It's nice they give you a film cell replica so you can see how different the film is supposed to look from what you're actually watching.

Film cells aren't exactly the correct way to judge colors and contrast either. They are color timed for a certain type of projector lamp's color temperature, so they project on the screen with a certain look.

haven't seen the original JP for so many years but used to be one of my favourites when i was younger, been intending to import this edition (for the BD rather than the 4K as not 4K capable) just so i have something on the shelf (buying this one for the classic cover which is my pref and don't care to have any of the others on disc) but will be getting to see a 35mm print in the cinema next week which i'm looking forward to. By the time i get round to watching the BD i'll probably have forgotten how it looked on the film presentation but has been interesting to follow this thread discussing it all. Can't wait to see it in the cinema I'm hoping i'll enjoy it as much as I did back then (i saw Aliens in the cinema for the first time in 10-15 years in the cinema a week or two ago and was disappointed how dull i found most of it except the final act).

The existing master wouldn’t have looked half as bad if they hadn’t had DNR’d it.

Granted, this steelbook would've been mid even if Universal hadn't used the original poster art for the previous editions.

Although you can hold them up to a light overcast mid-day sky and pretty much get the proper sense of theatrical projected colors (or buy a special D56 bulb and some mylar and view over that and get a pretty close to theatrical projection sense of colors and perhaps vague idea of contrast if you use the right amount of shielding).

That said, who knows what they mean by 35mm film cell REPLICA. Heck, maybe they even just took a frame from the newest digital master and had it printed out to film or something else.

It'll definitely look pretty different regarding the colors compared to any of the blu-rays/UHDs. They look a good deal different than the 35mm prints (although I hear that the prints for this sometimes varied among themselves regarding colors a bit more than typical, although most were apparently a bit on the yellow tinted side of things). When people ask which of the versions look most like the original, the blu, 3D blu or UHD regarding the colors, kind of have to say none and it is not even uniform as some scenes in one version might be a bit closer to 35mm colors than a different home versions but then be even more different in another scene.

Looks like they wanted Sam Gilbey artwork but didn't want to pay Sam Gilbey.
