1 > GP > RN > 2 > 3
Rogue Nation was ok, but it’s a shame McQuarrie is coming back to direct. The original plan was that the Mission films would always have a different director, to see what each one would bring to the series. |

According to IMDb:
Mission: Impossible (1996): Shot on film, no DI scan, so it's native 4K. Mission: Impossible II (2000): Shot on film, no DI scan, so it's native 4K. Mission: Impossible III (2006): Shot on both film and digital, finished on a 2K DI scan, so it's upscaled 4K. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011): Shot on both 35mm and 65mm film, finished on a 4K DI scan, so it's native 4K. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015): Shot on both film and digital, photographed in both 3.4K and 6.5K, finished on a 2K DI scan, so it's upscaled 4K. |

I felt RN had some nice moments but for me all the sequels really don't live up. At least 2 had the action sequences and overstylized photography, but 3 and 4 bored me to tears. It says something that despite all the attempts to do a big stunt sequence; the pinnacle and most recognized image of the series is still the Langley break-in which required only great storytelling.
I guess it's time for a full re-watch anyway. Maybe I just need to go for another spin of disavowing. ![]() |

The first one is still my favourite, but John Woo’s aside, all the sequels are really good.
I’d go: 1, 3, 5, 4, 2 Protocol seems low, but I love that film. Not much between Protocol and Rogue Nation but I think Abrams’s one is the best sequel. Intense as anything. |
