I thought the film was pretty mediocre to start with. Then again, pretty much everything that Fincher has done has been a bore (IMHO).

Finally someone with love for New World! I think it's great, and I'm convinced it's the most misunderstood (or not understood at all) Malick of all. And it's actually his best in my book. A very minority opinion, I know. Guess it's a club of two now.

I don't think people can watch Tree of Life the way you watch most other films. It's a film that's wanting to portray--and I choose this word carefully--an idea rather than tell a story, though there's a story in the movie, too. Tree of Life changed the way I watch Malick's film, and I'm planning to do my own private Malick Fest when school's finally over, looking at how the Way of Grace/Way of Nature dichotomy in Tree works out in the rest of his films. It's pretty clear to me how that happens in Badlands and New World (tho I'm going to watch New World again because it's so freakin beautiful). I'll be majorly impressed, even awed, if Malick has been working with this same idea though all his films and all these decades.

Anyway, I think Tree of Life is more accessible if it's thought of like The Mill and the Cross or Film Socialisme. Story and character are not the point in films like this. And I think it's fine to say you don't like that kind of movie, too. It doesn't mean it's bad; it just means that type of movie doesn't appeal to you. I'm getting close to that with superhero movies at this point.

More to follow on my theory that Tree of Life is the Malick Rosetta Stone.

Approximately 6 weeks ago, I had zero Criterion Blurays. Thanks greatly to the latest Barnes & Noble 50% off sale, I now have 12! (... and the sale isn't over yet).

Oh ... and the Criterion purchases boosted me over the 100 mark for total Blurays owned.

Well now I have to rank them:

The Thin Red Line - A+
Days of Heaven - A
Badlands - B+
The New World - B+
The Tree of Life - B

If I am not mistaken, there is a Barnes and Nobel 50% off sale going on right now, right?

Is there any way of finding out if a given store will be participating in this? I ask because I'm from Canada, and it's cheaper to just show up at the store in person than order off the website, because the shipping fees can be a huge problem. Besides, I'm probably going across the River tomorrow anyways, and it's only about 20 minutes to Amherst where they apparently have a store.

Thanks

What the hell, I'll partake in the Malick rating:

The Tree of Life - 10/10
Days of Heaven - 10/10
Badlands - 10/10
The New World - 9/10
The Thin Red Line - 9/10

Yeah, I'm kind of a fan. The Tree of Life is definitely his best work, I think.

I think we're in the minority but I thought The Game was an insult to my intelligence. I don't want to start bashing this director though, because I know a lot of people love him and I've said it before, but his films are shallow ponds.

I mostly agree.

I enjoy(ed) Seven and Zodiac.

That's as far as it goes.

Thin Red Line A+
Tree of Life A
Badlands A -
The New World B
Days Of Heaven B-

On that note, my copy of Lola Montes pixelates and starts skipping around the 1:24 mark. Anyone else's?

you realize you're talking about the guy who made Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, and The Social Network right? Even Fincher's lesser films are better than 90% of the trash Hollywood puts out.

I feel the same way about Brian De Palma. I'd rewatch Mission to Mars or The Black Dahlia any day over The Dark Knight Rises.

The Amherst store (on Niagara Falls Blvd, right off I-290) is participating, and has a media section. Enjoy.

I hate putting this out there, but I'm not entirely impressed with The Thin Red Line's picture. Is it great? Of course! But I'm not entirely blown away by it like some people. I don't know, maybe hearing everyone speak about how great it is I expected something different than from what I saw.

Edit: I guess to expand a little bit: I feel I expected a much stronger and sharper image, but the one I saw looked soft. I compare it to screenshots on this site and DVDBeaver, and my copy looks pretty much the same as both, so I'm not sure what to think.

Funny how they can sell me nook accessories but not the device itself. At least when I get the cover it will only be a month before I get the actual device due to the slow shipping.
Le Havre is certainly not groundbreaking cinema but it is a good film. You'll enjoy it.

I think it has some Melville and Les Mis in it...
