What do you mean? I know this disc is basically SDR in an HDR container so we're not really getting HDR to begin with, but the HDR Optimizer on the Panny absolutely brightens the image.

Yes, it works wonders. First time I've had to use it, or even look for such a feature for that matter.

How does it work?

Does it raise the lowest light level, or ”strech” the brightness value of each pixel? If the latter so, is it so e.g. if the movie only uses 5 of the available 10 bits for brightness, then it will remap those 5 bit values onto 10 bit values? Sounds like that could risk introducing artifacts such as banding, since fewer bits will in practise be used to represent the full color space that is displayed compared to if 10 bits would have been used in the source material directly.

Pretty sure it's just semantics. I have noticed that some will refer to the "HDR optimizer" as only the function that repackages the metadata to your specificed max nit level and helps you retain highlight detail. Others include the extra controls for dynamic range adjustment, brightness, white and black tone curve etc and seem to consider the optimizer more like a suite of tools. If you switch to one of those brighter image profiles e.g. "bright environment" it's the dynamic range adjustment setting which gets bumped up.

HDR Optimizer is a ON / OFF option which is separate from the rest HDR settings like Dynamic Range Adjustment, Brightness, Tone Curve (White).etc., including presets like Standard, Natural Environment and the rest.

Based on your post someone might think that enabling that option will make Heat better, which is not true.

I don't think it's only semantics, we're talking about a specific thing so let's be more specific

Fair enough re: semantics, I probably could've worded it better but I just meant that for those that found the film to be too dark and own the Panny, by using the HDR optimizer it brightens the image. I don't think it makes the film "better" per se (as I found it to be perfectly watchable without using the HDR optimizer) but for those that found it to be too dark, this can be an option rather than screwing with your HDR settings.

I think how your player or monitor/ projector handles tone mapping makes a big difference in how this looks.

Then I wonder why this tone mapping issue (another pièce de résistance on this forum, together with 'shut your damn curtains/grope in the dark' and, my favorite, 'you should pro-calibrate your tv to watch this') it only happens with this specific title and no other.
Cause if that is the reason then somebody must've scr#wed up the tone mapping.

Either way, there's something seriously wrong with this title.

Maybe, because I watch on a projector in a completely dark theater room and I didn’t touch any controls, but I also watch 3D with glasses so I’m use to “dark”.

I tried to watch Heat 4K UHD, but ended up knocking over a lamp, treading on the cat and setting fire to the couch.

That is the very reason why I do not even bother to post here codes that are of no use to me anymore (all of them, really).

You should stay still while watching a movie.

They should attach that as a hazard warning sticker on the front cover of Heat 4K UHDs.

I'm not a fan of the spine title's font color being red. I shouldn't be looking for red on my shelf when looking for the movie Heat.

The rest is gone, but I put video file through madMeasureHDR for fun and it calculated MaxCLL at 130, and MaxFALL at 54 (black bars excluded).
I wrote a script that reads every frame and outputs the MaxCLL & MaxFALL values for every frame to a CSV. That way I can create HDR plots that I trust to be accurate. MaxCLL & MaxFALL are biased towards outliers so I added a 99th percentile value that is, in my opinion, a more meaningful metric.

MaxCLL:

MaxFALL:
