Once again, I still find that turning the HDR setting on the player from Auto to Off gives me a much more dazzling picture than with it turned on. When playing a 4K UltraHD movie with HDR on Auto, it forces the Picture Mode on the TV to go to that horrible HDR Video mode which makes the picture dull, murky, and washed out with no color. Plus it won't let you change it. I don't know why more of you guys aren't experiencing this.

My display is professionally calibrated in its HDR mode, and looks great as it should be. Many of these sets arent too hot in HDR mode without someone with a meter and know how calibrating them.

I love it so far. Netflix and Amazon look great, and the disc PQ is good too.

I got my free UHD Blu-Rays in the mail today (Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons and I ordered through their sale Pineapple Express, Underworld and Inferno), I redeemed them last Thursday night, such fast service!

Just my opinion and I'm a Sony fan boy but if you have a 4K NON-HDR TV the conversion in this player is not that great, I think the Samsung UBD-K8500 looks better after comparing both of them.

To me the SDR conversion looks like shit, so I dunno what to tell ya. I forget if you're the guy who was using neutral color temp, boosted color and sharpness but if so and the HDR mode goes to a more calibrated looking picture that very well might be why.

Mine looks super bright and amazing in HDR mode, and I don't even have a good HDR TV. In fact it's too bright, if anything. I did turn the color up a little though. Might have needed that because of a WCG conversion or something.

Yeah like I just wrote above I thought the SDR conversion looked terrible. Black crush and off colors. Even the blue rating logo at the start of each disc looked splotchy purple and weird. I would not suggest this player to someone without HDR at the moment.

If you have lower nits like me though it is a MUCH better player than the Samsung. Everything looks great after a small color bump.

Its pretty safe to say, if you need HDR to SDR, buy the Panny...

I don't remember all the titles but, you get to choose from almost all if not all the releases that Sony has put out so far on UHD Blu-Ray. After you pick your two free ones, they give you option to choose an additional selection of them for up to 50% off for purchase in their store. Free shipping by the way.

ewaylite

In order of HDR10 picture quality for 4K UHD HDR disc how would you order OPPO 203, Panny UB900, Sony X800.

Also how would you order for upscaling of 1080p blu ray disc movies?

I'd say it depends on your priorities. The Panny seems to have the best SDR conversion, the Oppo has the most features and the Sony seems to offer equal picture quality at a lower price, but (in my experience) has shit SDR conversion.

Sony made the best BD players for my money though, and this player feels like a rock solid piece of home theater equipment. Unless you need SDR I can't imagine being disappointed, but make sure you don't need a feature only the Oppo has.

Got my free movies (and ones I ordered) yesterday and oddly enough all of them were brand new and sealed minus Angels & Demons, which was opened and missing the digital copy code. I tried calling Sony and the lady said that they can only credit my account a digital copy over the phone and if I wanted a "new" copy I'd have to email them pictures to see if I was "eligible".

It's been 3 days since I've emailed and not one single reply....What the heck!

Standard dynamic range (color). So if your UHD TV isn't really equipped to handle HDR, people like having that HDR to SDR conversion so they can enjoy their movies with a color palette similar to what would be on the blu while still getting a nice bump in resolution.

I think.

A lot of this stuff confuses me too but I think that's the gist of it.

They are listed here: http://whysoblu.com/sony-ubp-x800-4k...player-review/

I have not got around to turning HDR off yet to see what happens on my 930D as I promised two pages ago, but I will. I'm confused though. If you turn HDR off on the player does that mean it does not send HDR at all to the TV?

From what Sony told me when I called, as long as you keep the input on the TV itself to Enhanced, that takes care of the HDR from whatever you're playing on the machine.

Mine arrived and after a brief scare involving not outputting Atmos (I had to change a setting) -- I am happy after a few brief tests.

The color was overpowering until I turned off the "Deep color" setting on my TV. Now the color looks gorgeous.

Love the look and feel of it. I will only be playing discs on it for the foreseeable future so I'll leave the streaming comments to the experts.

Honestly, I don't see enough of an upgrade (on my SDR TV) that I would rebuy my collection, but I would certainly purchase all new discs on the format.

C'mon Marvel/Disney!!!!!!

So if I don't care about 4k right now, which would be better as a 1080p streamer, the UBP-X800 or the UHP-H1? I want something with a fast processor so I don't get lag in navigating streaming apps. Should I spend the extra $100 and get the UBP-X800 for future proofing? Is it a dual core processor in the UBP-X800?

You wrote 9 posts about only you are interest in streaming on the X800 on this thread. As I mentioned to you, the X800 will be a waste of money for only streaming purposes only and that you don't have a 4k tv. The UHP-H1 will be wasted money for you as well. The only good thing about the UHP-H1 is the audio playback due to the analog outputs, which you have no use for and its shares the same video processor as the BDP-S6700 that your tried out a while back ago.

You also mentioned that you have a Roku Ultra and its having sound chirping issues. I would recommend you to sell the Roku Ultra because you wasted money on it. Buy a refurbished or new Apple TV 4 (Best Buy has the 32GB version on sale), since its only the best 1080p streamer thats currently in production. I read that the Vudu App will be coming to the Apple TV later this year.
