It won't happen, but O.J.: Made in America deserves a BP nod.

Not that it matters, but what exactly makes films eligible for Best Picture? I thought they just needed to have a theatrical run in US in the given year. Clearly that's not the case as there are films I've noticed not on there that meet that.

The general rule is that the film must have had a theatrical run of at least one week in the U.S. and that the original release date must have been within that calendar year. That is why you see a lot of films getting a one week run in cities like L.A. or N.Y. at year's end before they go wide in January of the next year. For example, Ben Affleck's Live by Night is getting a very minimal run this week in order to qualify for this year's awards even though most people won't even get a chance to see it until next year. The simple fact is that most of the voters will not have even seen a film like this in a regular theater but will have gone to a studio invited screening in a screening room at the studio or received a screener DVD and viewed it that way.

Another reason for an omission from the list could be that of a simple oversight. I am in the industry and vote in the Director's category. Depending upon which category you are in, you get to nominate and vote that category but everyone gets to vote for the Best Picture. I get my year end list and I can tell you that on more than one occasion, I have received a revised list because a film/s have been mistakenly left off.

Just caught Silence. First off, Scorcese has done it again albeit in a bit of a different manner this time. This film is a dazzling feast for the eyes. The storytelling and narrative are not of the high burn level of a Goodfellas or Raging Bull. Without getting into spoiler territory, rather this is an introspective tale presented on a grand scale (epic at times) but never losing sight of its very personal journey on the part of one single man searching for his own truth in a hostile land bent on his destruction. Scorcese has shown considerable passion in this work and proves that he is a master storyteller regardless of the subject matter he is working with. As one reviewer I read put it, "Martin Scorsese proves he's as masterful a filmmaker with men of God as he is with gangsters."

What a year for Andrew Garfield. First Hacksaw Ridge and now Silence. I can't decide which performance is better. They both deserve serious academy consideration. Andrew has, without a doubt, left the Spiderman image far off in the distance behind him. He carries the heavy load of Silence just as effectively as he did in Hacksaw.

I was wrong, she wasn't even nominated for the Indie Spirit Awards. Wow. By far the most overlooked performance of this Awards season.

I just finished watching Hidden Figures. All I can say is that this a gem of a film; wonderful in every way and even more captivating since it is a true story. The film will probably not get any awards since it is largely being overshadowed in the awards sweepstakes by films like La La Land, Fences, Manchester By the Sea, and Jackie. Hidden Figures is every bit as good as each of those other films, and IMHO, better than some of them. It deserves recognition, even if it is only in the form of some high end nominations in this very competitive year. It's easily in my Top 5 of 2016.

To be realistic, Moonlight and Loving are considered Adapted by the Academy. And movies like Lion and Florence Foster Jenkins were deemed ineligible (the WGA always has weird rules, so movies like Star Trek get nominated every few years).

But I'd love to see Deadpool get a nomination And I'm VERY happy to see Hell or High Water in the mix.

But where the hell is Silence...?
