Default Ophelia Lovibond joins Cast

Quote:
Ophelia Lovibond has nabbed a supporting role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Galaxy is part of Marvel’s phase two of its superhero film slate and is directed by James Gunn.

The project is a space-set adventure movie and sees Chris Pratt playing Star Lord, who leads a group that includes Zoe Saldana (as a green-skinned assassin named Gamora) and WWE star Dave Bautista (as Drax the Destroyer).

Earlier this week, Michael Rooker joined the cast as a bow-and-arrow-loving alien named Yondu.

Details of Lovibond’s role are being kept in the farther reaches of deep space, home of Marvel's security bunker.

A June production start date is being readied, and Disney has set an Aug. 1, 2014, release date.

Lovibond is a British actress whose credits include movies such as 4.3.2.1. and Nowhere Boy and the TV series Titanic: Blood and Steel. She has appeared stateside in the Jim Carrey comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins and No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

Default EXCLUSIVE: Lee Pace in Final Negotiations to Play Villain

Quote:
Lee Pace ("The Hobbit") is in final negotiations to play the villain in Disney and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy," an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

The identity of Pace's villainous character is being kept under wraps.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" finds Quill leading a group of alien superheroes as they protect the solar system from an evil alien race.

The cast currently features Chris Pratt as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, WWE star Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Michael Rooker as Yondu. Ophelia Lovibond will also co-star in an unknown supporting role.

Production will start in June and Disney will release the film on Aug. 1, 2014.

Last November, Pace was mentioned as one of several actors being considered to play hero Peter Quill, aka Star Lord. Pratt ultimately won that role but Marvel was impressed with Pace's audition and kept him in mind when it came time to cast the villain.

Pace, who recently worked with Steven Spielberg on "Lincoln" and had a supporting role in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," plays Thranduil in Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" trilogy.

On the small screen, he starred in Bryan Fuller's acclaimed series "Pushing Daisies" and "Wonderfalls," and will soon be seen as the lead in AMC's pilot "Halt & Catch Fire," which co-stars Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis.

I think that is because when Ophelia Lovibond was cast in a supporting role, someone misreported that the Hollywood Reporter article (which was the first to break the news) said she would play an "aide" to the Collector, but most likely his daughter Carina.

But there was nothing like that in the article. So I'm calling BS right now.

I have only read a few issues of Guardians of the Galaxy a few years ago during the whole secret invasion in the Marvel comics. I did not keep reading but I really liked what I read and am very excited about this movie because it seems like it is going to be so different from all of the rest of the superhero movies.

The Pie Maker!!! Yes! Love Lee Pace. Awesome in Pushing Daisies, The Fall, and Lincoln. Kind of wasted his talent in The Hobbit, but I'm sure that won't happen again. This keeps getting better and better.

I picked up a few of the graphic novels from the library and if anything they have dulled my interest in the movie. I just don't find any of the characters, apart from their initial design, all that interesting. Still, I have faith in the Marvel films based on their track record thus far so I have hope that it could still be awesome.

Default Update with Artwork

Above is concept artwork of the ship for the movie. Also, an update on the film.

Quote:
A warrior tree?

A rocket-launching raccoon?

Chris Pratt?

Probably the most daring and outrageous of Marvel’s Phase Two slate, Guardians of the Galaxy features a cast of oddball intergalactic characters who would be quite at home knocking back drinks in the Star Wars cantina.

Parks and Recreation’s Pratt plays Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord), the half-alien leader of a team that includes genetically engineered gunslinging varmint Rocket Racoon, a giant fighting tree named Groot, wrestler Dave Bautista as knife-wielding green muscleman Drax the Destroyer, and Zoë Saldana as the assassin Gamora, the last survivor of an otherwise extinct alien race.

In the never-before-seen concept art below, we see a young Quill’s first close encounter on Earth, before he is whisked away to the far reaches of the galaxy. Marvel isn’t revealing much about the craft, but it is not the ship from the comic books that goes by the name “Ship” -– a sentient spacecraft with a feminine persona who has a kind of crush on Star-Lord … (because, you know, THAT would be crazy.)

“Guardians takes place within the continuity of the [other movies] but it’s on the other side of the universe,” Feige says. “We’ve always wanted to do a space movie. I’m obsessed with Star Wars, I’m obsessed with Star Trek.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy comic books began in 1969, and though it is more of a cult-favorite than a mainstream title, the movie aims to change that by introducing this team of law-and-order-enforcing cosmic misfits.

