I always use international. I'm not American and cinema is a global business.

Whether you've heard of other films on the list is immaterial. They made more money.

That’s an absurd oversimplification. The biggest flaw you see in these arguments is that ATC and Afterlife, both of which are terrible movies, represent the true potential of the franchise. They’re failures. They represent what you get when you release terrible Ghostbusters movies.

The nearly 50/50 split of the Ghostbusters movie released at the height of the franchise’s popularity is obviously the one you’d want to focus on, and absolutely not based on the quality of GB2 itself. That number represents the success of the theme song, the cartoon, video games, the massive popularity of toys and merch etc. It represents all of the people who didn’t show up in the first film’s numbers for whatever reason, probably most of which are people who watched pirated copies as they waited months for the movie to release internationally.

They quite literally made two Ghostbusters movies that nobody ever asked for. The goal here would be to exploit the potential of this franchise and they’ve miserably failed twice. Top Gun Maverick, on the other hand, is the Top Gun sequel that every human being who ever imagined a Top Gun sequel imagined. It’s not rocket science.

Paul Feig and Jason Reitman did. That's how the process works. Not by filmmakers asking for permission first.

I'm glad that we got these movies, as much as they might be divisive in some quarters.

At least the franchise isn't dead yet.

Finally forced myself to watch this and it wasn't half bad. I really liked the opening scene and appreciate the fact that they blended in some decent horror elements like the first two films. I was surprised
[Show spoiler] Slimer
didn't make an appearance and I thought
[Show spoiler]Moranis
was suppose to appear too. What drives me batty about it though, same with the
[Show spoiler]Curse of Chucky
and
[Show spoiler]The Walking Dead
, is how they bring back all the characters we actually care about only at the very end. As little as I cared for the recent Star Wars trilogy at least they integrated the older characters into the entire films. Rather than have them come to the rescue at the very end, for a bunch of characters we barely know or care about, and then reveal that Hans has started a successful universe crossing shipping company or something.

Just saw this tonight and really loved it. So much fun, so much love given to the original film in this one. McKenna Grace is a very good young actress. She’s really good in this and I love when she drops by Young Sheldon. Seeing the Ghostbusters back gave me the warm and fuzzies. 8.5/10 stars.

The only major issue I had was that they used the old trope of only having the original cast back for the last few moments of the movie.

They should have been integrated into the story from the start. You can still have them interacting with the kids while in the town... and maybe growing a familial type of bond... while dealing with the return of the main villain from the first film.

I didn't come to see a type of Stranger Things. My interest is in the original Ghostbusters, whether they're older or not.

Yeah I agree and it was the whole kids take over thing.
Although I did enjoy the movie it would have been nice to jave the main three throughout the film like you say. It would have made Egons appearance at the end more impactful as well.

I didn't have a problem with the more Amblin-esque take on the material, with the kids, but found the third act conflict to be both too simplistic and way too reminiscent of the original movie (though the updates effects and costume and makeup looked really cool).

Also, the way the original characters were handled felt tacked on, and came of as more of a gimmick rather than a fully satisfying return (and the shots of them didn't even feel like they belonged to the same movie).

Still, it's a good and enjoyable flick.

The end credits tag of Janine sat talking about Ghostbusters with Winston as well as behind the scenes shots where Annie Potts is on set with Sigourney Weaver, both in costume, and other photos where she's seemingly present at the climax of the movie, makes me think there was a whole subplot of her rounding up the originals that was erased from the film:

Yeah I remember there being rumors of Venkman being a professor now and they shot him at a university.

Actually it makes total freaking sense that Janine visiting Winston was part of that subplot. I guess they wanted their return to be a surprise? Kind of shocked none of this footage made it out.

Oh , I believe so, too.

It would've made their inclusion in the movie more organic and less of an SNL sketch style cameo.

Nice thread bump! I have yet to see this. Dunno why. I will grab the 4K disc and watch it that way. No harm in a blind buy. From most accounts, it’s solid and a worthy sequel to the terrific original.

As for the original characters, if they are only there briefly then that’s Ok with me. That’s better than what we got with certain "other" franchises where the original characters were sort of hacked up or made to be miserable. No thanks. And the return of the main villain? Oh no…. Not that!

Somehow, Gozer the Gozarian returned…..

Afterlife somehow manages to cram more of this into like 5 minutes of screentime than you get in the entire Star Wars sequel trilogy.

They learned all the wrong lessons from TFA while willfully disregarding the spirit and tone of Ghostbusters. You can say what you want about the Star Wars sequel trilogy (I’m not a fan) but there isn’t a second where it doesn’t feel like Star Wars. But there isn’t a second of Afterlife that feels like Ghostbusters.
