Yes, I watched the Criterion BD, which looks splendid. Barnes & Noble will have one of their bi-annual 50% off Criterion sales in November if you want to wait. The movie is an absolute classic of the genre (and a big influence on the Nicole Kidman film The Others).

This was a decent but unmemorable flick from Kevin S. Tenney who did a much better job with Night Of The Demons...

the highlights are SNL's Laraine Newman playing an ex-hippy with a valley girl accent and the truly beautiful and sexy Ami Dolenz in the lead role....

Im right there with you, TCM part 2 is an abomination. Arrow UK did a deluxe edition of TCM 2, talk about polishing a turd and selling it at an inflated price. The scene where Dennis kicks the plywood wall and the blood and guts come spilling out; they looped the same footage three or four times and it just looked so amateur. The chainsaw sword fight, really? Dennis couldn't have just gone in there with some guns like any other normal person? TCM 2 is such a joke! All of the remakes are crap too IMO. Especially that one with Renee Zelwegger and Matthew McConhaughey.

Sorta...I guess. I always admired it, even if it is ridiculous and over-the-top. But then, the movie as a whole is that way, and thus the movie should have teased you to begin with. That's the point of it.

TCM 2 is awesome. Dennis Hopper running around with two chainsaws while yelling shit like "I'm the Lord of the Harvest!" is the greatest thing.

The Legacy * (1979):

Defiantly weird, awfully funny horror movie (was there a stranger time to release a horror film than the late-70's?) with a couple of L.A. architects (Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott with his trademark bristle-brush 'stache) who find themselves enticed to a gloomy English manor house, where a group of Satanists (or something) are awaiting the demise of their mysterious beneficiary, who will bequeath his supernatural powers onto one of them after killing off the rest in a variety of gruesome/amusing ways. Directed by Richard Marquand (Return Of The Jedi) and co-written by Hammer veteran Jimmy Sangster, The Legacy is just plain bizarre, and not scary in the slightest, but it's so defiantly odd it's hard not to keep watching. Where else can you watch The Who's Roger Daltrey receiving a botched tracheotomy after choking on a chicken bone, Sam Elliott having a standoff with a rooftop sniper armed with a crossbow, or a horseback getaway scene scored with disco music?

Well I'm sold!

House(1985) Its been years since I've seen HOUSE and I always remembered the Vietnam zombie dude, Big Ben. Its a nice mix of 80's horror and comedy. The creature effects were good.

Santo Y Blue Demon Contra El Dr. Frankestein(1974) Mexico's greatest legends El Santo & Blue Demon go up against the diabolical Dr. Frankestein who is kidnapping innocent women to use in his brain transplants expirements. These movies are great. They're campy and you usually get 2-3 wrestling matches in between. I have fond memories of watching El Santo movies with my parents.

*Legacy of Blood(1971) After an aged millionaire passes, he leaves his fortune to his heirs under the condition that they must all spend a week at his estate to be split among them. After some strange things, heirs begin to turn up dead. I found this flick to really dull and boring.

*The Brain From Planet Arous(1958) After an alien ship crash lands in the American desert, the being turns out to be a big floating brain with telepathic powers, whose sole purpose is to conquer the world. I loved every bit of this flick. The alien creature was cool looking! I mean, a big, floating, and grotesque looking brain with eyes? Awesome!

I'm definitely going to have to check this one out!

[Show spoiler]10/1
(1) Alien (1979) (BD)
Nothing more needs to be said. A true classic and a strong start to the challenge.

(2) A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) (Streaming)
I think this movie does a very good job of capturing the feeling and effects of being lonely. It may be "slow" by western standards but I think the combination of the black and white was what helps make the story telling work so effectively. Plus. there's some great camera shots/scenes.

10/2
(3) Castle Freak (1995) (DVD)
It's like having the Band back together! Okay, cheesy joke aside, I'm not sure how I haven't seen this movie before. I love the Full Moon movies, Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, The Band Brothers and Stuart Gordon. I had gotten this movie a couple of months ago as I stocked up for this month and when I saw somebody had already watched it, (and loved it) I bumped it up on the to-watch-list. It really is a fun little gore-fest.

I had a nice little double feature at my friends house. We watched both of these out back on his projector. It made for a fun change of pace.

