Great 3D. 9/10. Rivals Doctor Strange 2 for strong 3D.

Did Amazon Japan change the shipping to US policy? Seems like I can order even after the preorder date to the US. Still on the fence on getting it.

Yes I’ve done so for all prior such releases plus added any missing forced English subtitles via .SRT

This was one of the main criticisms that this movie faced, that you shouldn't need to watch all this content to enjoy the movie - plus maybe Captain Marvel? Was Secret Invasion at all relevant? I mostly remember WandaVision and Ms Marvel, I didn't watch Secret Invasion, and I don't remember Captain Marvel.

But I didn't find WandaVision or Ms Marvel to be at all necessary... I think this movie just has a bad script. I do think that this actually could have been a great movie if it had a better script. Even the story is okay if not terribly interesting, but it could have been much better told. I also think the villain was miscast, or perhaps just poorly directed.

The 3D was good enough but it was hard to enjoy with how weak the film was overall, even just in "don't think and enjoy" mode.

I definitely wish they had opened up the aspect ratio. On my large wall with my projector, the taller 16:9 aspect ratio really creates a more immersive experience, especially with 3D.

One of the best things that I can say about this release lol was that the discs were pristine and the inside of the case was pristine. High quality manufacturing from Japan as always.

Thankfully the film can be watched without subtitles, they are entirely inconsequential.

Mine hasn't arrived yet as I chose the slow boat. Wasn't in that big of a hurry to pay the extra postage. Anyway, I can't wait to get it and compare what I see and how I feel about it compared to others. Sometimes what they say is way off of what I feel, sometimes it's dead on. I guess we shall see.

I've only watched part of the this in 3D, but it certainly looked good to me. Having watched it previously I do feel there are quite a few issues with the script and editing, though the film is generally fun.

I thought it was quite disingenuous the way Bob Iger blamed the movie's issues on the lack of executives monitoring the production. If you watch the credits there were plenty of producers and executive producers that were quite happy to take credit for the film and line up for payday, apparently without actually doing anything on the film. Can't blame the director for the no shows.

Final note: if you start the film and aren't liking it at all, turn it off and watch Madame Web and then come back to The Marvels. It'll feel like Shakespeare.

Watched it last night. This is my second time watching it after my theatrical viewing, and the 3D is still fantastic. Medium-strong to strong layering. There's even some z-axis pop that made me flinch.

I do miss the expanded IMAX scenes, but thankfully the 3D is still strong enough to impress without it. I'd rank the 3D here two points above Guardians 3, even without the expanded scenes.

The film itself is a bit messier on 2nd viewing, mostly in regards to the editing. Some scenes just move self-consciously fast. But the movie is still a fun, amiable time. The three leads have great chemistry and the quantum switching makes for dynamic fight scenes. This is the closest Marvel has come to doing a Marvel vs Capcom movie.

Agreed with Spider Neil. It’s great to see Marvel 3d back on track after a run of weak entries. It’s up there as the best stereo post infinity saga and one of the best fits for the format so far.
[Show spoiler]Nothing beats a space-time rip and singularity in 3d.
I was impressed that the visual artists seem to have some knowledge of real black hole physics. This is some of the best 'window to another universe' work I've seen.

Fingers crossed this bodes well for Deadpool & Wolverine, unless it was solely down to the short run time giving more 3d bang for Marvel’s dollar? They’re so inconsistent now.

It’s just a shame the film itself is fluff.
[Show spoiler]Chasing water as a rare resource is a pet peeve. It’s the most abundant element in the universe. Not sure why Captain Marvel didn’t reignite the sun at the start if it was so easy. The singing, cats, Nick Fury baby sitting.
Nothing made any sense, it’s all visuals over logic.

Mine comes tomorrow. No iea why you guys get it so fast. I used to get them fast when they would ship DHL to me but now they ship fedex and I get them a week and a half later. Anyway, I will watch on Saturday with pizza and will let you know what I think next Thursday. I'm sure you're looking forward to that! Also if anyone has a foreign only subs file and wants to link or attach, consequential or not, I would be happy to load it and it would save me the search for it on those shady sites lol.

I have it. It's 2 lines of dialogue.
I don't know how to share a file.

I put the forced subtitles on opensubtitles as plaintext SRT:

https://www.opensubtitles.org/en/sub...the-marvels-en

It contains only these two lines:

[Show spoiler]
Code:
1
00:48:17,228 --> 00:48:20,648
Hell. This man has taken us to Hell.

2
00:49:45,232 --> 00:49:46,775
I will kill her.

Fun fact from the commentary track - the second line was not in the script and was a riff by Zenobia Shroff!

Last edited by xenago; 07-18-2024 at 12:33 AM. Reason: opensubtitles link since subscene is gone

The mentioned series WandaVision and Miss Marvel are good for introducing the characters, especially the second one. Plotwise they don't add much, that is right.

Captain Marvel OTH is out of question.

It's been a while, but I think Secret Invasion is not necessary at all. But it left me unimpressed at all, so maybe I'm missing something.

For those waiting the Steelbook, Amazon dropped the shipping price from ¥8900 to ¥3419, or a difference of 37 bucks, give or take.

I was able to cancel my order a few days ago, so now wondering if I should wait for the steelbook to drop too, as it happened with Ant Man.

Thanks for the feedback! That's true re: introducing the characters. They did have some dialogue in the movie to give you the main points briefly and that's pretty much all you needed as far as Rambeau and Miss Marvel were concerned, which does also tell you something about the depth of the characters. Rambeau or Fury says something like "I touched a thing" and Miss Marvel says something like "I got a thing in the mail" and that's their origin stories lol. It was nice to see one of the best things from Miss Marvel - the animated comic-style elements from the early episodes (they didn't really keep it going throughout the series unfortunately) - had a brief appearance in the movie as well. But I do think that the characterization of the characters was pretty weak in the film. Everything felt very rushed and glossed over. Even if the characters are pre-existing, you still need to give the audience reasons to care about them within the movie.

Part of the problem with what I felt was a weak script was that half of the time I didn't know if something in the movie was something I had just forgotten from a previous show/movie that I should have remembered and known about already to better understand it, or if it was something new and it should have been handled better by the script.

Anyway, it is arguably the end of an era so I felt I should have it in the complete 3D collection. But to keep paying these Japan Marvel 3D prices, anything that comes next is going to have to be a whole lot better.
