Don't understand all the love for this. Movie looked great but the story and characters (enemies in particular) we're very blah, predictable, and uninteresting. A few laughs but too much was forced. Very forgettable.

To me Ronan was the best villain so far in the Marvel Universe and it's really not even close. Quite a few laughs from me, even after already seeing it 7 times.

I'll give you that, but that's not saying much. Don't know why the enemies are so blah. Only one I really loved was Jeff bridges in iron man.

I somewhat agree. In terms of plot and character, this movie was rather standard and void of any surprise. I did enjoy the movie with its eye candy and its humor, so I wouldn't call it completely forgettable... but it's ultimately very predictable. Marvel movies have become very generic, story wise.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Is Once Again The #1 Film At The U.S. Box Office

An unusual thing happened on Monday at the U.S. box office. After being out of the top spot at the U.S. box office for the last 10 days, Guardians of the Galaxy moved back into the #1 position on its eighteenth day of release.

On Monday, Guardians of the Galaxy knocked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles out of first place and finished atop the U.S. box office with a gross of $2.884 million. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finished in second place with a gross of $2.801 million. Let’s Be Cops took third place with $2.103 million, and The Expendables 3 took fourth place with $1.320 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s return to the top demonstrates exactly how strong word of mouth is for the film and how many fans are returning for multiple viewings. With its current pace, Guardians of the Galaxy should pass Transformers: Age of Extinction sometime in the next week to become the highest grossing summer movie of the year. Guardians of the Galaxy also has a good chance at passing The Lego Movie and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to become the highest grossing film of 2014 so far.

Not bad for a film that many were predicting would be Marvel Studios first big flop.

I still don't understand the constant complaining about Ronan. The film is called "Guardians of the Galaxy" not "Guardians and Ronan fun time two hours", what I mean by this is they had two hours to introduce five heroes who are basically unheard of to mass audiences, while also introducing an entire universe and explaining how that universe works. They had to do so much more in this one movie than Marvel has done in an entire phase so with that in mind Ronan's "I'm sort of like a member of the space KKK and I have a really big hammer, grr" thing was enough, we knew why he was evil without it taking away precious time from the stuff that mattered, Ronan was never going to be in the next movie anyway so he was the least important thing in it.

Too many superhero films are about the villain, and then the villain dies at the end and I'm left wondering what the point of it all was as I still know jack shit about the hero, and the character I have come to understand wont even be in the next movie.

Even more than that though, Ronan left more of an impression on me than Loki did even with his limited screentime. It seems the MCU decided that since Loki will basically turn up in every movie, they never really need to rush to have him do things, so it's mostly just involved Hiddleston overacting and not doing a whole lot else.

It's definitely going to make it past Cap and Lego for highest of 2014 (highest for now until Mockingjay and Hobbit show up of course).

Would be great if it can maintain small enough drops to be the first non-Iron Man or Spider-Man featuring Marvel film to hit $300M but that'll be tough.

Same here. Yes, Ronan was a bit thin, but I actually found it refreshing that he was a thin villain.

Some bad guys are just bullies, and that's what Ronan is - a bully with a bad ass look, a big ass hammer, and a long trail of evil deeds.

Ronan had some justification for his crimes though - he thought the Xandarians had committed atrocities against his family and he wanted revenge. Also he wanted to kill Thanos because he was tired of being ordered around by others.

I guess people needed to see a few scenes of Ronan's origin to say that he was a deeper character.

Transformers -59%
Godzilla -66%
Maleficent -68%
Divergent -70%
CA TWS -73%
ASM 2 -77%
Lego -80%

GotG's 54% drop off was fantastic
Where did you get those numbers? Because they all seem off... Even the most front-loaded movies almost never drop more than 70%... And I'd say it's pretty much impossible for a popular family film like LEGO to drop 80% in its second weekend....

Indeed GOTG's drop is fantastic, especially when you consider it burned off significant demand during the week due to inflated summer weekdays. However, several tentpole movies from this year have had similar or better first to second weekend drops.

For movies that crossed the $200M mark, the second weekend drops are as follows (according to studio reported numbers as listed on Box Office Mojo and other box office sites):

LEGO -27.8%
Apes -50.1%
Maleficent -50.6%
GOTG -55.3%
Captain America -56.6%
Spider-Man - 61.2%
X-Men -64.2%
Godzilla -66.8%

EDIT: Oh, okay. I think the numbers you listed are the first Sunday to Monday drops. In which case, the GOTG number is still impressive, but can really only compared to other mid-summer releases. 70 to 80% drops are standard when school/work is in session.

I don't know where you got your figures from but these are the drops from the first to second week domestic weekends according to Box Office Mojo (using your same list of tentpole releases)
  1. The LEGO Movie - 27.8% ($69,050,279 to $49,846,430)
  2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 50.1% ($72,611,427 to $36,254,310)
  3. Maleficent - 50.6% ($69,431,298 to $34,328,264)
  4. Divergent - 53.1% ($54,607,747 to $25,619,578)
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy- 55.3% ($94,320,883 to $42,124,922)
  6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 56.6% ($95,023,721 to $41,274,861)
  7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 61.2% ($91,608,337 to $35,501,212)
  8. Transformers: Age of Extinction - 63% ($100,038,390 to $37,050,185)
  9. Godzilla - 66.8% ($93,188,384 to $30,946,416)

Guardians is doing fantastic as you say - and rightfully so - but it's not the best in terms of drops which still stands with The LEGO Movie's astounding 27.8% drop (that's what made me check your figures - I remember there being no way that it dropped 80%).

EDIT: Celticmoon beat me to it

yep it was a conversation about the drop-off from sunday to Monday, duh. I totally screwed that up. We were talking about gotg strong first monday.

SO GotG had @92 mil opening weekend and 42 mill for the 2nd that's a -54% drop.

It's from Box office mojo.com

I WAS WRONG ON THE LEGO MOVIE DROP-OFF! THANKS FOR POINTING IT OUT. IT DID HAVE THE SMALLEST DROP. THE OTHER NUMBERS ARE CORRECT
EDIT - nothing to see! Bolty edited his post so mine was just saying what he'd already said

Either way, Guardians is doing brilliantly and deserves all this success and more. I hope those who said it would fail and be Marvel's first flop and their Snakes on a Plane (in terms of internet hype > audience interest) have admitted they were wrong.

I liked Ronan as a villain. And I think Lee Pace did a good job. But it's the same with most of these marvel villains. Very little back story and usually 1 or 2 lines of dialogue explaining their motivation to destroy whatever. I just think a major character of Marvel Comics like that deserves a little more (Not too much that it would overshadow the main team).

But he did fare better than Malekith. What they did with him in The Dark World was such a waste.

I hope you guys know that most of the marvel villains are probably still alive. I mean we don't know if Malekith or Ronan are actually dead. Why would marvel waste all the epic bad guy scenes on their very first appearances? Like comics the bad guys will always want vengeance and then we will truly see the fireworks. IMO.

I honestly don't know. I suppose we should assume that Red Skull is still alive, and Hugo Weaving is contracted for another film I think. We just don't know where he is. Malekith could have survived, but Marvel may not even want to bring him back as a villain. But I would definitely like to see Ronan again.

Anyone can play red skull since he wears a mask all the time. Ronan already demonstrated earlier that he can control the powers of the gem, I think he's just fine.
