Guardians of the Galaxy's Global Box Office Passes Iron Man to Become Marvel's Biggest Franchise-Starter

Guardians of the Galaxy passed $586 million at the global box office today, surpassing Iron Man to become the top-grossing franchise-starter yet from Marvel Studios, according to the film's director, James Gunn.

Here's what Gunn had to say via Facebook:

Guardians of the Galaxy box office just passed up Iron Man, making us the biggest Marvel franchise-starter yet. And we still haven't opened in Japan, China, or Italy.

If I had a penny for every time someone said making a Marvel movie with a talking raccoon was dumb and that Guardians was going to bomb, I'd probably have just about the amount of money Guardians has made so far. So I'm glad I spent that time making a film instead of counting people and their opinions, because we're still going strong. Also, making the movie was a little more productive, and people seem to enjoy it. Not to mention that I would have had a difficult time collecting all those pennies, and the bank would have been pissed off at me when I tried to exchange them for large bills.

But, once more, YOU ALL are the ones who bought the tickets. We provided the material, but you took it into your hearts and made it a hit. So THANK YOU, and love to you all (even those of you from whom I'd otherwise be collecting pennies).

Iron Man generated $318 million domestically to Guardians's $295 million (so far), meaning that the film has a ways to go (and probably about two weeks) before it has the same designation in U.S. Along the way, it will pass Iron Man 2. Presently, it's the top-grossing Marvel Studios movie without Iron Man in it, placing it fifth on the all-time list, at the domestic box office. Ahead of it are, in order, Marvel's The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Finally caught this yesterday...super fun film. If the soundtrack doesn't get you pumped up you ought to check your pulse. I was glad to see they included some emotional scenes in the film. You guys obviously know which ones I'm talking about...they gutted me. All around a fabulous time at the movies.

Yeah, I felt pretty much the same way after various levels of disappointment during the summer (Xformers-stunk, Spider Man-didn't suck maybe, but wasn't that great, Transcendence-dull, etc.), it was great to walk out of the theater with a big smile on my face after GotG. Also enjoyed Captain America and X-Men. Divergent was step down maybe (but still worthwhile IMO). Godzilla was fine and I liked Edge of Tomorrow (or maybe I should say I liked Emily Blunt....the visuals were amazing and the special effects weren't bad either ).

How Xformers did so well is just baffling to me. Goodwill from previous efforts (which weren't THAT good either) I suppose.

James Gunn Details a GOTG Deleted Scene

"Here's me and the actor Spencer Wilding who played the Mean Guard who jabs Quill in the prison with the electrical staff and gets his comeuppance to Escape (the Piña Colada Song). He also has a little container of Play-Doh. Why Play-Doh? Because I would keep a pile of little Play-Doh containers onset and if someone did an especially amazing job that day - whether it was an actor, a grip, a stunt man, or a PA - they'd get a canister of Play-Doh. I probably only gave about 40 containers out over the entire shoot - on an 85 day schedule with a crew of a couple hundred, that isn't much. I chose Play-Doh because I love the smell of it - opening a new container and smelling it puts me in a creative, child-like place. And who doesn't love playing with Play-Doh (I swear Play-Doh isn't paying for this post)? Anway, Spencer got the Play-Doh for a scene where he danced through the prison listening to Quill's Walkman (specifically, Magic by Pilot). We cut the scene for many reasons, but it was awesome and hilarious and Spence more than deserved his rarely-given Play-Doh (and, yes, before you ask me a thousand times below, it WILL be on the Blu-Ray outtakes, and no I will not tell you the release date - you can go see the movie again! It's still out!) Have a great day (or night depending in where you are)."

I was very surprised at the parts you're mentioning, thought for a second I was in the wrong film. But I loved them and they definitely got to me.

Considering this is Marvel's biggest movie, you'd think they'd do something special for it, but I have a feeling it'll still have very few bonus features (remember how special The Avengers was?). Maybe the most we'll get is the already-available soundtrack with the 3D edition (remember Iron Man 3?).

It shouldn't be a problem for it to come out on December 9th on the same date as those other movies you've mentioned of, because its their Blu-ray release dates and not their theatrical release dates.
