First time viewings in bold.

Oct 1st - The Thing (1982)
Oct 1st - Scream Queens SE01E03
Oct 1st - The Ring (2002)
Oct 2nd - Halloween (2007)
Oct 2nd - Cooties (2015)
Oct 3rd - The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

Oct 4th - The Ring Two (2005)

A sharp decline from the first. Didn't really offer anything new. Was kind of a slog to get through if I'm honest though it's not bad or anything. Just a bit boring. This franchise is much more of a thriller than a Horror in my opinion.

The first time I watched it I felt the same way, but after repeated viewings it grew on me and it works for me. I haven't seen it in years now, but its in my line up this year.

Critters(1986) - 1/2

Maybe not the scariest, but one of my favorites. Good blend of horror/sci fi/comedy and good practical special fx/puppetry. It seems like this movie gets compared to Gremlins alot, but I find them to be totally different minus a few similarities. While Gremlins is probably an overall better movie(s), I like the Crite characters better. Thay have their own language, use of alien technology, perfected the tuck and roll, shoot porcupine like quills that are toxic, and have a taste for human flesh. Awesome!

House(1985) Its been years since I've seen HOUSE and I always remembered the Vietnam zombie dude, Big Ben. Its a nice mix of 80's horror and comedy. The creature effects were good.

Santo Y Blue Demon Contra El Dr. Frankestein(1974) Mexico's greatest legends El Santo & Blue Demon go up against the diabolical Dr. Frankestein who is kidnapping innocent women to use in his brain transplants expirements. These movies are great. They're campy and you usually get 2-3 wrestling matches in between. I have fond memories of watching El Santo movies with my parents.

*Legacy of Blood(1971) After an aged millionaire passes, he leaves his fortune to his heirs under the condition that they must all spend a week at his estate to be split among them. After some strange things, heirs begin to turn up dead. I found this flick to really dull and boring.

*The Brain From Planet Arous(1958) After an alien ship crash lands in the American desert, the being turns out to be a big floating brain with telepathic powers, whose sole purpose is to conquer the world. I loved every bit of this flick. The alien creature was cool looking! I mean, a big, floating, and grotesque looking brain with eyes? Awesome!

-A great atmosphere of the Italian castle with a secret, plus Jefferey Combs and Barbara Crampton. Nothing not to like here. I may rate it higher on a second viewing.

-The theme or score really made the movie for me. While the actual zombies looked a bit fake, some of the gore was still very visceral. I liked it a lot. It just takes a little while to get where it is going.

October 1st:
*The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) =
[Show spoiler]
Defiantly see why it's consider a masterpiece of horror, the violence is minimal and yet made me wince just because of how it's presented. You feel the same emotions that Sally feels because her actress really gives it her all with her fear, her desire to live, it's amazing. The family is probably the best hillbilly villains in horror cinema. If you haven't seen this classic yet, like I before, do yourself a favor and see it, it's fantastic.

October 2nd:
Tusk =
[Show spoiler]
Kevin Smith's second horror film (I'll be doing the first soon), and...(sigh) I'm really sad to give this just a 3, The acting is fantastic (besides one, I'll get to that in a little bit), the writing is amazing, there are some amazing monologues in this film that are truly enthralling and I love (or love to hate) most of the characters (there's that one I flat out don't like that I'll mention soon), it was also kind of brilliant, a parody of films like The Human Centipede, but done in such a tongue-in-cheek way that's still very creepy and disturbing, with the genius technique of implied violence (most of the surgery isn't shown), but it's also funny. Plus it has an ending the wouldn't be too out of place in something like Tales from the Crypt, although it's bit more dramatic then Crypt, which I liked, and it's with another great monologue from a surprise performance from Genesis Rodriguez. So, what brought this down to a 3...the second half. So there's a "surprise" cameo during around the end of act 2, and it's Johnny Depp (it's not really a surprise if you're familiar with Depp) and to put it simply of how out of place this character is, well, it's like putting 20 minutes of The Pink Panther into The Human Centipede, he is that out of place, and there's another thing that makes this character hard to sit through, this is a BAD Depp performance, hands down. Of course that's not the only problem with this second half, when Depp comes in, the whole movie goes way too over the top at that point and it pisses me off because there is an amazing Horror-Comedy-Drama in all these rough points. But because of those rough points I can only give it a 3, but I find myself still liking it because of how much good it has. I recommend a rental for the curious and a buy for the brave. I think Smith has shown to be a good horror director, he just needs to tighten his scripts a bit better for his future horror films. Sorry for this long review, but I needed to really get my thoughts on this film out.