(4) 30 Days Of Night (2007) (DVD)
I am a fan of this movie and of the source material and I think they did a great job conveying the isolation, bleak circumstances and the nature of the vampires. I just wish the sequel had come to close to the original but then the situation did have a lot to do with how much I enjoyed the original.

(5) An American Werewolf in London (1981) (DVD)
A classic! just the right blend of horror and comedy.

10/3
(6) Burnt Offering (1976) (DVD) .5
Burnt Offering is a mildly creepy but predictable haunted house movie. The acting and atmospheric score are very good but there's no surprises here. Which, might be a bit unfair to ask when watching a 39 year old movie for the first time. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the steady progression of the haunting. And for just a second there I really thought they were going to
[Show spoiler]get out of there alive
...just kidding.

(7) The Invisible Ray (1936) (DVD)
I love old sci-fi movies that are filled with the romance of discovering the cosmos. It's an added bonus when those discoveries lead to horrific results. Despite having a superb cast I think this one does drag on just a little in the middle. Overall though, a fun look back at the way science, and its missuses, were written into movies.

10/4
(8) [rec]² (2009) (DVD)
I thought, having loved the first [rec] that I had properly checked my expectations at the door...that didn't seem to help. The first has the advantage of putting the audience into the everyday, perhaps even mundane activities of normal life before going bat-shit crazy. I know the sequel would not have this opportunity and I was prepared for that. Sadly, this movie also has badly written characters and even misplaced character types.
[Show spoiler]I hated how the swat guy was losing his shit first thing and Jefe was inept throughout. If they were going to included the kids, it seems, these would have been the perfect characters to have lose their shit (and they did ad nauseam).
Overall, I'm still hopeful for the remainder of the series.

(9) Fright Night (1985) (BD)
A family favorite! I'm sure that if I were to nit-pick I would have to lower the score but this movie is just such a long time favorite. It's so very fun and campy.

October 4th:

13. Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) - 1/2
Very slow to get going. It at first feels like a retread of the same stuff for a little while. The opening is really cheesy, with footage played backwards from the first movie and a Batman TV show-like voice over recounting all the events of the first movie and where we are now. The kills are less memorable, and there isn't really a clear motive other than "**** you, that's my eternal life water." The last half hour gets much better with the Saw-like elaborate traps that made the first movie so interesting. The ending is very abrupt, especially since you watch the entire movie wondering about this river, only to never actually see it. Vincent Price singing somewhere over the rainbow was classic though.

14. Eaten Alive (1977) -
It's a big letdown for fans expecting something like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While it has a similar kind of premise (unsuspecting victims come across a backwoods, southern maniac) the movie has none of the style that made The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a classic. I think the biggest problem is that probably 90% of the film takes place on an obvious set. While the red mood lighting is nice, the problem is it feels too clean compared to Chainsaw which was such a gritty film. It feels like Tobe Hooper went with whatever would be a much easier filming experience and it dulls the movie. As far as I could tell, there were no real alligators shown in the movie (which would have helped) and the sets make it feel more like a soap opera than a horror movie. There's nothing wrong with shooting a film like that, but something like this that could have used alligator stock footage and them going out in the woods at night to film would have boosted this movie tremendously. Not to mention there are so many characters that share the screen time, making it nearly impossible to get attached to any one single character. It's not a complete mess, but it's a big disappointment as a followup.

15. Cello (2005) -
I loved the Asian horror/ghost movies when they first exploded in the early 2000s, but after a while they got really, really old. This is one of those less inspired affairs. It's very predictable (it has the same basic twist as EVERY one of these movies) and it's definitely not scary. The ghost doesn't look scary (just a cheaper version of the Ring-like ghost we've seen a million times) and the acting is so bad it borders on camp when this movie is supposed to be taken serious. The special effects are overblown and look terrible too. There are some nice shots with people covered in blood, but that's about the only nice thing I can say about this otherwise forgettable mess.

