Agreed.

There's no opinions in this thread. Just facts.

The 2008 version is closer to the original theatrical presentation. Simple as that. It may not be pretty, but it's closer than the 2010 version.

The ideal situation would be if they issued the 2008 version along with a pair of glasses which have slightly hazy lenses on them. That way people who prefer a look closer to the original can watch without using the glasses, and those who like their BD movies smooth can just put on the glasses and away they go. One edition to rule them all!

I recently watched the 2010 version for the first time, and I must say I'm glad that I didn't listen to everyone saying how bad it is. I mean I can understand some of the complaints, but IMO it looked fantastic! Before anyone rags on me, please let me explain that I'm no videophile, so I wouldn't know what EE or DNR really is or how it affects the picture. I just take as I see it and for me the movie looked brand new! There were only a few scenes to me that looked a bit waxy, but it really didn't bother me at all.

So for me, owning both versions is great, since if I ever wanted to watch it as it apparently was "intended", I can always pop in the first release.

This was why I included disc 2 of the Collector's Edition DVD in with 2008 BD version. Best of both worlds.

I think the UHE would be more popular if they limited it to 3000 copies.

Ignorance is bliss. Here is an image comparison of how exactly things change when you mess with the original. Aside from washing the grain out, they also changed the actual color and artistic style of the movie, not to mention the waxiness on faces.

But if all you're interested in is the movie "looking like new", then obviously the concept of fidelity to the original is not an issue for you.

Next step: Let's take all those old classic sci-fi movies and scrub and recolorize them, then replace all the hokey special effects with brand new CGI effects, so it "looks like new"!

There's no debate. You are making it a debate. The perplexing part is that I have done more than my share of homework on these two releases.

Fact: The 2008 version is closer to the theatrical presentation.

Fact: The 2010 version, despite receiving a new master, has moderate to heavy DNR applied throughout the entire film. Colors are over-saturated and contrast is overblown. Fine detail on clothing, weapons, and foliage is marginally worse than the 2008 version.

Fact: The extras on disc 2 of the Collector's Edition DVD are almost identical to the extras found on 2010 BD version.

Fact: The DTS-HD MA 5.1 track is identical on both the 2008 and 2010 releases.

if there was no debate, there would not be 5000 posts. Get over yourself... your opinion, no matter how accurate you feel it is, is still your opinion...

Then perhaps it would actually be a proper collectible "Ultimate", rather than the more commonly available "Renamed Bastardized Edition"

No, he is, as he has said, stating facts. Everything he's written is a provable fact. Opinion is whether or not he prefers one version to another, and certainly the post you just quoted doesn't say which version he prefers, just the facts.

The debate rages because people seem to have difficulty comprehending facts.

Hey, I'm not saying that I like ALL movies to look completely fresh & brand new (I'm no child, so I like alot of older movies), I'm just saying with this particular movie, I enjoyed the "newer" look of it as compared to the first release. You have to understand, I saw this movie when it came out, so for it to look as new as it does is great.

PS: Those comparison pics you posted look way worse up close compared to how it looked on my TV, of course if it looked THAT bad on my TV, then I def would prefer the 2008 release

You can deny the facts all you want. If that makes you sleep better at night then so be it.

I saw this movie when it came out (I was 16 at the time), and the 2008 edition which I have is very close to how the movie looked in the theater. Perhaps your TV (or PC monitor) isn't calibrated, so the image I posted looks wrong to you, but it's a fairly accurate comparison of how these two editions actually do look.

The issue is that it is easy to make the 2008 edition look like the 2010 edition. Just turn up the DNR on your TV (most HDTVs have this setting). Also increase the Sharpness control, which is much the same as the Edge Enhancement baked into the 2010 edition. Finally, change the Color, Brightness and Contrast controls, to oversaturate and slightly wash out the picture, and Viola! you can achieve much the same "new" look as the 2010 edition.

However you can't do the reverse. You can't turn the 2010 edition into the more faithful 2008 edition. You can't remove DNR or EE, even if you turn Sharpness to 0 (which is the correct calibrated setting by the way), or switch off DNR (which is again the correct setting for an HDTV). You can't restore film grain which has been artificially scrubbed, nor the detail which has been washed away along with that grain.

This is why faithfulness to the original for every movie is important. Starting with an original and faithful movie source, every person can change it to suit their taste. But if you start with a source that's already been molested and altered, the best you can get is a compromise since you can't undo some of these changes or restore missing detail out of thin air.
