![]() ![]() 10/1 - The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) (First-Time Viewing) - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The first half of this movie had great tension, and foreshadowing. You can just feel the bad vibes brewing, as the young group ventures deeper into unknown territories. There's a bit of a slow-down in the middle, where I felt some scenes with Sally and Franklin plays out longer than they need to. Thankfully, it picks back up again for its final act, especially the dinner scene, which did a great job of immersing you into the character's terror. I think what disturbs me most about this movie, aside from the gross-out imagery and violence, is the fact that things like this do happen in real life (Leatherface himself apparently being inspired by an actual serial killer). It's also pretty cool having seen movies like House of 1,000 Corpses, and more recently X (2022), and now recognizing the obvious influences TCM '74 had on them all. (Extra tidbit: Because I was familiar with the Black Maria truck being a thing, but didn't know its significance, I kept waiting for it to show up in the film. When it finally appeared, it did not disappoint ![]() |

![]() [Show spoiler] First-time viewings are indicated with an ^ [Show spoiler] 10/02/24: -Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker ^ (1981): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Half-interesting horror outing about how the parents of a young toddler get Final Destination'ed by a logging truck on a winding mountain road and plunge over the side to their deaths. Fourteen years later, he grows into strapping Billy Lynch (Jimmy McNichol), having been raised by his doting, bordering-on-smothering Aunt Cheryl Roberts (Susan Tyrrell). Billy's a star athlete on the basketball court (look fast for a young "William" Paxton as a sneering bully) and ready to set out for college, but when Aunt Cheryl has a spasm of unrequited lust aimed at the repairman that results in his bloody death, the virulently homophobic detective investigating the case, Joe Carlson (Bo Svenson), questions why a gay handyman would have come onto and tried to sexually assault Aunt Cheryl (as she claims). Soon unsavory facts from the past come to light as the film barrels towards a violent climax. Also released under the title Night Warning, Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker (cool title!) is a bit more psychologically probing than your typical early-80s teen-oriented meat grinder, but it's all tossed away by an arch, campy (if reasonably well-staged) "psycho-biddy" climax that takes some of the edge off the proceedings. Still, not bad. -Screams Of A Winter Night ^ (1979): ![]() ![]() ![]() Yet another middling horror anthology, as a gaggle of young people gather at a remote cabin in the woods to spin various spooky campfire yarns, none of which are noteworthy in any particular way. Even the wraparound segments devolve into a confused shug of a conclusion. Only noteworthy for one of the tales getting excised in the original theatrical cut (two victims stalked through a graveyard by glowing-eyed specters), getting restored into the Code Red Blu-Ray which sports a extremely ragged transfer. The film isn't terrible or wildly amateurish, merely routine in the extreme (and, at almost two full hours in the full cut, far too long). -The Last Horror Film ^ (1982): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Skeevy Joe Spinell plays NYC cabbie Vinny Durand, who has aspirations to become a great filmmaker, so he hops a plane across the pond to the Cannes Film Festival to realize his dream of netting horror star Jana Bates (Caroline Munro) to headline his hoped-for cinematic opus, devolving into a crazed, increasingly violent stalker as he finds his dreams being thwarted left and right. This Troma production (also released as Fanatic) works reasonably okay as a competent suspense thriller (from that run of early-80s "crazed fanboy" stalker thrillers like The Seduction and The Fan, probably goaded on by the real-life celeb stalking cases of the era including the murder of John Lennon and attempted assassination of President Reagan, which are both mentioned in the film), but what really distinguishes it is the mouth-watering capturing of the 1981 Cannes lineup. Film fanatics will want to freeze the frame constantly in order to catch the bevy of promotional posters (including a massive display bracketing a doorway for that year's 007 opus For Your Eyes Only). Something like this happening in this day and age would be almost unthinkable, so how this low-budget Troma movie managed to clear the rights for all of these featured movies is beyond me. It also features a reasonably clever wrap-up that concludes the proceedings on a wryly amusing note. |

Sole Survivor (1983): Effective creepfest about the lone survivor of a horrific air plane crash. Moody and atmospheric, reminiscent of Carnival of Souls (1962), and an obvious influence on the later Final Destination series. 3 1/2 skulls.

October 2nd - A Glorious Time For Zombie Anniversaries (Or Should That Be Goriest Time?):
Film #3. Shaun Of The Dead (2004) ![]() ![]() Man, what to say about Shaun Of The Dead (2004) that hasn't already been said more eloquently by so many other fans before? I still remember seeing this film in theaters when it was originally released and I was absolutely blown away by it. If this film didn't single-handedly invent the "Rom-Zom-Com" film (that's "Romantic Zombie Comedy" film), it undoubtedly remains as the pinnacle of it. Despite its apocalyptic premise, I personally regard this film as a "feel good movie" or a "comfort blanket" of sorts because it's a film that one can't help but revisit time and time again. Hell, it has been considered as "mandatory viewing" every Halloween season in my household ever since it was released. In fact, there are so many little nuances hidden throughout the film, I'd argue that it actually gets better every time you watch it! The dreary overcast skies and the uniquely English/British demeanor of it all also add a special something extra to the whole atmosphere as well. Points Of Interest include: Razor-sharp comedic dialogue that's endlessly quotable, plenty of pints, energetic editing, lots of clever and subtle references/homages to classic zombie films, music driven action, a Harry Potter look-alike (even if he is a tw*t), splatter-ific zombie carnage abound, a rhythmic pub brawl set to Queen ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A bloody brilliant, original, hilarious, and dearly beloved "slice of fried gold" that still holds up 20 years later. Cheers mates! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Film #4. Zombi 2 (1979) ![]() ![]() Believe it or not, this film was originally marketed and released in Italy as an unofficial "in-name-only" sequel to George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead (1978). But don't let this fact fool you into thinking this film is merely some cheap spaghetti rip-off because it easily stands on its own two decaying feet. One of the most interesting qualities this film has to offer is its unique and equally balanced blend of "Zombie lore" (for lack of a more sophisticated term). The combination of Romero's more contemporary "living dead" criteria mixed with the more traditional zombie origins rooted in Haitian folklore/Vodou is an effective concept. It all cleverly makes perfect sense even more so when you consider the story's tropical island/jungle setting and its (mad) scientist resident. I fully admit that I am completely biased here because I absolutely LOVE all Italian horror films (even the terrible and painfully boring ones too). However, I still believe that Zombi 2 (1979) is a solid film regardless. It's also an excellent starting point for curious viewers who remain unfamiliar with the distinctly stylish brand of Italian horror filmmaking. Points Of Interest include: Beautiful Caribbean island scenery, a cameo by director Lucio "the Italian godfather of gore" Fulci himself, a near-nude underwater scuba diving sequence, a zombie wrestling a REAL tiger shark underwater ( ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A personal all-time favorite film and a true flagship title for Italian horror cinema in general, even 45 years later. Fulci lives! Now where's my pizza? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's some Fabio Frizzi music for ya... but heavier! ![]() Courtesy of the aptly named Death Metal band Fulci, from where else but Italy of course! ![]() ![]() [Show spoiler]