October 3rd:
Daybreakers = 1/2

Some really nasty gore, really interesting universe, smart satire, great acting, gorgeous cinematography, and some clever dark humor; but I feel that it's too short, but that's probably my love of this world talking. This isn't the best vampire movie out there but it's still one of the most creatively original vamp films in the genre.

October 4th:
*The Crazies (2010) =

Haven't seen the original, so I can't compare. However, this film is intense (any scene involving military puts me on the edge of my seat), creepy, greatly acted, beautifully filmed, and brilliantly satirical. Even if you're not a zombie fan, it changes up the formula enough to be refreshing, I highly recommend it.

I'm gutted, switch on The Fog which I recorded from the other night, has the ace opening shot with the hand watch and what happens? Massive bald sign language guy turns up covering a third of the frame. Completely ludicrous.

9/21 - The Mephisto Waltz (1971) - A moody / atmospheric occult thriller that perfectly sets the tone for my Halloween film festival.

9/22 - Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) - Another early '70s occult thriller to set the mood.

9/23 - The Shuttered Room (1967) - Great moody and atmospheric Gothic horror film.

9/24 - The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971) - Nuff' said!

9/25 - Diary of a Madman (1963) - An underrated gem that's perfect for a dark Autumn night.

9/26 - The Wicker Man (1973) - Perhaps one of Christopher Lee's best performances.

9/27 - N/A

9/28 - Race with the Devil (1975) - Great occult thriller from the mid-1970s that's been a favorite of mine for the last 40 years.

9/29 - The Tingler (1959) - Gimmicky but an interesting premise with the inimitable Vincent Price.

9/30 - The Creature from Black Lake (1976) - The opening sequence in the swamp is still chilling after many many viewings of this film. Not to mention the intense "showdown" at the end of the film. Perhaps the best of the Bigfoot-style films of the 1970s.

10/1 - The Devil Rides Out (1968) - I've always loved this late '60s adaptation of Wheatley's novel. Excellent mid-period Hammer occult horror film.

10/2 - Night of Dark Shadows (1971) - A perfect film for a dark rainy Autumn night. Despite the occasional soap opera-ish elements, there's a genuine macabre atmosphere inherent to the film, and a well-executed twist ending. Not to mention a superb film score by Robert Colbert that adds to the horrific proceedings.

10/3 - Sleepy Hollow (1999) - The Gothic atmosphere of this film is almost perfect. An annual favorite.

10/4 - Ghost Story (1981) - It doesn't come close to capturing the Lovecraftian terror of the Peter Straub novel, but it has a subtly creepy macabre tone to it that I've loved since I first saw the film in 1981.

Two words: Dennis Hopper
Personally I find T-Saw Massacre 2 to be a horrendous piece of crap.

...but that's just me.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) is the big screen adaptation of the Ray Bradbury story. Disney did a hell of a job with this film IMO. Yeah it's Disney but just like The Watcher in the Woods three years before it, it has an uncanny ability to still make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Johnathan Pryce is sooo good in this as Mr. Dark, proprietor of Dark's Pandemonium Carnival. A carnival of evil that travels from town to town claiming the souls of it's citizens. The whole cast was great, the scenery beautiful and the plot engaging. A fantastic movie and a classic for the whole family in IMO. Very recommended!

The People Under the Stairs (1991)
1/2 I could not get into this movie. Wes was obviously trying to achieve a smorgasbord of horror, black comedy, violence, slapstick and even social issues. I thought the plot was just silly and hastily thrown together. I couldn't get behind the characters who were all unlikable to me. About the only thing I did like were the gadgets, trap doors and secret passages that were created for the set. Way too many cheesy and cringe-worthy moments. This one was more of a stinker than a horror or black comedy IMO.

I hadn't seen this since it came out, and I remembered enjoying it so I revisited it tonight, and well... I kinda had fun with it. Sure it has its problems, not least of which is Paul W.S. Anderson and that AWFUL lead actress, actually the cast in general, but lets be honest it was always gonna be about those badass Aliens and Predators. So much fun seeing them battle and that was enough for me. It had the potential to be so much better and I for one would like to see another attempt at an Alien vs. Predator film with a better team behind it and a more suspenseful Horror driven angle.