16. The Oracle (1985) - 1/2
The only other Roberta Findlay movies I had seen before this were Blood Sisters and Tenement, which were both terrible. So my expectations for this going in were VERY low. However, this movie has shown me that she may be the most crazy female horror director ever. This is one of those "wtf?" confusing, bad horror movies filled with cheap special effects, terrible acting, and cheese. Glorious, glorious cheese. There's the killer that is obviously a woman that they try audiences make to think is a man for most of the movie before saying "screw it" and revealing she is a woman halfway. There are moments where the movie completely rips off Dressed to Kill and it's hilarious. The last half hour of this is just amazing. The killer is chasing the main character with an axe, and the killer becomes so inept that her asthma acts up and she can't hit her with the axe from two feet. There is an insane asylum with extras acting like idiots, a nice gory moment at the end of the movie that was very unexpected and out-of-tone with most of the rest of the movie, and a freaking cheap-looking zombie ghost. The plot makes no sense, there are some nice deaths, the acting is bad, and the directing, pacing, and editing is all nonsensical. This is bad movie trash at its finest. Afterwards I had to watch the interview with Roberta Findlay on the DVD, and I must say, she is one crazy woman. I swear, there is something missing up there!

* - 1st Time Viewing

10/1 - *Trick 'r Treat (2007)
[Show spoiler]

I really liked the cast and acting throughout this movie, and the cinematography and music were top-notch as well. I liked that it was basically an anthology, but that each of the stories were interconnected. I had a lot of fun with it. It's got plenty of scary scenes, some gross-out stuff, and a lot of funny parts too.

10/1 - *I, Madman (1989)
[Show spoiler]

Cool villain, nice lead actress, some interesting ideas. The occasional goofy stop-motion stuff is kind of weird. A little slow at times, a little cliche. Overall, it was a decently fun movie.

10/1 - *Lost After Dark (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Stereotypical characters, cliche scenario, stiff acting, unconvincing effects and editing, lack of humor... It was gimmicky and failed as an homage, with so much missing the mark. There were only a couple of brief scenes that were pretty fun.

10/1 - *The Editor (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great job creating the vibe of a traditional giallo, very good cinematography and music. The acting really got on my nerves though, and the whole thing started to feel too much like a gimmick at times. The plot was really confusing for me, but some of the scenes in this movie were truly great, including some that had me literally rolling on the floor laughing. I kind of thought it didn't go all in enough on the parody aspect.

10/1 - *It Follows (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great atmosphere, great concept, great execution, great music, great acting! I liked the characters and they actually displayed normal levels of human intelligence and intuition in most of the movie.

10/1 - Fright Night (1985)
[Show spoiler]

I really like the feel of this movie, it's kind of light-hearted, but suspenseful as well. Some of the characters are very odd in a charming sort of way. There is a lot of funny stuff in this, and the gore & special effects in the final act are really cool. Just great characters, atmosphere, writing, and everything all around. A lot of fun.

10/1 - *Castle Freak (1995)
[Show spoiler]

Great plot, great atmosphere & setting, excellent acting, convincing effects work, moody lighting, interesting characters. Totally engrossing, enhanced by the gruesomeness of it all. Just a really wonderful, freaky as hell movie.

10/1 - Swamp Thing (1982)
[Show spoiler]

Not a great movie, but it's a pretty fun kid-friendly 1950's drive-in style B-movie. Kind of slow to get going, but the finale is an absolute blast, complete with ridiculous rubber suit special effects and hammy performances.

10/2 - *The Babadook (2014) -
[Show spoiler]

The story was good, I liked how they explored how this kind of psychological torture might effect a family in the real world. The lead actress was absolutely amazing in this. It was a very well-done movie, but it did feel REALLY long to me for some reason, and while I really appreciate the movie a lot, it doesn't strike me as something I'll want to rewatch anytime soon.

10/2 - *The Hole (2009)
[Show spoiler]

This is the kind of movie I probably would have loved if I'd seen it as a kid. It felt pretty juvenile to me. I appreciated a lot of the homage to other horror movies, but it just wasn't that suspenseful to me, and I didn't identify with the relationship between the brothers, or the concept behind their fears. Although I admit I was never bored while watching, and the final scenario was pretty cool with a really awesome set.

10/2 - *Body Bags (1993)
[Show spoiler]

I'm not exaggerating when I say that, for me, this movie is PERFECT. I love the morgue scenes between the stories, I love all 3 stories, and really I just love everything about it. The acting is top notch across the board, as is the special effects & makeup work. Direction is spot-on, great music, great photography, great stories. The Gas Station is very suspenseful and scary, and the other two are quirky and crazy and just awesome. I feel like this is criminally underrated.

10/2 - *Eyes Without a Face (1960)
[Show spoiler]

Immediately I felt like I was watching an early version of Almodovar's The Skin I Live In (one of my favorite films). This is an excellent movie, with a great story, some really creepy and even gruesome scenes, some good suspense, and a general macabre feeling. The acting and direction were top-notch all around, but I was a little disappointed with the musical score, it didn't even try to be suspenseful from what I could tell. This movie might have been even more effective with a more terrifying score, but as is the movie works really well, even if it does only marginally qualify as horror.

