Manipulative of the audience? Almost every movie can be considered a culprit of that in some way.
I totally agree..its a fantasized version of what one person can achieve.

A fortune-cookie has a "message" too; that doesn't mean it makes for a decent feature-length film. I understood it just fine; I also thought it was awful... the two are not incompatible. I wasn't that thrilled with 'The Machinist', either, but I thought it was a lot better than 'Memento'.

That was a long time ago, I was referring to more recently. He did have a couple of decent parts about 15 years ago, but again, it was mostly re-use of the same "crazy guy" character. (and really, "fantastic"? Not as horrible as some other parts, but... "fantastic"?)

Faithfully adapted, and faithfully lame.

A perfect adaptation doesn't necessarily equal a great film.

How is that a good message? Gump blundered stupidly through life and somehow everything went his way, while other people dropped dead of AIDS and lost limbs. It's the cheapest kind of feel-good movie. It loses any connection to reality when somehow he breaks free of his braces , he's essentially a retard superhero, so what are you really feeling good about? Its a phony artificial Hollywood concoction.

The book is so different from the movie. I actually liked the movie quite a bit, but it does resort to a lot of Hollywood cliche. I liked the book better, though: Forrest is a somewhat different character, and he's used to illustrate the difference between practical "common sense" and measurable intelligence.

Wow. I kinda took it as, if you are honest, loyal and work hard, good things may come your way. I thought the character was "slow" (low IQ) not mentally retarded.

Sean Penn in I Am Sam was retarded. Tom Hanks in Forest Gump was "slow". Know the difference.

Not that the "conversation" isn't stimulating, but to get back on topic...

Vanilla Sky

Wanted to stick hot needles in my eyes just to ease the pain. I don't know why anyone enjoyed that film... Cruise needs to stick to mildly entertaining action movies with little to no plot or character development.

I just started to fastforward around 15 minutes into the movie.Total snoozefest.Heard so many good things about it,but failed completely to live up to that

Maybe I'll check it out if it comes out on BD on the cheap.Maybe I have been wrong...

What I took away from 'Forrest Gump' (first saw it when I was 17 or 18), was that there is more than one "measure of a man". Not everybody can be smart, or beautiful, or strong, or whatever, but everybody has the option of choosing honesty, integrity, courage, and a generous heart; that, in the end, that counts for more than the obvious stuff does, and good things do come out of it. It wasn't about the "lucky" things that happened to him, it was about the difference he made in the lives of the people around him.

The choice between self-pity and strength of character is one of timeless resonance. It's the essence of 'Lord of the Rings', for example, (illustrated through numerous pairings of literary-foil characters). The lives of those around Forrest are always a mess, because they give in to despair too easily; but not Forrest. Forrest is their anchor, and at some point, they all realize that.

... plus, he was Hell at Ping-Pong!

Ok, but it's really kind of a hollow, meaningless pep-talk IMO. If you tell someone with screwy legs and a twisted back then they just need to RUN, they'll probably be insulted. I get what what the movie is trying to say, really, but for my tastes it misses that mark and makes ignorance, conformity, and mediocrity seem like virtues. I mean, why does he not despair? Is it strength of character or is ignorance just bliss? Gump's triumphs are either implausible or completely due to circumstance, and others who DO try fail spectacularly, and that's why I found this movie to not be inspirational but manipulative. It makes the audience think it's saying something about life or the human spirit, but I thought the titular character had nothing to do with the human condition at all, he is a film-making device designed to elicit an emotional response.

Or maybe I'm just thinking too hard about it... regardless, that was Pulp Fiction's Oscars it took
