1080 isn't a byword for shite, the Alexa has always been a rather good camera and as long as you're not using awful glass then you're going to bake in a heck of a lot of goodness into that final 1080p master (which literally only has a few pixels' difference to 2K anyway).

Warner Bros. had nothing to do with this.

Unlike Westworld (HBO show but Warner Bros. release), HBO distributes Game of Thrones. This is the FIRST official 4K release from HBO.

Yeah, I can't wait to watch this early next year. I am going to rewatch the entire series before the final season. I hope they have more 4K seasons come out before then. Or maybe I will just stream the entire series before the final season and then buy the complete box set when it drops below $100.

Certainly it's usually the case that an HBO production like this would be released by HBO directly (although given they share the same parent company, their North American UPCs start with the same digits, and Warner distributes all HBO titles globally [that aren't globally licensed by Paramount], the distinction seems somewhat artificial). This one seems a bit more Warner-like though, especially the change of digital copy to UV from HBO's usual iTunes/GP/VUDU/etc one.

I guess Warner might be more involved with helping HBO out for 4K distribution?

Yeah I've been waiting for someone to post some pictures of the packaging once opened.

I was just in the store and it's some kind of thin, hard case that is slightly bigger, about the size of a normal slipbox. But it wasn't chipboard or anything thick. It felt hard, strong, and smooth. I'm not quite sure what it was exactly. Probably a shell with a digibook or an amaray case inside but I couldn't tell.

Huh, that's a new case. All four discs on trays instead of two on, two off. Maybe so it has the thicker case that matches future seasons with possibly more discs? Anyway, at least they're not stacked.

I purchased the Westworld UHD and was let down, so I’m going to pass on this one... even though I would like to see it in 4K.

Hopefully if HBO releases ‘TRUE DETECTIVE’ S1 & S2, they handle the process then, because this transfer is absolutely awesome considering the sources they were filmed on.

And I don’t mean that with the implication that they used bad cameras or lenses; just that it’s amazing just how much detail and depth there is for not being native 4K—let alone not even being 2K.

Just goes to show that the whole 2K/4K-DI thing isn’t the be all, end all.