10/3 - Halloween (1978)
[Show spoiler]

One of the great intros and most exciting finales in horror history. Personally, I find a lot of the stuff in between to be uneventful, but there is a building sense of impending doom as it goes. Great photography, even better music. Pretty good acting, too. The movie holds up great, but I always thought it could have been edited down a bit to make it a bit more lean and better paced.

10/3 - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
[Show spoiler]

Really great music and photography, good acting, and a truly terrifying concept. I don't always like when Freddy comes off as oddly humorous, and I honestly don't think it was intentional in this first one. I don't really care for the ending, either. But the movie has this crazy quality to it that's just downright fun to watch!

10/3 - *The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
[Show spoiler]

This was very underwhelming to me. It was really kitschy and kind of hokey, but I didn't laugh a single time. It wasn't frightening, but there were some cool special effects that were worth seeing I guess. It didn't really do anything for me.

10/3 - *The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
[Show spoiler]

Atmospheric lighting, engaging and suspenseful musical score, top-notch acting, wonderful sets & costumes, engrossing plot. Very good movie all around.

10/3 - *Vampire's Kiss (1988)
[Show spoiler]

Uhhh... what? This is an incredibly weird movie. The director clearly had no control over his star, and this is one of the most uneven, over-the-top performances I've ever seen. Cage can't figure out what accent he wants his character to have. The story in this is actually kind of interesting when it's all said and done, it might have been much better in the hands of a more capable director. It had me laughing maniacally a lot of the time. It kind of works as a tale of madness more than it does as a comedy, weirdly enough. Very entertaining, anyway.

10/3 - Zombie (1979)
[Show spoiler]

This movie has really amazing gore effects, violence, and zombie makeup. Unfortunately the pacing is very slow, the plot is basic, the characters are kind of lifeless and uninteresting, and it takes entirely too long to get going (after a brief opening scene that was interesting and fun). I had a hard time keeping focused, actually. That said, there are some truly captivating scenes that make it worth a view. Some parts are extremely intense and very well made, but most of it is boring.

10/4 - *Leprechaun 3 (1995)
[Show spoiler]

So much of this movie was bad. The Leprechaun's rhymes are about as cheezy as it gets, and the plot was really slow and illogical. That said, there were a couple of scenes that made me laugh out loud and have a great time. In general, it's pretty much a "so bad it's good" classic.

10/4 - The Frighteners (1996)
[Show spoiler]

I really like Michael J Fox in this, and while some of it is too silly and cartoonish for me, most of it is really entertaining, with a lot of great humor and even some pretty chilling parts. There's a lot of very cool special effects and camera work in this, too. The story works great for me, and the acting is mostly great as well.

10/4 - *Harper's Island Season 1 (2009)

It takes a few episodes to really get into it, because it starts off a bit too much like a prime time soap kind of show, but I think that was the point. It's humorous and kind of light at first, and eventually it shifts gears into this intense slasher movie with a TON of great kills, a lot of likable characters, and an actually interesting plot/mystery. Absolutely love this! Great way to spend a day.

10/1 - Fright Night (1985)
10/2 - From Dusk till Dawn
First time viewing. Really enjoyed this one. Didn't realize how funny it would be. The vampires looked great. Plenty of blood and gore. And of course, Selma Hayek
10/3 - Hostel
I remember liking this one more back when it was released. Found it a tad boring now. Great gory scenes of course. Overall ok.
10/4 - Silent Hill 1/2
This is a weird one. On one hand, I love the beginning and end but on the other, the middle is kinda meh. The biggest highlight for me is the music. Taken straight from the game so that's a huge plus since I love the music. I love the look as well. They definitely got the look of the game too. It's one of those movies that you know it's flawed but can't help repeat viewings.

First viewings in bold.

