I recently bought the 4k having been aware of all the issues, really wanted to find some positives, have the previous DVD and the blu rays but I just can't get past the darkness of this I don't remember sitting in the cinema on its original release and it looking this grim ( still I had to have it in my 4k collection) admittedly its going back some years but I recall a film with colours and one I didn't feel was dark.

As I said, I was surprised by how much better the MA stream looked on my sister's TV than on mine.

As I said on the previous page, with Tone Mapping activated the movie looks fine on my OLED (somewhere in between both images), which makes me pretty sure there was a mistake somewhere.
Either it was calibrated with Tone Mapping on, or the HDR data is not properly displayed on some TVs because of an error somewhere.

I'm sure Mann didn't want it as dark as the top image.

I tend to agree. I think there has to be some issue with the HDR Data that causes it to be so dark on many TVs. Certain modifications or calibrations may improve the image as you mention, but not on all TVs. On some it's just gonna be dark.

Yeah the issue is it's set to way too low brightness.

I was obsessed with this movie lately and watched the Blu ray and UHD back to back days. I will say the Blu ray doesn't cut it for me after seeing the UHD because it's missing the refined grain field of the UHD and the extra 4k detail, there is no way I could watch it over the 4k and be satisfied. However the brightness of the Blu ray is clearly superior and more natural, the whites are super crisp in the chapter 4 armored car scene for example. I compared that scene and the really dark dinner dance scene on the Blu ray to the UHD. The UHD definitely loses to the Blu ray for me without Dynamic Tone Mapping on, which I do not use. But I decided to watch this with tone mapping enabled, and it looks suspiciously more right, closer to the Blu ray, even grain is easier to spot. The dark dinner dance scene with no tone mapping has almost no fabric outline on their outfits, but with the tone mapping on it's slightly more visible and just looks more correct. Still darker than the Blu ray but much more pleasing visually. So after reading all the opinions since this came out, I think I need to join the camp that says it does make sense something was goofed on this.

You could use madVR to brighten the UHD, see below:

Gave this a spin for a second time and I’ve gotta say this transfer has grown on me. It’s beautifully filmic.

Glad to see this thread is alive and well with garbo opinions.

This is a great looking UHD from start to finish.

Exceptional grain structure throughout, terrific compression, subdued color leading to a natural look, no nuked up HDR, etc etc

Posts in here continue to show why you can only value the opinions and feedback of a very small handful of users on this side of the Blu-Ray forum.

If I turn on dynamic tone mapping on my tv the transfer looks great. With my default settings the disc is unwatchable. I'm just happy there is a way to enjoy the UHD.

While I still don't have this title yet to see what everyone is really complaining about. I do know that for my TV Disney/Fox/Warner/Universal titles always have to have the contrast boosted from 50 to 100 to make them look right. So, it may just be that people need to check their settings or create a special setting titles like these.

Or it may just be that people complain for arbitrary reasons that run contrary to what is actually factual.

Like I said, this part of the sub-forum has become polluted over the last couple of years with users that don't know what they are talking about.

There are UHDs that have higher ABLs, yet crush the hell out of their black levels. There's nothing like that on display here.

Get the disc if you don't have it. It looks great.

Exactly this is another Disney $h!+tackular HDR Pass which I personally think was done by a computer and not a person! It is atrocious. The picture is way too dim and California does not look like that outside at all. It is extremely bright! Pirates of the Caribbean has the exact same problem and Dynamic Tone mapping is a must. With the option on it matches the Blu-Ray disc in light output which was stellar for the format. Look at Pirates 5 with HDR, it is done superbly! Pirates 1 is a disaster.

Before accusing people for polluting the forum you better make sure you are not doing it yourself. A friend of mine bought a new tv and said Heat looked too dim on his old tv, but with the new one it looks perfectly fine. The disc looks different on different setups. On my setup the disc is too dim. And I don't mean it's a bit too dim for my taste, but completely unwatchable.

This is a great disc, with tone mapping manipulation. Infact this is the only disc I own that is completely saved by using the Dynamic Tone Mapping. Watch the scene where he's with his wife at the restaraunt dancing in the dark ballroom, raw HDR = Pacino floating head, DTM = he's wearing a suit. I watched it several times raw in the beginning and it's unquestionably too dark, the Blu ray is just about a better option under those circumstances. It's a bit sad a ton of people watching this probably have no idea what's wrong with it.