“It’s a huge story on a massive canvas,” Feige says. “We can take it to all those crazy places as long as all the characters respond in an emotionally truthful way. That’s why I believe people are going to respond to Chris Pratt and to an alien Zoë Saldana—because they did respond to that one time before [with Avatar]. And to a tree and a raccoon who, it is certainly our intention, will steal the whole movie.”

The voices of Rocket Raccoon and Groot (who, Hulk-like, isn’t the most verbal character and tends to say only his own name) haven’t been cast yet, but filmmaker James Gunn (Super, Slither) has shown a willingness to cast his offbeat movie in appropriately offbeat ways.

Saldana as a seductive alien badass? No brainer. But Pratt, known for the dim-but-lovable Andy Dwyer on TV, was an unusual a choice for a superhero. (Of course, so was Michael Keaton as Batman once upon a time …)

“He’s a hilariously frumpy, doofy guy in Parks and Rec, and he’s an incredibly kickass ripped guy in Zero Dark Thirty and that’s pretty awesome,” says Feige. “He’s going to need that in Guardians. That’s a big range right there.”

Still, finding the right actor wasn’t easy. “We did a lot of auditions, a lot of screen tests, just as we did for Thor, just as we did for Cap,” Feige says. “[Pratt] was hilarious, he was moving, he was … you bought him in the early versions of the outfit.”

As team leader both on and off screen, Pratt also helped them figure out who else should join the Guardians. “One of the reasons Bautista got the part was because his banter, and ad libs, and screen tests with Pratt were awesome.”

Now they just need their raccoon. “We’re open to being surprised,” the producer says.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige Talks When His Contract with Marvel Studios Expires; Says He’s on Through at Least Phase Two

Much has been made recently about the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel is currently up for re-negotiation. When Downey finally landed the lead role in Iron Man back in 2007, he signed a contract with Marvel for a set number of films. Cut to five years later and RDJ is now the most recognizable face of a unique and ambitious cinematic universe that culminated in last year’s The Avengers, which currently holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend of all time. While Downey’s performance as Tony Stark was certainly one of the keys to Marvel’s success, that crazy Marvel Cinematic Universe plan and its execution are the brainchild of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

Steve recently spoke with Feige for an extended interview, and during the course of their wide-ranging conversation, Steve asked Feige when his contract with Marvel ends. While it’s tough to think of an Iron Man movie without Robert Downey Jr., it’s impossible to consider the whole Marvel Studios going forward without Kevin Feige at the helm. Hit the jump to for Feige’s response and how long he thinks he’ll be running Marvel.

Here’s the full exchange between Steve and Feige regarding when his contract with Marvel is up for renegotiation:

Quote:
Steve: A lot of people are discussing Robert Downey Jr.’s contract and how it will impact the Avengers sequel and Iron Man movies. But I think the bigger question is, when does your contract end?

Quote:
KEVIN FEIGE: You’re the first person that’s ever asked me that question.
I think a lot of people should be asking that question because being honest, there is a reason why all the Marvel movies are good and I think it has your name on it.

Quote:
FEIGE: Oh, that’s very nice. My contract negotiations are not nearly as exciting as Mr. Downey’s. I’m here for a while, certainly through Phase Two.
Do you see yourself still running Marvel in five years?

Quote:
FEIGE: I don’t know, the truth of the matter is, I always sort of set a goal or set a horizon line and look towards that. Then say, “Once I get to that horizon line I will see where we stand.” For a long time it was X-Men 2 and then for a long time it was Iron Man and Incredible Hulk – are we going to be a studio by then or not? Is it going to work or is it not? Then it was Avengers, now it’s Avengers 2. So, two years after that, three years after that, I can’t even begin to guess.
So it sounds like Feige’s contract might be up for re-negotiation at the close of Phase Two, which would be the release of The Avengers 2. This crazy plan of making five different movies with five different superheroes that maintain connective tissue and culminate in a team-up movie—which, in theory, shouldn’t work—was made possible with Feige at the helm, and Iron Man 3 marks an incredibly promising start to Phase Two, so it’s really tough to imagine what Marvel Studios looks like without Feige in charge. Here’s hoping he sticks around for a long, long time.

Look for more from Steve’s interview with Feige in the coming days. If you missed what he had to say about a Doctor Strange movie click here, and for Feige’s updates on The Avengers 2 click here.