Oct 1st - The Thing (1982)
Oct 1st - Scream Queens SE01E03
Oct 1st - The Ring (2002)
Oct 2nd - Halloween (2007)
Oct 2nd - Cooties (2015)
Oct 3rd - The Cabin In The Woods (2012)
Oct 4th - The Ring Two (2005)
Oct 4th - Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Oct 5th - Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Oct 5th - The Guest (2014)

What an excellent little film. Love the story and the acting. Quality soundtrack too. Just wish it leaned a little more towards Horror instead of Action as it would have fit better next to the Halloween setting. All in all, pleasantly surprised. Some will argue that it doesn't fit in with 31 Days of Halloween but it does, just by a hair though. A few pages back someone said "The Guest is to Halloween what Die Hard is to Christmas." YES! That's an excellent way to view it.

Soooo boring. The first of the four stories was mildly entertaining and had some interesting ideas, but the ending was out of left field and incredibly stupid. They just got more and more boring from there. It was nice seeing Vincent Price in a minor role.

10/5 - *Jennifer's Body (2009)

This was just straight up horrible. I hated everything about it. I couldn't stand the characters, the setup was lame, the kills were lame, and the dialogue was about as stupid as it gets. I found myself shifting between bored and irritated throughout. Can I give it 0 skulls? I'll settle for a half.

I hadn't seen this since it came out, and I remembered enjoying it so I revisited it tonight, and well... I kinda had fun with it. Sure it has its problems, not least of which is Paul W.S. Anderson and that AWFUL lead actress, actually the cast in general, but lets be honest it was always gonna be about those badass Aliens and Predators. So much fun seeing them battle and that was enough for me. It had the potential to be so much better and I for one would like to see another attempt at an Alien vs. Predator film with a better team behind it and a more suspenseful Horror driven angle.
Actually Sanaa Lathan is a great actress! That movie just sucked balls! Even she couldnt save it. Ho are you gonna make a AvP film and make it PG-13. Did the creatures get less violent lol. Also have Sanaa and the Predator running side by side as sidekick heroes lol. The movie just sucked. Had nuthin to do with Sanaa or the cast. Got Em!!

Naa more horror films have the happier ending than the dreaded ending. I dont mind either as long as the film is good. To me endings like The Mist, Jeepers Creepers or even Saw is how it should be done. Got Em!!

[Show spoiler]Sinister (2012) - I find this to be one of the best horror movies of the decade. It’s a film that successfully uses suspense and tension over gore, which seems to be a lost art. The performances are well done, there are some cool twists, Mr. Boogie is frightening, and the use of super 8 film is fantastic. What truly makes this film so atmospherically haunting is the tremendous score/sound design, which gives me goose bumps every time I watch it.

Sinister 2* (2015) - While this was not as good as the first installment, it also doesn’t deserve the abundance of hate it’s received. The film is very flawed, most notably in making the comedic side character from the last film the lead, as well as making the ghost children less scary and more relatable. However, the stuff that did well really worked for me, like the twist between the two brothers and the super 8 movies. I had hoped that this one was going to make Buguul more of a threat, but all in all, I found it to be an enjoyable flick.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009) - This is such a zany and over the top movie, but I always have a good time watching it. Of course, it’s much more enjoyable when you can pick up on the abundance of horror references. It does drag a bit during the middle, but the end makes up for it. Granted, I think this movie could’ve been a lot funnier and stronger, but for what it is, I like it.

Mountain of the Cannibal God* (1979) - I pretty much got what I expected with this one: tits and gore, and that was enough for me. The acting may be subpar, but it delivered on the exploitative goods and was quite disturbing, although not as horrific as Cannibal Holocaust.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre II (1986) - While this sequel is a far cry from its groundbreaking predecessor, it manages to deliver enough campy entertainment to make it an enjoyable viewing. The first half of the film suffers from pacing issues, but the over-the-top mania keeps interest held until the conclusion. Tom Savini’s effects are also very effective.

The Bat* (1959) - This Vincent Price flick was fun, although it’s certainly not one of his best. It certainly has that 50’s horror charm, which over powered the slow pace and campy aesthetics. I also enjoyed how it played with the audience about who the killer is, rather then making it the obvious choices.

American Psycho (2000) - Although it feels a bit dated, and a little slow at times, Christian Bale’s performance is mesmerizing. It’s definitely worth a watch just to see the scenes when he goes off the deep end. Not a great movie, but one that is always fun to see.

A Clockwork Orange (1971) - There’s really nothing I can say about this film that hasn’t been said before. Incredible visuals, disturbing characters, and a zany plot. As most of you know, it’s a Kubrick classic!

