they're inspired by the qualities of Iron Man 1, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers, and to an extent The Winter Soldier.

I enjoyed the movie but it felt funny or rushed. I felt like The Avengers had the far better pacing. I felt like Thor 2 and Cap 2 had smooth pacing as well. This movies pacing I felt like I was kinda on the scrambler at the fair.

This is the scrambler.
[Show spoiler]

I felt like the Director or his people above him made this movie and it should have been longer to develop the characters and scenes. I felt like James Gunn was like a mad carnie and just pulling the throttle slow to fast like a mad man throughout the movie. If that makes sense.

Glad to see GotG it was really good everyone should see it but I felt the pacing was glitchy. Not bad just different than what I was used to by TA, T2, and C2. If that makes sense.

I really hope the Blu-Ray has an extended directors cut like Watchmen later had. I even remember seeing articles where Gunn was saying he had to leave some good scenes out, and I think the upper ups got on his ass about time constraints or something cause it feels slightly off beat or rushed...oh I'm so redundant!
I felt what you're referring to. I sort of touched upon it in my posts a few pages back. The pacing felt like "Okay, here are your heroes.", "No, wait, haha, here's where our story really begins," "Oh, I'm sorry... Everything should click right about now. Yeah." Next thing we know it's the final battle and the end of the movie! And what's stranger, is that it feels like they approached it as if we already know these characters, like a sequel. It's only a sequel in a sense to 2 mid-credit scenes, and being a slight spin-off from the event to The Avengers from Thanos' perspective.

Guardians was working from scratch, with a bunch of characters unknown to a mass audience, in a completely alien world. It had to achieve more than the entire two Phases of Marvel in a single film.
You just gave the perfect reason why it should've been 20-30 minutes longer. There are just as many characters as in The Avengers! Meaning it should've been just as long. Furthermore, The Avengers first 20 minutes sets-up each character except Thor, like they did with Drax in Guardians. So, whether or not others had seen the rest of Phase 1, some, or none, you didn't have to worry about it going in. So, ty for your cooperation in providing that point.

I still haven't seen the Iron Man 1 and 2, only half of part 3 which I never finished it yet. Only just watched Cap 2 a week or 2 ago, dunno what happened in part 1 not really my thing. After The Avengers I also watched Thor 2. Still haven't seen Edward Norton in Hulk, and don't care to, for that matter.

I see where your opinion is coming from though. Only saw Thor before Avengers though, which was enough character development for me personally.
Well, as far as your experience goes - all you really needed was to see Thor to see where Thor & Loki came from. Thor leads right into The Avengers. As does The First Avenger's book ends. Iron Man 1 & 2 set-up Tony Stark, S.H.I.E.L.D & the Avenger Initiative. While the Incredible Hulk serves as a really great movie, but because of of newer drafts of The Avengers, adds nothing really but character development for Bruce Banner. So, if anyone else went into The Avengers with having only seen Thor - they were good to go, honestly.

But, really though, take the time to watch the rest!

I'll be honest with you, I really don't remember Phase One all that well. Other than Thor which I have revisted many times as I really, really like that film. I might have to ask for Phase One on Bluray for my Birthday or something.

The first half of Avengers, where the team were trying to iron out their clashing egos, is actually the only part of the film I enjoy. I'd have happily had the film end with Cap, Iron Man and Thor throwing it down which is still the height of the film for me. The banter between the team is really where Whedon's style shone, I just wish he let someone else take over from him in the action scenes. You can really tell he's mostly used to TV work.

Speaking of Guardians, it should - and could have - been longer, I think they did mostly fine with what they had but I do also hope for an extended cut which can smooth things out and hopefully give everyone a bit more to do, with more individual stand out moments. However for whatever reason these days any film over 90 minutes seems to be automatically regarded as "bloated". People have already complained Guardians has ran too long, when in reality I don't think two hours was enough.

Comic book movies dont even get nominated for best costume design. Whats the chance they'll get nominated for their screenplay?

And people still take the Academy seriously

It wasn't a mask, he pressed a button on his earpiece and it digitized over his face. That was cool as hell.

I kind of wish it had the actual helmet portion from the comics, but it was still awesome.

I still find it amusing that people are going "Howard the Duck?! That is stupid!" as the tears are still drying on their cheeks from crying over a dead tree and his talking raccoon friend.

Gunn was just reminding people how we all react to bizarre stuff in mainstream films - this movie was taking a chance - had it not had a slew of successful Marvel films before it, this film could have flopped. Same reason Hellboy did well too because people had already expected comic book films to be decent again. Had Howard the Duck movie been released after a bunch of awesome comic book films (aka quality of the first two Donner Superman films), then maybe people would have been ready for a fun, bizarre hero like Howard the Duck.

Howard the Duck had all the great characteristics of its 1980s era to be successful - witty funny dialogue, Lucas and Tippett, amazing animatronics, the fun spirit of most 1980s adventure comedies, important roles for little people, and Leah Thompson (who would have been perfect had she been cast in a Jem film made in the 1980s). Just like many of the other charming fantasy films of the 1980s, Howard the Duck has aged well.

I always thought that Blade was the first good Marvel film, but I now realize it was Howard the Duck - and it seems obvious that Gunn respects the film as well.

I love Guardians and it is the best film of the year so far but I cant imagine it winning any awards - they'll probably give best special effects to crap like Transformers 4. Maybe it has a chance for the MTV movie awards.
