The Graduate isn't too bad. Although that's the only one I really have to go by.

SC can do an outstanding job (Le Grande Illusion) but they lack the consistency that Criterion has.

Buy BBS, and I'm saying that not only as a Monkees fan, but as a new Hollywood fan. Head, Five Easy Pieces and King of Marvin Gardens are outstanding. The last Picture Show is great, Easy Rider is good, Drive, He Sais is ok. A Safe Place sucks but the others more than make up for it. The bonus features are outstanding too.
I'm am Monkees fan as well, that is one of the main reasons I would buy the set. I may just have to get them both

Just got Pierrot Le Fou on ebay but had to pay 35 bucks for it. That's probably the lowest we'll ever see it though. Anyone know how long it has been out of print?

Not sure about getting these titles quicker more like never. In Region A there hasn't been a studiocanal collection release for a couple of years. They just finally announced Le Grande Illusion. There are not many Region A distributors that release foreign or arthouse films and would license these from SC. Case in point most of the titles that SC took away from Criterion a few years back have yet to be released here. Like Peeping Tom, Le Corbeu, The Fallen Idol, The Orphic Trilogy, Port of Shadows, Quai des Orfèvres, The Small Back Room and many more.

While I'm glad to have Ran, Ladykillers etc I have little doubt that Criterion would have done a better job and hold a bit of a grudge against SC for licensing a lot of these films to Lionsgate only to have them collect dust.

About a year, maybe. It had either just gone out of print or was about to when I picked it up last year around this time (either the B2G1 or 50%).

I'm on the same boat as you are. And also Dial M For Murder.

Goodness, that Mulholland Dr tease got me all perked up!

Not sure, although I know they announced it would be going out of print several years back.

What Octagon said. I got it for free last year during the B2G1 sale, as it had recently went OOP, and I didn't want to risk not getting it during the 50% off sale, since so many wanted a copy. It's worth the price you paid though if it makes you feel any better.

I would, if I didn't already have them. Well, I'm still waiting on Samurai Trilogy, as it only shipped yesterday.

Also, have you watched Head before? I know a lot of people claimed they were "no longer fans" because they hated the film. It tends to divide the most loyal of fans on its merits. I love the hell out of it, as it actually made me respect them more, and become a Fan, rather than someone who would only listen to their greatest hits and gently mock them. The film has some of the best music they ever made IMHO.

The audio commentary is much better than the individual ones they boys put out on random episodes of the DVD box sets, Criterion did an excellent job at splicing them together to make them sound cohesive as they were recorded separately. Also, they actually talk about the film throughout, and don't just make random remarks here and there that have nothing to do with the film, and they're very respectful of each other, with no snarky potshots about other members of the group, which is how it was on the TV commentaries.

Also, we finally get to see Micky and Peter's screen tests! In 1080i no less!

NP. If I had paid for it, it would have been 34.79, according to B&N's invoice on my account. If you want to be technical, I paid about 28.33 for it due to the B2G1 sale. I ordered Night of the Hunter and Gimme Shelter with it, and was able to use 10% off my total order, which brought Night of the Hunter down to 40, and Gimme Shelter down to 32 (they were cheaper than MSRP by 5 bucks at that point last year during that sale, and I wanted them just as much as Pierrot le fou, that I couldn't wait a week, much like this year and the order I did to get my mom Pillars of the Earth). I honestly don't see why people are so hard up on B&N, as I've had good service from them, and find them to be cheaper than Amazon.com, especially as of late when it comes to buying stuff even at full price. They still end up being a few bucks cheaper once you apply the import tax and shipping at Amazon.com.

Pierrot le fou just gets better each time you watch it.

I hope that the Mulholland Drive release turns out to be true, and if it does, I hope it includes the 90 minute pilot version.

As much as I agree with the view that posting our purchases is pointless, I'm excited over mine, today from Barnes and Noble...so I'm doing it anyway :

Is there a way to tell is the Three Colors set has the corrected disk from the outside packaging?

I just picked it up today however I forgot about this error and want to make sure I have the corrected disk before I open it if possible....

Any insights?

What is everyone's take on Broadcast News? I've been checking some reviews out and Amazon and imdB seem to be almost opposite. I just blind bought it during the sale for like $12, I like Albert Brooks and Hunter as well. Is it too 80's (cheese), or is it what most on Amazon have said, being an adult-smart comedy with rewatchability factors? I always keep my blindbuys wrapped just in case I get buyers remorse, but would love to hear others opinions on the film.
I took a few of the strong opinions for Double Life of Veronique on this board and picked that up too, but I'm more confident in that buy cause I dig atmospheric, stylized films.

No, you can only tell from the disc itself.... and I'm pretty sure the only retailer you can really be certain has the correct version is Criterion's own site.

I love Broadcast News and would definitely recommend it. It is very funny and prescient. I think it has a lot of rewatchability.

I LOVE Broadcast News! It has a lot of re-watchability. but its not just a light fluffy film either. The scene where Albert Brooks talks about what the devil might be like if he were actually around is great! I bought it when first released, not having seen it for a few years, and I was amazed how my perception of the film changed. When I first saw it I identified strongly with Albert Brook's character, but these days I really sympathize with William Hurt's character Tom.

For $12, definitely keep it. It's a fun film, but it has a lot of meat on it's bones too.
