I think that not only can the experience at home be duplicated, but it can in fact be surpassed even

I think it would be hard to duplicate the 70mm imax theater experience of this movie

Sure. And plenty of movies these days have home video release dates established before they even hit theatres. However, that doesn't make a movie that doesn't have a date locked down yet but is still in theaters "long overdue" to issue that date.

Well yes, if all we care is sheer size of the screen. I went to watch GoG2 in 70mm Imax 3D and I felt that both my Sony projetcor and Oled TV offer a better experience

GotG 2 never had a 70mm run, what you saw was most likely shitty 2k digital.

All I know is that I paid $15/ticket and this was one of only 80 Imax theaters of this kind in the US

LOL at the release date tho 12/29/2020

I wish they'd give us an official date already. Even though I still don't own any UHD equipment, this and Interstellar will be my first UHD purchases.

One thing, no matter how big and amazing your TV or projector system is, it definitely won't be as good as an actual theater with a giant screen.

I agree with this to a point, but not as a universal axiom. Since purchasing a 65” LG E6 OLED and an Oppo 203, I have admittedly become the kind of person I swore I would never become (the “oh, I’ll just wait for it to come out on home video to watch it” consumer), but as breath-taking as a screen at home bigger than 60” can be, for some movies, a 60’ screen is demanded. That’s the one single aspect that theatrical releases will forevermore have over watching movies at home—the titanic, overwhelming breadth of the screen.

I think we'd all prefer to have our own fully spec'd IMAX movie theatre for purely personal use. But unfortunately the "big screen" experience comes with a lot of elements that aren't about the film itself - travel, expense and audience members that talk, rustle and munch their way through it.

Shamefully that means the bulk of my cinema visits are to see blockbusters and the like, many of which have only spectacle to recommend them. I actually think DUNKIRK won't suffer that much from the downgrade because I don't think it made very good use of the real-estate to begin with; but I realise that's a minority opinion.

i've gotten to the point, due to cost, crowd and other personal matters, the only visits i make to a theater are if it's really something i have to see at the big screen, and only at matinée prices and crowd, early a.m. veiwing and a nice lunch out after can be a pretty decent day out.

It's pretty abnormal to be 2 months and a week + past the theatrical opening and the home release not announced yet.

It's barely in a few hundred theaters at this point.

I don't know why people focus so much on screen size when it's really about field of view. How far do you sit from your TV? 65" can be epic at one distance, quite normal at another. Everyone should sit at roughly proper FOV distance anyway, for eye health and image viewing reasons, so really with a larger set you're buying floor space more than anything.

Also no TV can compare to an actual large screen theater projection. I saw Dunkirk in Imax and there's nothing that can top it at home, not even a $10,000 projector. I don't usually see movies in a theater that way though, so it's all relative.

You can’t possibly sit at a comfortable distance from a TV at home and still have it spill out to the edges of your peripheral vision like a large theater screen. Sorry, I’m not buying it. I sit about five-and-a-half feet back from mine and it’s glorious but it doesn’t swallow nearly my whole field of horizontal view like a good theater screen.

Yep, no matter how wonderful our home theaters are in other areas, no screen that will fit in a private home can compete with the huge screens, especially IMAX screens, to be found in commercial theaters. Generally speaking, I prefer the quality of both the sound and the image in my home theater but for sheer spectacle there is no substitute for a huge, 50' X 75', IMAX screen.

Having owned 4 projectors and countless TV's size is not the most important. Sure a big screen at home is great but projectors can't offer the benefits panels offer at this time and probably not for some time. I was weary going from a 110" screen to a 65" panel but in my room the 65" is still large while offering a much better image.
