If this ever gets a proper SE, I imagine the new featurettes will concentrate mostly on the F/X side of the production, with maybe one or two cast members chiming in. Now that Hooper's dead, we'll never get a definitive chronicle on who "really" directed the film.

Poltergeist deserves an all-inclusive behind the scenes documentary. One of my favorite movies of all time!

Agreed, they need to get over whatever animosity that has plagued the film's history, and just make an interesting documentary candid and all.

I’ve heard certain things were Spielberg’s idea, like the built over the Indian burial site & scenes with the real estate people to ease off tension. I do believe Spielberg directed certain scenes himself to Hooper’s disagreement, but it’s definitely more his film than Spielberg & a movie that still holds up today, now the remake was blah!

Yes, I'm being lazy, and not going back through this whole thread to see if someone already mentioned it but...

An episode of Mick Garris' Post-Mortem podcast from a year or so ago, he and his guests (I believe it was the Tobe Hooper tribute episode with Caroline Williams and Bill Mosley, but it might have been one with other directors) discuss that POLTERGEIST was 100% Tobe in the director's chair.....BUT, Spielberg was very much a dictator with things he thought could/should be done his way, and so there were several decisions/choices that were still Directed by Tobe Hooper, but essentially "on behalf/on the order of" Spielberg. Outside of that, apparently, any rumors of Tobe only being on set/in the director's chair for half/part of the movie are false.

I seriously doubt it, name 1 Steven Spielberg’s produced film Blu-ray ever licensed out ? They would have to go to the man himself to get approval for it.

They aren't just unfounded fan rumors though, people involved in the production have definitively stated it:

How many different times has the movie been double dipped already? How would this be any different?

The face ripping scene is pure Tobe Hooper. Too ghoulish for Spielberg (not even the stuff in Raiders and Temple of Doom got this monstrous).

Do you mean the way in which the scene is staged/photographed? Because Spielberg wrote the film, with two other people also credited, and they're his hands actually tearing the face to pieces in that scene:

No, Spielberg would never do anything like that...

Yes, those scenes were violent (as were the deaths in Jaws), but the Raiders kills were very comic bookish.

The face scene in Poltergeist is way more horrifying.

Temple of Doom and Gremlins were two major factors that got the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Spielberg can be just as terrifying and gruesome. He WROTE and PRODUCED Poltergeist, meaning he wrote the face-ripping scene.

The face peeling scene is from Spielberg. When he was a kid he would take tissue paper and put it on his face and then pretend he was peeling his skin off to horrify his sister. He wrote that scene in Poltergeist. And as has been said he is the one actually doing the peeling in the shot.

Spielberg was/is a huge fan of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and I'm sure both he and Tobe Hooper were both on the same page with the face peeling.

I was not talking about the film being re issued again, If this is re issued is most likely by Warner Bros themselves, because it would not be cost effective to do a remaster, pay for new features and then license it, to have to pay residuals to Mr Spielberg.

Well, Ill tell you this, if it sounds good to tell people I was the cinematographer for Spielberg once, but he never, ever used me again, I would say it too.

That story by bloody-disgusting is BS,

A)Leonetti would not be hired by Spielberg for a film he was directing, Spielberg only works with a handful of Cinematographers.

B)The Director's strike story is also BS, it would of affected Tobe too.

C)Unlike Leonetti, Hooper went to work (direct) other projects for Spielberg. (Amazing Stories). Leonetti cant say he worked with Spielberg again, but went to work on such serous movies as the Mortal Kombat films.

D)Zelda said I directed Poltergeist II, but you can't collaborate it cuz she's dead, so it must be the truth cause the second cousin of a guy who worked at the catering company who worked on the production said it was true.He is got a picture of me pointing (I was just saying, hey look at that, that looks cool!), but it does look like I was directing!

E)bloody-disgusting aint the new york times, and the story can not be corroborated since 95% is second hand information, not facts.
