I know it wasn't, I've never been on the TikTok and don't plan to. I keep repeating that I do actually recognise the central theme of the film and my god, it's more important than ever. It's the Spidey-style "with great power comes great responsibility" mantra writ large, taking into account the power we all possess as individuals to make the immediate world around us better or worse. I loved that, I really did.

The trouble is that it's wrapped up in something so astonishingly cheesy it's like Wonder Woman directed by George Lucas or something, i.e. some great themes encumbered by clunky-assed storytelling and a woefully misguided sense of nostalgia. I think time will be kind to WW84 as we settle into accepting it for what it is rather than what we want it to be, but it's not a patch on the first WW film.

Agree and the central message is so universal and relatable! Next time when I find the magical dreamstone I will throw it away instead of making a wish.

I don't understand that though. I'm currently watching Aquaman and it is no less cheesy than Wonder Woman 84. I'd even go so far as to say that it's even cheesier than Wonder Woman 84. Yet, that movie is loved and received well critically, somewhat. Now, that does not make sense. Since when has been cheese been a bad thing. Some of the best loved comic book movies are cheesier than he--.

I think the problem was that the film itself, while there was a genuine positive theme and message of honesty the filmmakers just didn't convey it well. There's also something to be said about how Steve came back and the lack of moral conundrum with the dead boyfriend being in the body of some totally random dude. Without it, there are various discussions of assault, rape and overall body autonomy that frankly should not have been glossed over. All of this muddles the positive message the film tried to put forth.

On a more personal and very opinionated view, Diana's story is not fleshed out just more of the same from the first film, and Gal, well she delivers the dialogue but rarely comes across as being a character and more an actress struggling to convey basic emotions with simple line delivery. She cannot headline a major tentpole like this, despite looking the part. There is no denying it, inside the suit, she is Wonder Woman in looks and action, but when it comes to Diana, she is wooden and painful to listen to at times. All of this just drags down the film and makes it seem overlong despite a 2:30:00 runtime.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense that a fun movie full of action, adventure and great visuals, with coherent story and OK villain was better received than WW84. It's impossible.

I can only speak for myself, but the cheese factor isn't even on the radar of things that I disliked about the movie. Cheese is fine when it's done well but to me it was just one of many things this movie did poorly. It just a bad movie, and that was something that I was not expecting. However, I like plenty of bad movies so I'm still hoping that something about this movie will land with me the next time I watch it. I'll have to wait for the UHD though since there's no way I'm streaming it again.

But Superman II is every bit as cheesy as Wonder Woman 84. If not more so.

It's just Aquaman is every bit as bad as Wonder Woman 84. If not, more so. Yet it is well liked. Even by me. Aquaman is full of the same problems as Wonder Woman 84. Both are still good. I just don't get it.

I don't see any wooden performance by Gal of Diana. Diana and Wonder woman are one and the same. It's like saying Superman and Clark Kent are totally different.

I forgot about Aquaman the moment I took the disc out of the player, and I'm not joking. How that film got the plaudits it did astounds me.

Why? They're both cheesy as hell and not in a good way. Especially Superman II. Still loved.

I totally get it. I just don't understand how two movies are equally cheesy and bad, but one is loved over the other. That's what I don't get.

The lunch date scene with Kristin Wiig. The moment the scene begins there is this fake laughter that dialogue tells us is supposed to be the funniest thing she's heard in a long time. Yet her expression does not comes across as anything more than someone faking laughter in an effort to not hurt someone's feelings.

When she reunites with Steve she should be overwhelmed with emotions, but Gal cannot project it to the point it needs to go, so their beautiful reconciliation doesnt have near the emotional impact it should have.

Cheesy doesn't automatically mean bad. What Superman and Superman II excel at is a deep moral center that enrichens the characters, and was the first superhero story to convey such conflict within the media. Clark has wants, needs beyond that of George Reeves of the 1950's or his silver age comic book counterparts. Clark and Lois can never be, because Superman's work takes precedence and he cannot understand why he can't have both until the actions of his consequences come to light. Christopher Reeve is a phenom in the role and aside from the goofy Lester bits that comprised II its still a great film because of this.

...and that's why I said I was getting Superman II vibes but "not in a good way". I do still like plenty of things about that movie but when it gets cheesy it goes Full Edam and I dare say I haven't experienced anything like that in a CBM since those heady days, as such WW84 was a real culture shock. And I say that having seen (and very much enjoyed) Batman & Robin only recently, because at least that film knows what it is, unlike the oil and water approach of WW84.

Aquaman went for over the top and cheese from start to end

Wonder Woman was all over the place on tone. Also it was a sequel where aquaman was not and could set its own tone

I've literally just advocated that as being an advantage but I just didn't give a shit aboot the movie in Aquabro's case, I could've pressed stop at any point and carried on with my life without giving it a moment's thought. I still forget about it to this day when weighing up the DCEU movies, I'm like "oh yeah, there was that Aquaman one too". At least WW84 made me feel something, even if it was admiration and loathing in equal measure.

I'm still trying to forget that Pitbull cover of Africa. It was, without a doubt, the worst moment of the film for me.

Literally could not tell you what it sounded like. It's just gone from my mind. I have faint but terrifying memories of a badly de-aged Temuera Morrison at the start tho, and that the fight scene with Kidman in the house felt like I was watching someone play a video game the way that the camera was roving about in that 'god's eye' kind of way.