Horror of Dracula (1958) - Christopher Lee is top notch as the Count, and Peter Cushing makes for an excellent Van Helsing. I do love the vibe of the old Hammer horror films, although I don’t think it matches the atmosphere of the Lugosi version. My only complaint is that it moves very slow, but when it picks up, it’s great stuff.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003) - This is a movie that I enjoy more and more with every viewing. Although I think the sequel outshines it in terms of quality, there is such uniqueness about this film that makes it a treat to watch. It’s so zany and twisted that it’s almost hypnotic. Performances are great, set design is incredible, and the mood that’s set with the weird transitions and intercuts are just plain awesome! I also wish Zombie would do the music for more of his films, because I think the score is very underrated. As far as criticism, the only one I have is that the protagonists are basically indistinguishable. However, it’s never been a huge problem for me because it’s clear the stars of the film are the members of the Firefly family.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - How can I possibly say anything new about this film? It’s iconic and a classic. I did notice that it has some pacing and performance issues, but the concept is so excellent that it’s easy to overlook. The surrealness of the film is definitely one of its best elements, not to mention one of the greatest villains ever, Freddy Krueger. Having lost Wes so recently, it definitely struck how influential he was and will continue to be in the horror genre.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) - I hadn’t seen this is numerous years, and didn’t have much of a memory of it. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it just as much, perhaps even a little more, than TCM2. Granted, this film suffers from one big problem, it’s generic. There’s nothing that is done incredibly well, besides maybe Viggo’s performance, but there is also nothing truly abysmal. I do like how menacing they made Leatherface, and Ken Foree automatically makes me enjoy the film. No, it’s not a great movie, but I would go as far as to call it decently enjoyable.

This is the End (2014) - I think this film is very well done. Not only is it absolutely hilarious, particularly with its meta concept, but there are moments that can genuinely creep you out. While it’s not as clever as Shaun of the Dead, it has become one of my favorite horror comedies. I’d even say it’s one of the best Seth Rogan movies.

Tales From the Crypt (1972) - I was so happy to revisit this film on blu-ray for the first time. Despite its age, the film holds up incredibly well. There is an awesome, old school, creepy vibe that lends itself to the moralistic campfire tales of the film. I’m too seduced by the charm of the film to really find any negatives. All the segments are enjoyable and it looks great in HD.

Child’s Play (1982) - Having watched it this time on a big screen (my universities private screening room), I was able to appreciate this on a more technical level. As crazy as the premise is, they pulled it off exceptionally well. Everyone brings their A game, and the horror still holds up well. It’s a very fun and cool movie.

28 Days Later (2002) - One of the absolute best modern zombie films! Incredibly creepy and scary, the concept and execution are both spot on. This is the type of film that would keep me awake at night because it just seems like it can totally happen. While the video quality leaves a lot to be desired, it does add to the grittiness and realism of the film.

Friday the 13th (2009) - This movie actually seems more flawed with each time I see it. I certainly don’t loathe like many others do, but it does have a blandness about it. I will applaud its kick ass opening, beautiful women, and fearsome portrayal of Jason, but the story itself and the protagonists are forgettable. Luckily, the unique kills and cool set design make it fun enough to revisit.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) - When someone asks me what the worst movie I’ve ever seen is, I always refer to this. I had only seen it one other time, so I was hoping that my memory of it was worse than it actually was. Sadly, I was wrong. The absolute only thing that is decent about the film is Matthew McConaughey. I have nothing else positive to say about the film. It’s truly just an abysmal experience.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) - This is one of those rare remakes that is almost just as good as the original. I love the casting, music, set design, story, and basically everything about it. I think it’s also the scariest Leatherface has ever been, along with R. Lee Ermy, who just steals the show. Even the protagonists are very likeable, with Jessica Biel being a standout. I may rank the original a little higher than this one, but this is the one I revisit the most.

Dawn of the Dead (2003) - Where TCM remake comes close to being as good as the original, I dare say this one surpasses it’s original film. This is probably my favorite zombie movie ever. It is truly unnerving and terrifying. There is an intense feeling of brutality and hopelessness that you feel the terror that the survivors suffer. This is how you make not only a great horror movie, but a great remake as well.

Halloween (2007) - I know this is a controversial film to Halloween fans, but I for one love it. Yes, it has its flaws, but it’s one of my favorite remakes because of it’s differences from the original. I love the brutality and disturbing quality of the film, which helps to make Michael Myers as terrifying as he was in the original. It may not be for everyone, but it always hits my sweet spot.
