I don't care about directors and prefer to go with the better movie....regardless of how much the director is a douchebag, he's a douchebag who created one of my childhood classics and then ruined it with another 3 movies....

I rank them like this

Star Wars Original Trilogy
....
...
..
.
LOTR Trilogy - I finally watched this trilogy and fell asleep during every single movie...and it wasn't even the extended cut..
...
..
Star Wars New Trilogy or whatever it's called...it's crap imo (this means in my opinion for those who want to argue opinion like it's a fact)

This thread is about the set including the latest editions of the Complete Saga (1-6). I don´t know why the OOT keeps coming up.

The main group in this thread should be peope whose main connection to Star Wars is that they like these 6 movies the way they are, not people whose main connection to Star Wars is that they hate 3 of them and don´t like the other 3. I´m not going into a Avatar or Aliens thread constantly writing how I don´t like it.
Ok one last time. What part of a generation of us only consider Star Wars, ESB and RoTJ as the only trilogy that exists. Not sure what part of that is so hard to understand.

Yeah... he released the original trilogy in 2004. how does he dare to put them out again in 2011 on a new format with new specials.

if you were involved in any way in releasing those LOTR discs I really didn´t mean to offend you. I have nothing agains Peter Jackson or LOTR, don´t get me wrong... there are no mummies here as far as I can tell.

I doubt any side is going to convince the other of anything. Each firmly holds their beliefs, and that's not likely to change.

Well no, they arent outdated - but I think the way lots of poeple feel regarding SW is that MOST(not all) of the updates and enhancements made to the OT via the 1997 release on DVD are welcomed changes. Cleaning up effects shots, tinkering here and there with some scenes to better align them with the PT is NOT destroying anyones childhood or the original intent of the films. Sure - Han shoots first, Im with ya there and I hate the change. There are a few other scenes that arent good additions but overall, I dont see having the unaltered OT such a big deal.

The battle for Yavin is WAY better in the new versions. Some of the added CGI elements at least give the OT a more modern look and feel and thats important, IMO.

Could they have included the purely original OT with this set? Yeah - but not everyone wants that and if it was gonna add a lot to the cost than that would have pissed off several buyers. Im a huge SW nut but I can live without the untouched OT - I dont get why more people cant? Oh well.

This is film, not Microsoft Windows. We don't need a new beta release every year.
Why do they even like the OT? I am begining to think they dont, or they only have to because they love those crappy Prequels. If they could I am sure they would want to reboot 4-6 so it would match the first three. Hey Im all for that just give me the UOT in HD and then I could personally care less what he does.

I certainly dont fall into that category! ANH is my favorite film ever and always will be. That doesnt mean that I cant deal with some changes to the scenery or a few improved effects shots. Just because some of the true SW fans are a little less agitated with *some* of the changes doesnt make us unworthy SW fans! No way! There is no constitutional amendment requiring true SW fans to hate the prequels and only like the untouched originals.

As for the PT - Im well aware of the issues that the PT has but as an SW fan they are "what Ive got" so relish the best parts of them and deal with the worst parts of them.

Great post. I am one of the few who prefers the special editions over the originals. Whenever I watch the originals I just can't help but feel they are unfinished.

IMO, the only real offensive change is Greedo shooting first. I also prefer the original music from Jabba's palace also.

You nailed it! All of the back and forth never solves anything because when it comes to SW you can't change someone else's mind.

The only reason you feel that way is because of the changes he did make and because he made the PT 16 years after the last one. After almost 20 years between trilogies you shold have just had a reboot. I can assure you that nobody in the theater or watching these films before 1997 thought they were "unfinished". Did you think Jaws was unfinsihed? E.T.?, Raiders of the Lost Ark? ...blah blah blah...

I thought they were great before. There are a few good alterations (Emperor in ESB!) but, for the most part, they were unnecessary and now stick out like a sore thumb.

And before anyone calls this "double standard", I'd rather have no alterations at all. But you should be able to tell between a bad one (Han looking weird as hell while "dodging" Greedo's laser) and a good one (the aforementioned).

Reboots weren't 'in vogue' until the mid 2000s. I think Batman Begins was the first film considered an actual reboot? Not sure though. A reboot would have been met with even more vitriol than the PT I think. Could you imagine the circus that would be right about now? LOL, and here I thought it was bad enough with AOT, PT vs OT... WOW! "Hell has come to frog town..."

I agree with you though, anyone who thinks the OT is 'unfinished' is either too young to remember seeing them as a kid or is drinking the Lucas Kool-Aid. They were finished films until 1997. Oh well.

could be a long wait.

i have a suggestion - we already know that the original versions are not coming out in this release. we already know that there will be some alterations even beyond what we saw on dvd(Yoda in episode 1 for example). these are facts. CAN WE STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT ALREADY?!! almost 800 pages, thousand upon thousands of replies and every page has "i want the original version/these are going to suck if they are not the original version/this trilogy is better than that trilogy". we hear you, we agree with you but it isn't going to change things. ever hear the definition of insanity? repeating the same action over and over expecting a different outcome. stop the insanity and let's keep focused here.

anyone been watching the star wars movies on tv lately? reason i ask is because shortly after the original trilogy was released on dvd, CBC was showing them here in Canada(i think it was during the hockey strike). they were showing the brand new, dvd version - not the special edition versions - and it was within a few months of the dvd release. I am wondering if the "new" bluray versions have made their way on to tv already. anybody notice anything different in them?

Thats exactly how I feel. After watching the special editions, its hard for me to go back and watch the originals. They simply feel incomplete and unfinished. The other films you mentioned don't have alternate versions.

I would love for the originals to be made available for historical reasons, but I know I would never watch them.

Again, Greedo shooting first is the only change I HATE. I still haven't decided how I feel about Hayden Christensen at the end of RotJ.

Do you think most people, not Star Wars fans, are even aware of the different versions? I got a feeling they are not.

They may or may not be aware, but they don't particularly care one way or the other.

The unaltered OT version will never see the light of day. Never. The Special Editions are the OFFICIAL editions. Deal with it.

5 years ago, everyone would have said that about the Donner cut of Superman II.

10 years ago, everyone would have said that about the "Alan Smithee" version of Dune.

15 years ago, everyone would have said that about Heavy Metal.

Never is a very long time.
